Finn slowly thumbed through the rack of rental tuxes. Too many of them were garish colors, leaving only a few his size in classic black. If you were going to dress up, why would you want to look like a peacock or a pastel Wiggles actor? A tux should be elegant. Smooth, with straight lines and a sense of style. None of these matched what he wanted for their senior prom.

He sighed. He’d have to settle for ... something. Hopefully it’d be close.

“Finn!”

He turned to see Eli posing a few feet away. He had on a powder blue tux jacket and pants, with a dark blue stripe down the side.

“Looking hot!” He hooked his thumbs under the wide jacket labels and grinned.

Finn rolled his eyes. “If you say so.” With Eli’s lanky frame and mop of black hair, he looked more like a cartoon than a man.

Eli snorted. “I’m getting it.”

“You do that.” Finn turned back to the rack. Did he want the smoothness of silk or something less likely to stain?

In Finn’s pocket, his phone vibrated. Mac’s ringtone. He pulled it out and tapped the picture of the two of them together at Homecoming. It opened to a text of a picture of a burgundy silk fabric. It had to be her dress. The photo was too close for him to make out more than the color, though.

“Match to this,” the words underneath read.

Finn grinned. At least his girlfriend had style, even if their friends didn’t. She’d also picked one of his favorite colors. That wasn’t a surprise.

Finn snorted softly. MacKenzie and he had been a couple since we were thirteen. Ever since he’d ridden his bike past her house and seen the brunette girl trying to inflate her own bike tire. Then they’d been each other’s firsts at sixteen. That night had been magic. The first feel of her flesh surrounding his own. Her cries when he came inside her, triggering her own release.

He knew her moods and her whims and the little mole on her thigh. She knew his habit of shaking his head after he sneezed. She knew how he’d curl his toes when she gently bit his nipple.

She knew everything about him.

And she was the only one.

The closer they got to graduation, the more that bothered him.

He loved her, but ... one woman? For the rest of his life?

He sighed.

He did love her.

The screensaver had kicked in, showing Mac with a smile as wide as the ocean. He’d taken it on her eighteenth birthday. The necklace, his gift, was prominently displayed.

He tapped his phone and sent her a heart emoji. Then he tried to decide which jacket would best match her dress.

Finn grimaced as Eli revved the engine of his Mustang. His Dad’s Mustang, to be more precise. They were at a red light and not a drag race, but that didn’t prevent Eli from pretending it was the Grand Prix. At least he didn’t drive recklessly.

“This is gonna be so dope!” Eli said.

“This?” Finn tilted his head and looked at his friend with amusement. Eli’s enthusiasm was far higher than usual.

“Prom. Our Senior Prom!”

“Yeah...”

The light changed and Eli hit the gas. The car jumped forward, but he quickly eased off the acceleration. The stoplight three blocks ahead was tuning yellow.

“Yeah,” he said. “You don’t care. You’ve got Mac.”

“Uhh...?”

“But it’s a big deal, you know?”

“Prom?”

“Yeah!” He gave Finn an “are you stupid?” look.

“It’s just a dance,” Finn replied.

“It’s what’s after the dance.”

“Huh? Oh!” Finn chuckled. “You and Megan.”

“Duh.”

They slowed to a stop at the next red light. Cross-traffic was light for a Saturday, which was just fine.

“You’re so lucky, you know,” Eli said.

“Lucky?”

“Yeah. You’ve got Mac.”

Finn crinkled his forehead. “But ... you’ve got Megan. And Kaylee before her. And Sophia before her.”

Eli snorted. “Sophia. Ugh.”

“Just because she wouldn’t sleep with you...”

Eli shot him a sideways glance. “Where’d you come up with that?”

“Well, she said—”

“She lied. But ... her reputation, you know?”

Finn let out a long breath.

“Besides, Kaylee was a lot better. And Megan’s pretty good so far. So, no loss.”

“Yeah,” Finn conceded. Then he thought back on Eli’s words. “Wait. So far?”

“Yeah...” Eli grinned. “Prom night’s it.” He waggled his eyebrows. “All of it, if you know?”

Finn rolled his eyes. “I don’t wanna know.”

Eli shrugged. “Suit yourself.” The light changed and the car lunged forward as Eli floored it. Once again, he quickly let up on the gas. It wasn’t a light this time, but the turn into Finn’s neighborhood.

“Drop me at Mac’s,” he said.

Eli shrugged. “Sure.”

Finn leaned back in his seat. Sometimes he wondered why he was still friends with Eli. The guy did not get him at all. But they’d been in the same classes and on the same sports teams since Fourth Grade. So ... inertia, maybe?

He hated that thought, but it was probably right.

MacKenzie threw her arms around Finn’s neck and pulled him down for a kiss the moment he was inside her door. Her lips were hot and the kiss lasted until he pulled back for air. They shared a smile and her brown eyes twinkled.

“I wasn’t gone that long,” he teased.

“Long enough!” She pulled his lips to hers for another passionate kiss before stepping back, still grinning.

“Good shopping?”

“Mmm hmm.”

“Do I get to see it?” He took her hand and they started walking toward the couch in the family room, their usual hangout spot.

“The dress?” She snorted good-naturedly. “No. Not until Prom!”

He chuckled. He’d expected that answer.

“Well, are you going to tell me about it?”

“Mmm.” She tilted her head and put a finger to her chin like she was thinking hard. “Okay.”

They settled onto the couch, her nestling into her side.

“Okay?”

“Mmm.” She grinned at him. “Well, it’s full length but not billowy. Scoop neck.”

“Ah.” He waggled his eyebrows and pointedly looked at her ample chest.

She rolled her eyes. “Perv.”

“And you love it.”

She grinned and rewarded him with a kiss.

“So ... classic,” he said.

“Mmm hmm.”

He grinned. “Cool.”

She smiled, still looking very pleased with herself. Then she ran a fingertip up his arm.

“Okay ... so what else?” he asked.

She playfully shrugged.

“Is there something else about the dress?”

“Not the dress...” she drawled.

“Ah, what else did you buy?”
