Home didn’t feel like home.

It felt like a place that remembered him ... even if he wasn’t sure he remembered it anymore.

Jer stepped off the shuttle with a duffel over his shoulder and the quiet awareness that nothing around him had changed—streets the same, buildings the same, people moving through their lives unaware that the world had shifted for someone standing among them.

He didn’t rush.

Didn’t call anyone.

Didn’t announce his return.

Something inside him told him to listen first.

The days that followed were strange in small ways.

Sounds carried farther. Voices revealed more than words. Rooms held moods the way they used to hold air.

He kept to himself, settling back into his apartment, relearning the shape of ordinary life with senses that refused to be ordinary anymore. He avoided mirrors—not out of fear, but because he already knew what he’d see.

The same man.

And not.

The pull never left him.

It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t urgent.

It was steady—like a compass needle that had finally decided which way was north.

Sometimes it tugged when he passed certain streets. Sometimes when he heard a voice in a crowd. Sometimes when he caught a familiar laugh drifting through memory without a face attached to it.

The wolf inside him didn’t push.

He waited.

Three days after he returned, Jer found himself standing outside a small neighborhood gym he hadn’t seen in years.

He didn’t remember deciding to come here.

He just ... arrived.

The place looked the same as it always had—brick walls, faded sign, the sound of weights and muffled music bleeding through the door.

He stood there for a long moment, hand resting on the handle, heart steady but alert.

This is it.

Not danger.

Recognition.

Inside, the smell of iron and sweat hit him like a memory he hadn’t known he missed. He moved through the space quietly, eyes adjusting, senses mapping every corner without effort.

Then he heard it.

Laughter.

Not loud. Not forced.

Real.

Jer turned.

And there he was.

Standing near the free weights, older than memory but exactly the same in every way that mattered. Broader shoulders. A scar at his temple he didn’t remember how he’d gotten. The same stance he’d always had—ready even when relaxed.
