The wolves never announced the change.
They didn’t need to.
It unfolded over weeks — quiet, deliberate weeks — the kind that passed unnoticed by anyone who didn’t know how to listen.
Rain noticed it first in the accumulation of small things.
A fence line that shifted slightly, not outward, but cleaner.
A barn wall that looked the same but no longer echoed when struck.
Earth that had been disturbed ... and then carefully returned to looking untouched.
Nothing dramatic.
Nothing obvious.
Just the subtle sense that the land was learning new habits.
The pack worked in cycles.
Never all at once.
Never in patterns that could be tracked.
Tunnels were carved beneath existing structures, reinforced with old techniques refined by modern tools. They didn’t scar the surface. They followed it — using roots, rock, and existing foundations as cover.
Buildings were hardened from the inside out.
Support beams doubled.
Load paths redirected.
Hidden access points built where shadows already fell.
From the road, from the air, from a casual glance?
Pack land still looked like five quiet acres, a farmhouse, and a couple of pole barns.
That was the point.
Jer walked the perimeter with Pat one evening as the sun dipped low, boots crunching softly on gravel that looked no different than it ever had.
“If I didn’t know,” Pat said, “I’d never see it.”
Jer nodded. “That’s the best part.”
Pat glanced toward the tree line, then back at the buildings. “From the outside, it’s just land.”
“And on the inside?” Jer asked.
Pat smiled grimly. “It’s a body. With bones. And ways to move without being seen.”
Jer exhaled slowly. “Hiding in plain sight.”
“Our strength,” Pat agreed. “Anyone can build a fortress. Wolves build cover.”
Rain moved among the work crews over the weeks, offering guidance only when needed. She never pushed for speed.
“Let the land keep its face,” she reminded them more than once. “If it looks defensive, it becomes a challenge.”
The born wolves understood immediately.
This wasn’t about preparing for war.
