Saturday Afternoon September 27
The crowd settled into the gathering area. Small blankets were provided for them to sit on. The estimate was a crowd of 500, the largest of the year. 50 was considered a good turnout for a normal wedding, but this was hardly normal. The area where they sat was a slight hill so they all had a good view of the ceremony - better than those at the back of a large church would have.
As my bride and I followed the Patron up the platform stairs where we could be seen.
The Patron was standing near the front center of the platform. Ximena and I were in front of him, facing each other. Given the way were were dressed in what was actually fishnets, Ximena had asked that we not face the Patron, if we did then the crowd would look at our naked butts for the entire time. This way, face-to-face meant our unsupported bare tits were in profile to the audience and the folks on the platform, and we both had good looking tits. The Patron said it was a charming suggestion.
The ceremony started when all were settled and the Patron addressed the crowd. It was his speech, but we had contributed some ideas, about how this ceremony had started at the river’s edge. Like Avee, after spending last night on the island we had emerged from the water with naught but our bodies to enter a new stage in our life. It also signaled a new stage in the journey of the Colony. Working hard 14 hours a day just to sustain life was no longer the standard. As two women who had found the time for love, we were providing an path for others who, in their heart, knew they wanted to follow this path to happiness with another. He could not say if “2” was the only number for the future, instead we all had to open our thinking as our hearts searched what was no longer the simple, brutal universe of 1590.
The Colony had reached the point where, for some, their future might not follow the path of a man and a woman who married with thoughts mainly of procreation. The Patron gestured to me and indicated that plainly, that was not the point here. “Ximena did not plant this seed,” he said, “we all know the culprit, and I will see him make her an honest woman before the child comes.” The laughter was amazing.
Pammie tells me that I blushed brighter than some of the dresses on the Chinese girls.
The Patron also noted that our marriage did not preclude children, several options came to mind and he was receptive to suggestions from those who sought his advice. He said that for temporary marriages, he would consider women who wanted to “take a stab at a different lifestyle” while aiding those brave and dedicated souls who wished to participate in military service.
This type of lifestyle was becoming part of the world, some of our recent additions - he pointed the the Chinese - showed us the way, as others had described life in LA and Detroit. Our cousins who visited also talk to the same trends in Europe. We thanked those pioneers. Ximena and I started to clap as, at Chin Li’s urging, the few Chinese couples stood up, turning red as their dresses. The Patron and the crowd joined in, some of them told me later that they were still worried about being accepted until that moment when I, the future wife of the next Patron, clapped for them and showed I understood their love.
The Patron noted that I also had a lover I lived with in LA. He noted that she acted as the Prince’s wife, put me in the Prince’s bed - with obvious joyful results - and together we all lived under the Prince’s roof. “It seems my grandson has a big heart, and he surrounds himself with lovers who also have a big heart.”
This was a surprise to many, but it also explained something of why I was pregnant and was being wed to Ximena. Later, during the reception when I talked to people, I was asked often about sleeping arrangements. I said we were all very flexible, but my Prince had the largest bed. We did not limit love to just the three of us.
As the Patron continued he stressed that as a couple, we had not worked out all the details of our married life. It was a temporary marriage, at the end Ximena would take up her service to her people by joining the military in Chile. “She can speak the language of the trolls who come to Antarctica from the distant North! The descendant of Vikings!” But he said he was confident that we could start to answer some questions better than an old man who had buried his beloved wife. He hoped others would expand the colony’s Book of Love.
With that he turned to the actual marriage ceremony. We both renewed our vows to our Colony and our Patron. We declared our love for the Patron and his line, including children yet to come. (Ximena and the Patron both touched my belly at that.) As a temporary marriage we agreed to the end date (November 20 to November 30, about two months) when we would each be declared widows to pursue our separate paths. That corresponded roughly to the start of my third trimester, when the Prince and the Patron both wanted me in LA, under the care of my regular doctor. At that I rubbed my tummy, which drew a loud cheer. We also agreed to love and support each other for the term of the marriage and far beyond. There was no mention of fidelity. There were no rings, the convention was that the wife’s ear was pierced with a thorn on her wedding night, and in the hole she wore a decoration fashioned from a fishbone during the honeymoon period. Traditionally that would come tomorrow morning, after the sunrise and the consummation, when the Patron enjoyed breakfast with the new couple. But we would be an exception to the general rule.
