During Abril’s weekly lunch and soft-sex date with Jessica and Rose her general mood allowed her to drop her guard so a mistake was made. I admit that it was the first time in almost three years that the former con-woman had let something about me slip out, but we both knew that keeping secrets was why I picked her.
Abril let slip to the girls that I was something “like the boss” for a security outfit employing armed men in LA. When she realized what she had done she covered with our fallback, that I had taken titular control, on a temporary basis, of a security firm from an associate who was indisposed. “Cancer takes so many good ones,” she said, switching the subject, because everybody has a cancer story. In this case it was somebody I knew from “my youth” long before I became a lawyer. She said the job did not really change my work for the law firm. She was properly vague in terms of when this supposedly happened.
Abril texted me about her ‘oops’ right away, modern grifters know to stay in touch. (I was enjoying Irene’s body at the time.) Since she told Rose I knew that Rose would tell her dad so David Barnes would want to chat with me. I did not expect that Jessica’s hearing the comment would lead to anything, but I was very wrong about that.
A quick phone call with Abril on the way to work filled me in on what exactly what the girls had been told. Abril said she was sorry but I said I would make it better, it would not be tomorrow but there might be some cash coming her way from it. She thought I was a very fair person that way, and I considered myself pretty good at turning any mistake into a cash inflow. In this case I would pitch the security work to the law firm, Barnes would ask me for the pitch instead of the other way around. It would never work, but it would open the door to get Mark’s firm involved, and as family (soon enough) I would get a finder’s fee from the mistake. It was a case of turning “lemons into lemonade” and it is one of the great secrets of business success.
I had been looking for a way to raise the issue of a security firm with Barnes. After the last year, our insurance firm insisted on something in place by January 1, I was waiting for an opening to raise the subject. My best idea was a joint contract with my troops and Mark’s firm, but I was still a long way from working that out.
I was ready Tuesday. Despite the late hour when I arrived at the office there was a message from Barnes asking me to his office where Stern was waiting. David got right to the point, “What is this I hear about you moonlighting at a security job?”
