Lynn did not challenge Rain.
That was her first correct instinct in days.
Rain was settled. Rooted. Surrounded by gravity Lynn could feel but not penetrate. Challenging her would have been a spectacle — and a loss.
So Lynn chose Mara.
The challenge was issued properly.
Witnessed. Acknowledged. Irrevocable.
“I challenge your standing,” Lynn said, voice sharp, eyes fixed on Mara. “By ancient right.”
Mara blinked once.
Then nodded.
“So noted.”
Rain felt it immediately — not concern, but clarity. Jer’s jaw tightened, not in anger, but recognition.
This would be quick.
They faced each other in the open field.
No crowd pressed in. No voices rose. The pack formed a loose ring, not to judge — but to feel.
Lynn shifted first.
Too much.
Hybrid form surged outward, claws extending, aura flaring unevenly. Power without coherence.
Mara didn’t fully shift.
She aligned.
Movement replaced aggression. Her form sharpened without expanding. No wasted energy. No display.
Lynn struck.
Mara stepped inside the blow.
Redirected.
One motion. One correction. One moment where Lynn overcommitted — and Mara did not.
The fight ended with Mara’s forearm across Lynn’s throat, pressure precise, breath controlled.
No killing intent.
