The morning after the wedding did not arrive with fanfare.

It came quietly.

Mist clung to the low ground, curling through the fields like something reluctant to leave. The land felt ... eased. Not relaxed—wolves never truly relaxed—but settled into a new shape, the way earth did after a stone finally found its resting place.

Rain woke first.

She lay still for a moment, listening.

Not for danger.

For balance.

Jer slept beside her, one arm heavy across her waist, his breathing slow and even. There was something different in the way he slept now—not softer, but anchored. As if some part of him that had always been standing guard had finally allowed itself to sit down.

Rain smiled faintly.

Married, she thought—not as a title, but as a condition.

Outside, the pack moved with subdued purpose.

The emissaries were still there, but their presence had shifted. Conversations were quieter. Disagreements shorter. A few packs had already begun to make plans to depart—not out of dismissal, but recognition. They had seen what they needed to see.

Others lingered.

Learning.

Watching.

Jer stepped onto the porch with a mug of coffee just as Pat crossed the yard, jacket slung over one shoulder.

“Sleep?” Pat asked.

Jer snorted. “Eventually.”

Pat grinned. “Worth it?”

Jer didn’t hesitate. “Every version of it.”

They stood in companionable silence for a moment, watching Mara emerge from one of the barns, her hair pulled back, sleeves rolled, already halfway into a task she hadn’t been assigned.

Pat’s gaze followed her without him realizing it.

Jer noticed anyway.

Mara felt it before she saw him watching.

Not pressure.

Interest.

She glanced up, caught Pat’s eyes, and for half a second neither of them looked away.

Then both did.

Too quickly.

Rain stepped onto the porch beside Jer just in time to catch the exchange.

“Oh,” she murmured.

Jer hid a smile behind his mug. “Yeah.”

Later, as the day unfolded, the shift became clearer.

Pat found reasons to be where Mara was working—offering help she hadn’t asked for, carrying things she could’ve handled herself. Mara pretended not to notice. She let him stay anyway.
