Mara woke to the sound of water.

Not close. Not far.

Somewhere in between—dripping, steady, patient.

Her eyes opened to darkness that felt old. Not the dark of night. The dark of places forgotten by time.

She tried to move.

Her wrists weren’t bound.

Her legs weren’t trapped.

Which somehow made it worse.

Because it meant whoever brought her here wasn’t afraid of her leaving.

They were confident she couldn’t.

The room smelled like concrete and metal and something faintly sweet beneath it.

Blood.

Not fresh.

Stored.

Mara pushed herself up slowly, heart steadying not because she wasn’t afraid—but because fear had taught her how to breathe through worse.

Footsteps echoed outside the door.

Young voices. Careless voices.

Laughter that didn’t belong in places like this.

They came in like they owned the air.

Three of them.

The same trio that had once underestimated two wolves on a quiet street.

Still cocky. Still untested.

Still drunk on power that hadn’t yet taught them humility.

One of them leaned against the wall, arms crossed. “You’re safe,” he said with a grin that meant the opposite. “As long as you cooperate.”

Mara didn’t answer.

She lifted her chin instead.

Not defiance.

Dignity.

That made him pause.

Across the city, Rain felt the shift before Jer finished tying his shoes.

Not fear.

Direction.

“They took her,” Rain said quietly.

Jer looked up. “Who?”

Rain shook her head. “I don’t know her name. But I know she’s young. And she’s brave. And she’s not meant to be where she is.”

Pat stood by the door already.

“I felt it too,” he said. “Like something pulling me forward.”

Jer met his eyes.

“Then we don’t wait.”

They moved.

Not in panic.

In purpose.

The building wasn’t hidden.

It didn’t need to be.

Old industrial block near the river. Forgotten by developers. Ignored by patrols.

Perfect for people who believed themselves untouchable.

Jer stood at the corner, Rain beside him, Pat just behind.

No weapons. No speeches.

Just alignment.

Rain closed her eyes for a second.

The wolf inside her did not roar.

It pointed.

Inside, the young vampires were still laughing.

Still careless.

Still convinced power meant safety.

They didn’t hear the door open.

They felt the change in the air.

One of them turned first.

Too late.

The fight wasn’t long.

It wasn’t pretty.
