The city didn’t notice the change.

That was the strange part.

No alarms. No sirens. No headlines.

Just four people in a quiet house deciding something that would ripple farther than any of them could see.

They didn’t call it a meeting.

They just ... gathered.

Rain stood near the window. Jer leaned against the wall. Pat sat forward in a chair, elbows on his knees. Mara stood beside him, not touching — but close enough that presence mattered.

No one spoke at first.

Because everyone felt it.

The shift.

“We can’t keep reacting,” Pat said finally.

Not loud. Not dramatic.

Just honest.

Jer nodded. “Agreed.”

Rain turned from the window. “Then we decide who we are — before someone else decides for us.”

Mara swallowed, then spoke. “I don’t want to be saved anymore. I want to stand.”

Silence followed.

Not hesitation.

Recognition.

Jer straightened. “Then we do this right.”

Rain stepped closer. “No throne. No hierarchy. No one above anyone else.”

Pat lifted his head. “Shared responsibility.”

Mara nodded. “Shared consequence.”

Rain smiled faintly. “Shared strength.”

And just like that, the pack was no longer a circumstance.

It was a choice.

They laid it out quietly.

Not laws. Not commands.

Principles.

· We protect without ruling.

· We lead without dominating.

· We fight only when there is no other way.

· We never forget we were human first.

No one argued.

Because everyone already believed it.

Later that night, the young vampires made their second mistake.

They didn’t come in numbers.

They came in confidence.

Three again.

Different faces. Same arrogance.

They followed Pat and Mara as they walked home from the corner store — not close enough to be seen, not far enough to be safe.

They thought the wolves were still learning.

They didn’t realize the wolves had just decided.
