Eli did a small spit take. Fortunately, his mouth was empty so he didn’t actually spray anyone. Still, he looked wide-eyed at his girlfriend.
“What?” Megan teased. “I like talking about sex.”
“Yeah...,” he said.
“Did you tell Finn all about our big Prom night plans?”
Eli swallowed and reached for his beer.
Megan smiled at Finn. “We’re getting a hotel room suite and we’re gonna have a bottle of champagne and everything.”
“Sounds special,” he mused.
“Oh, it will be! My big sister’s been helping me plan it for, like, forever!” She smiled at Eli. “It’s gonna be so good.”
“No pressure or anything,” Finn mused.
Eli shot him a dirty look.
“He’ll be fine!” Megan said. “It’s not like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Well—” she smirked—”at least what he’s done so far.”
Finn tried to hide his amusement. He was shocked that Megan was so direct, but he didn’t want her to see it.
“I want my first time to be as good as Mac’s,” Megan continued, “and Eli’s the guy!”
Eli chugged some more beer while MacKenzie nuzzled Finn’s neck. The memory of that night came flooding back, which stirred his blood.
“It’s gonna be so great!” Megan smiled at Eli, before giving him a kiss on the cheek.
“So ... uh...,” Eli stammered, “what are you guys doing after Prom?”
Finn and MacKenzie exchanged a silent look before Finn answered.
“Coming back here, I suppose. We hadn’t really thought about it.”
“Oh,” Megan said. “Okay.”
“It’s cheaper than a hotel,” Finn said with a shrug.
“And my mom’s gonna be out,” MacKenzie said.
Finn blinked at that news.
“Ooh! An empty house!” Megan’s face lit up. She looked expectantly at Eli. “Maybe we could...?”
“Ah, Babe. The hotel will be a lot more romantic.”
She bit her lip.
“And isn’t that what you want?”
She sighed and then, after a pause, nodded.
“It’ll be good,” Finn reassured. “It’ll be nice and romantic and something you’ll always remember fondly.” He shared a knowing smile with MacKenzie.
Megan sighed, but then nodded.
She smiled at Eli. “You’re right. I want it to be special.”
He returned a smile, before tipping his beer bottle to his lips. He blinked and lowered it.
“Hey,” he said. “Looks like I need another. Anyone else while I’m up?”
Everyone shook their heads. The girls had barely touched their drinks, and Finn hadn’t even drunk a third of his.
“Okay.” Eli stood. “I’ll be right back.” He looked at Megan. “No funny stuff while I’m gone.”
Finn couldn’t decide if Eli was teasing or not. Instead, he waited until Eli was in the house, but MacKenzie beat him to the question.
“No funny stuff?” she asked.
“Um ... yeah...” Megan blushed.
“So what’d he mean?” Finn added.
“Well ... um...”
Finn waited patiently.
“Well...,” Megan finally said. “When Eli said we’d be getting in your hot tub, I asked if we needed suits.”
Finn chuckled.
“I mean ... we don’t when we go hottubbing on ski trips, and ... I thought, well ... I wasn’t quite sure...”
“It’s okay,” Finn said. “We usually don’t wear suits when it’s just us.”
“You don’t?” Megan sounded excited.
“Nope.”
“Oh, Gawd! I knew you two were cool!”
Finn chuckled and gave Mac a friendly squeeze.
“Eli’s great,” Megan said, “and I love him—”
The door from the house opened and she immediately clamped her mouth shut.
Eli returned, a fresh beer in one hand and the pitcher of spiked punch in his other. He held it up.
“Ladies?”
“Sure.” Megan took a long drink out of her glass and then held it out to him.
MacKenzie demurred, but Eli filled Megan’s glass to the brim before looking around for a place to set the pitcher down.
“Sorry,” Finn said. “Back in the fridge?”
Eli nodded and went inside.
“This is really good,” Megan said to MacKenzie after another sip of punch.”
“Thanks! The trick is fresh juice.”
The girls talked about the punch for a few moments until Eli returned.
Finn sank back into the water with a sigh. Somehow he was sure, the moment had been lost.
Finn stopped by the kitchen on his way back from the bathroom. He kept his towel wrapped tight to reduce the dripping on the floor. One disadvantage of the suit—it held onto more water.
He refreshed MacKenzie’s punch glass. The pitcher was mostly full, which he took as a good sign. The girls were having a lot of fun out in the tub, and it wasn’t all alcohol induced.
But the beers ... Finn counted the empty bottles. He’d had two, which meant Eli’d had...
... way too many.
He sighed and checked the clock. It was also way, way late.
He returned to the tub to find MacKenzie and Megan both sitting on the side chatting. Eli was still in the water opposite them, nursing his most recent beer.
“Hey,” Finn said, “not to be a downer, but when do you all have to be home?”
“One,” Eli grumbled.
“Um. It’s 12:30.”
“Shit!” Eli staggered to his feet. He almost keeled over, but caught himself on the edge of the tub with his free hand. Fill quickly lunged forward and grabbed Eli’s beer before it spilled.
“You okay to drive?” Finn said. “You wanna spend the night?”
Eli drunkenly shook his head.
“I can stay!” Megan called. “Just gotta text my mom.”
“Can’t stay,” Eli said.
“We’ll get you home.” Finn offered a hand and helped Eli out of the tub.
“My car...”
“I’ll drive it. Mac’s mom can pick me up.” Finn looked to Mac for confirmation, and she nodded.
“Gotta ... gotta get Meg home.”
“Mac’s mom can take her. If we don’t get moving, you’re gonna miss curfew. And you do not want to get grounded.”
“No!”
“Yeah.” Eli’s parents had grounded him for two weeks last time, and with Prom in exactly two weeks...?
“No.” Eli shook his head again. “No.”
“Come on.” Finn took his arm gently guiding him forward. “Get dressed. I’ll drive. If we hurry, you can make it. Don’t want to get grounded for Prom.”
“God, no!” Eli started moving faster.
Finn shot another look at MacKenzie, who nodded and began getting out of the tub herself.
As Finn approached Ms. O’Connell’s car, his eyebrows went up. She’d arrived at Eli’s faster than he’d expected, and his first thought was they were picking him up before dropping Megan off. Except Ms. O’Connell was alone in the car.
“Where’s Mac?” he asked as he climbed in the passenger’s seat.
“At the house. Megan’s spending the night.”
“Ah.”
“Are you?”
