Rain Mitchell didn’t believe in fate.
She believed in work.
In showing up when it was easier not to. In listening when people had forgotten how to speak. In giving when no one was keeping score.
That was how she’d ended up at the shelter before sunrise, sleeves rolled up, coffee untouched, already moving between tasks that never stayed finished for long.
Some people came here because they had nowhere else to go.
Rain came because she remembered what it felt like to lose a place in the world and still keep walking.
Her mother had taught her that.
Not with speeches. With example.
Rain had grown up in a house loud in the best ways.
Three brothers. A father who worked too hard and laughed too easily when he finally came home. A mother who turned ordinary moments into something sacred just by being present.
Then one winter, presence became memory.
But not emptiness.
Wisdom stayed.
Little things Rain still heard when life pressed hard: Don’t harden. Just sharpen. Kindness isn’t weakness if it costs you something. Never walk past pain if you have breath to stop.
Jer didn’t go to the shelter looking for anything.
He went because something inside him said, go.
Not urgency.
Direction.
He told himself it was just a way to stay grounded. To remember who he was before the canyon, before the pledge, before the weight of becoming more than one man.
Pat had laughed when Jer mentioned it.
“You saving the world already?” Pat had asked.
Jer had shrugged. “Just trying not to lose it.”
The shelter smelled like coffee and soap and unfinished stories.
Jer stood near the doorway, watching the quiet choreography of people helping people.
Then he saw her.
Not like lightning.
Like memory.
Rain was kneeling beside a young boy near the back wall, speaking softly, her voice carrying the same calm strength Jer remembered from a long time ago.
High school hallways. Group projects. Passing smiles that never became more — but always meant something.
They’d never dated. Never crossed lines.
But they’d always seen each other.
Rain looked up.
Their eyes met across the room.
And just like that, years folded into a single moment.
Not surprise. Not shock.
Recognition.
She stood slowly.
“Jer?” she said.
He smiled. “Rain.”
