Lynn knew before she saw him that this meeting was different.

The old wolf did not take her to the city.

He took her below it.

The entrance was unmarked—an abandoned service stairwell descending beneath a forgotten municipal building, the kind of place no one questioned because no one remembered why it existed. The lights flickered only once as they passed, then steadied into a soft, amber glow that felt ... intentional.

The air changed.

Not colder.

Denser.

Lynn became aware of her own heartbeat in a way that felt intrusive, like the space itself was listening.

“You can still turn back,” the old wolf said quietly.

She lifted her chin. “I’ve already crossed worse lines than a staircase.”

He studied her for a moment, then continued downward.

The chamber beneath the city was vast.

Not cavernous—designed.

Smooth stone walls rose in precise arcs, etched with geometric patterns that seemed to shift if she stared too long. No dust. No decay. The place was maintained, not abandoned.

At the center stood a table of dark glass.

And seated at it—

—was the vampire.

He did not rise when she entered.

He did not bare fangs. Did not smile too widely. Did not smell of rot or blood or decay.

He looked ... composed.

Impeccably dressed in a dark suit that absorbed light rather than reflected it, his posture relaxed, his hands folded loosely before him. His skin was pale, but not sickly. His eyes were the only thing that marked him as other—old, reflective, endlessly patient.

He regarded Lynn as one might regard a long-delayed variable.

“Lynn,” he said, voice smooth, cultured. “You are earlier than I expected.”

She stiffened. “You know my name.”

He tilted his head slightly. “Names are useful. They anchor conversations.”

The old wolf remained near the wall, silent, watchful.

Lynn forced herself to step forward.

“You asked to meet,” she said.

The vampire’s lips curved—not a smile.

“Not exactly,” he replied. “You asked questions. Curiosity is an invitation.”

She felt it then—the pressure.

Not domination.

Attention.

Every instinct in her screamed that this being could cross the room and end her before thought formed—but that wasn’t what unsettled her most.

What unsettled her was the certainty that he wouldn’t need to.

“You’re not afraid,” he observed.

Lynn swallowed. “I’m cautious.”

He nodded approvingly. “Fear clouds judgment. Caution sharpens it.”

He gestured to the seat opposite him.

She hesitated only a fraction of a second before sitting.

“You exist in an interesting position,” the vampire said. “Between systems. Between loyalties. Between what you were and what you may become.”

Lynn’s fingers curled subtly against her thigh. “I exist where I choose.”

“Of course,” he agreed smoothly. “Choice is foundational.”

The word echoed unpleasantly.
