Mara thought the quiet would fade.

That the strange calm she’d felt since the rescue would settle back into something familiar.

It didn’t.

Instead, it deepened.

Not in fear. In awareness.

She sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee that had gone cold while she stared out the window.

The city moved the way it always had.

Cars. Voices. Ordinary life.

But she no longer felt like she was standing outside of it, looking in.

She felt like she was standing at a door.

Rain sat across from her, sorting mail into neat piles.

“You don’t have to rush anything,” Rain said quietly, without looking up. “Whatever you’re feeling — it gets to take the time it needs.”

Mara smiled faintly. “You always talk like that?”

Rain smiled back. “Only when it matters.”

Mara took a breath. “I keep thinking ... if I hadn’t been taken ... none of this would be happening.”

Mara nodded slowly.

Jer joined them a few minutes later, coffee in hand, expression steady.

“I’m not here to convince you of anything,” he said. “But I owe you honesty.”

Mara turned toward him.

“There’s more to what happened to you than bad luck,” Jer continued. “There are forces in this city that don’t play fair. And there are people — like us — who stand in their way.”

Mara studied him. “And you’re not normal.”

Jer smiled faintly. “No. We’re not.”

Rain rested her hand lightly over Mara’s. “And that doesn’t mean you have to become anything you’re not ready for.”

Mara felt the truth of that settle in her chest.

That afternoon, Mara walked alone through the small backyard behind the house.

Not because she wanted space from them.
