Mara woke to the sound of rain on a different window.
Not the alley rain. Not the kind that hides danger.
This rain was gentle. Patient.
The kind that washed streets instead of trapping them.
She lay still for a moment, taking inventory.
No restraints. No darkness pressing close. No cold fear in her chest.
Just a blanket pulled up to her shoulders ... and the unfamiliar comfort of safety.
Rain was sitting in the chair near the window, a mug of tea cooling in her hands.
She hadn’t meant to fall asleep there. She had simply stayed. And stayed.
When Mara shifted, Rain looked up immediately.
“You’re okay,” Rain said softly. “You’re safe.”
Mara searched her face for lies.
Found none.
She nodded once. “I know.”
And surprised herself by meaning it.
Later, when the house had fully woken, Jer stood in the kitchen speaking quietly with Pat.
Pat hadn’t slept much.
Not from fear.
From weight.
“I can’t explain it,” Pat said. “I’ve rescued people before. Helped strangers. That wasn’t new.”
Jer leaned against the counter. “But this was different.”
Pat nodded. “Yeah. This felt like something being set in motion.”
Jer didn’t answer right away.
Finally he said, “Sometimes destiny doesn’t announce itself. It just shows up and waits to see what kind of men we are.”
Pat exhaled slowly. “That’s the part that scares me.”
Jer met his eyes. “Good. It should.”
Mara sat at the small dining table later, a bowl of soup in front of her, Rain across from her.
They didn’t talk about the alley.
They didn’t talk about the room she’d woken up in.
They talked about normal things.
Her job at the café. Rain’s work at the shelter. Jer’s terrible taste in music according to Pat.
Laughter came easier than Mara expected.
Normal was medicine.
After a while, Rain walked Mara to the small back porch.
The rain had stopped again. The air smelled clean.
Mara leaned on the railing. “You didn’t have to stay with me.”
Rain smiled gently. “I wanted to.”
