The request didn’t come to Jer.

That mattered.

It came to Rain.

The woman’s name was Elena Carter. Thirty-two. Emergency room nurse. Divorced. No children. She had volunteered at the shelter for years before Rain ever worked there, long before wolves or portals or impossible truths brushed against the edges of her life.

She didn’t ask for power.

She asked for answers.

Rain recognized the difference immediately.

They sat at the old kitchen table on pack land, the house quiet around them. Jer stayed outside—not as distance, but as respect. Anubis lingered farther still, present only if needed.

Elena’s hands trembled slightly as she wrapped them around her mug.

“I know something is happening,” she said. “I don’t know what. But I know people don’t disappear the way they have. I know fear doesn’t move like this unless something is feeding on it.”

Rain didn’t interrupt.

“I also know,” Elena continued, swallowing, “that whatever you are ... you’re not hunting us.”

Rain’s breath slowed.

That mattered too.

“You understand,” Rain said carefully, “that once I answer you, there’s no returning to not knowing.”

Elena nodded. “I figured.”

Rain studied her—not with wolf senses yet. With human ones first.

“You won’t be offered anything tonight,” Rain said. “No gift. No protection. No change.”

Elena looked relieved. Then confused.

“Why?”

“Because choice only means something,” Rain replied, “when fear isn’t pushing it.”

Outside, Pat leaned against the porch railing beside Jer.

“She feels solid,” Pat said quietly.

Jer nodded. “So did I.”

They shared a look.

Both remembered the weight of becoming.

Rain leaned forward.

“There are things in this world that feed on human life,” she said. “Not just blood. Experience. Emotion. Time.”

Elena flinched—but didn’t retreat.

“And there are beings,” Rain continued, “who stand between. Not rulers. Not saviors.”
