The city was quiet in the way that meant nothing was wrong.

And everything was changing.

Mara stood alone on the back steps of the house, the night air cool against her skin. The sky above was clear, stars scattered like distant promises that never hurried and never forgot.

She hadn’t told anyone she was coming out here.

She hadn’t needed to.

Some decisions don’t require witnesses.

They require honesty.

Inside, Rain watched her through the kitchen window.

Not as a guard. Not as a watcher.

As someone who understood what it meant to stand at the edge of becoming.

Jer stood beside her, arms folded loosely.

“She’s close,” Rain said softly.

Jer nodded. “I know.”

Pat stayed in the living room.

Not because he didn’t care.

Because he cared enough not to stand in the way of her choice.

Mara closed her eyes.

Not to escape the world.

To finally listen to herself inside it.

She didn’t feel fear.

She didn’t feel excitement.

She felt ... clarity.

The door she had sensed since the rescue was still there.

Still open.

Still waiting.

Not pulling.

Not pushing.

Just present.

Rain stepped outside quietly and came to stand a few feet away.

“I won’t tell you what to do,” Rain said gently. “But if you want someone to walk with you to the edge ... I can.”

Mara smiled. “I’d like that.”

They stood together beneath the open sky.

“I keep thinking,” Mara said, “that becoming something more means losing something.”

Rain shook her head. “Not if it’s done right. Then it just means you finally stop carrying what never belonged to you.”

Mara felt that truth settle deep.

Jer joined them.

Not as a leader.

As a witness.

“You don’t owe us anything,” he said. “Not for the rescue. Not for protection. Not for what comes after.”

Mara met his eyes. “I know.”

Jer nodded once. “Then whatever you choose ... it’s already right.”

Mara took a breath.

And stepped forward.

Not toward power.

Toward truth.

Rain felt the moment arrive the way you feel the tide shift before the wave.

Not in sound.

In certainty.

She met Mara’s eyes.

“Are you ready?” Rain asked.

Mara nodded.

“Yes.”

The bite was not sudden.

Not violent.

Not rushed.

Rain stepped close and rested her forehead briefly against Mara’s — not as dominance, but as sisterhood.

Then, gently, with reverence, she gave the gift.

Not claiming.

Not marking.

Welcoming.

Mara did not flinch.

She closed her eyes.

And crossed.

Jer felt the shift immediately.

Not power.
