The rain started as a suggestion.

Not a storm. Not a downpour.

Just enough to turn the air silver and soften the edges of the world.

Jer and Rain had been laughing when it caught them—one of those sudden summer showers that felt less like weather and more like invitation. They ran the last block to his place, shoes slipping, breath warm in the cool night, the city blurring behind them.

By the time they reached his door, their laughter had quieted.

Not because the joy had left.

Because something else had arrived.

Inside, the lights were low.

The rain tapped gently against the windows like a patient witness.

Rain stood near the doorway, brushing damp hair back from her face. Jer watched her—not with urgency, not with hunger—but with the stillness of someone who knew this moment was not about taking.

It was about choosing.

They moved toward each other without speaking.

No rush. No need.

Some moments don’t ask for words. They ask for presence.

Outside, the rain kept falling.

Inside, the world grew smaller.

Not closed.

Focused.

They sat together on the edge of the couch, foreheads touching, breathing in the quiet space between heartbeats.

Rain rested her hand over his.

“Whatever happens next,” she said softly, “I don’t want it to be about chance.”

Jer met her eyes.

“It won’t be,” he said. “It’ll be about us.”

She smiled—not shy, not uncertain.

Certain.

The storm deepened.

Then, without warning— It stopped.

Not slowly. Not fading.

It simply ... ended.

Outside the window, clouds parted.

And high above the city, unseen by either of them, the full moon rose into her highest throne—silver and whole and ancient.

Luna at her summit.

They didn’t notice the light.

They noticed only each other.

The closeness. The trust. The quiet decision that had been forming since the first time they’d recognized one another again in the shelter hallway.

Rain’s breath caught—not in fear.

In surrender to something sacred.

Jer felt the wolf stir—not in hunger.

In recognition.

The being of light did not speak.

It listened.

And in that listening, the moment became more than two lives meeting.

It became a crossing.

When the bite came, it was not violence.

It was offering.

Not taking. Not claiming.

Giving.

Rain did not pull away.

She leaned in.

And in that single, unguarded act— The world shifted.

Jer felt it immediately.

Not in himself.

In her.

Her body softened against him—not with weakness, but with the stillness of someone stepping through a door only they could see.

Her breath slowed. Her eyes closed.

And Jer understood.

She had gone to that place.

The space between the world and whatever waited beyond it. The place of choice.

The place where the wolf meets the soul.

Rain did not fall.

She was carried.
