There were no signs.
No tension in the air. No sense of danger pressing at the edges of the day.
Just a quiet Saturday morning and the kind of sunlight that made the world feel gentle for a few hours.
Those were the moments Jer treasured most now.
Not because they were rare.
But because he understood how fragile they really were.
Rain met him at the small park near her childhood home — the one where they used to sit on opposite ends of the same bleachers during football games, pretending not to notice each other while always knowing exactly where the other was.
They walked the path that circled the pond.
Not rushed. Not distracted.
Present.
“That shelter is taking more out of me lately,” Rain said. “Not in a bad way. Just ... I feel like I’m carrying more stories home.”
Jer nodded. “Some people carry weight. Some people turn it into purpose.”
Rain smiled sideways at him. “You always talk like you’ve lived three lives.”
“Maybe I have,” he said. “I just finally stopped running from the last one.”
They sat on a bench near the water.
Ducks drifted lazily across the surface. Children laughed somewhere behind them. A father called out a name that sounded like home.
Rain rested her elbows on her knees.
“You ever notice,” she said, “how love is always shown as this big dramatic thing? Fireworks. Chaos. Obsession.”
Jer glanced at her. “What do you think it really is?”
Rain looked out over the pond. “I think real love is the moment you realize someone else’s well-being feels like part of your own job description.”
Jer felt that land deep.
“That sounds about right.”
Rain turned to him fully then.
“Jer ... I need to say something, and I don’t want it to sound like fear. Because it’s not.”
He waited.
“I feel like our lives are moving into something heavier than either of us expected,” she said. “Not in a scary way. In a meaningful way. And I don’t want to be the person who stands beside you and pretends not to notice.”
Jer studied her — not as a protector, not as a leader, not as a wolf.
As a man who had finally met someone who understood the cost of choosing.
“You won’t be standing beside me pretending,” he said quietly. “You’ll be standing with me deciding.”
Rain smiled — not softly, not shyly.
