Lynn told herself she was being careful.

That was the lie.

Her first mistake had been public—pride masquerading as entitlement. The challenge. The belief that dominance would be enough.

This one was quieter.

And far more dangerous.

She didn’t cross onto pack land.

Not this time.

Instead, Lynn waited near the road that cut through the trees half a mile out—close enough to feel, far enough to avoid immediate consequence. She watched vehicles come and go. Noted patterns. Counted faces.

Information was power.

That was what she had always believed.

She didn’t notice the land itself growing colder around her.

Her phone buzzed.

You’re rushing.

The message steadied her nerves.

I’m observing, she typed back. They won’t even know.

The reply came slower this time.

They already do.

Lynn frowned.

She turned her head slightly—and froze.

Mara stood at the edge of the tree line.

Not advancing.

Not hiding.

Simply present.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Mara said calmly.

Lynn recovered quickly, smoothing her expression. “I wasn’t aware this was restricted.”

Mara tilted her head. “It isn’t.”

The pause stretched.

“But intention is visible,” Mara continued. “And yours isn’t clean.”

Lynn’s jaw tightened. “You don’t get to decide that.”

Mara stepped closer—not threatening, not hesitant.

“No,” she said. “But I get to notice it.”

Something sharp flared in Lynn’s chest—anger, humiliation, fear tangled together.

“This isn’t over,” Lynn said quietly.

Mara nodded once. “No. But this was a mistake.”

Lynn turned and walked away without another word.

She didn’t look back.

That was the error.

Elena woke screaming.

The sound ripped from her chest before she knew why, heart racing, breath shallow, sweat cooling rapidly against her skin.

Rain was there almost immediately.

“It’s okay,” Rain said softly, kneeling beside her. “You’re here.”

Elena nodded, swallowing hard. “I wasn’t.”

The vision had not been symbolic.

That was what unsettled her most.

Stone descending through open air. A sky erased by geometry. Figures in hybrid form—wolf and human and light—standing unmoving as gravity bent around them.
