Rain first felt it on a Tuesday.

Not danger.

Interruption.

Her routine had always been a comfort—leave the shelter at dusk, walk two blocks to the bus stop, call her father if the day had been heavy, listen to her brothers argue in the background. Normal sounds. Normal life.

That night, the sounds were still there.

But something else slipped in between them.

A pause where there shouldn’t have been one. A footstep that echoed a beat too late. A feeling that didn’t say run ... but whispered look again.

Rain did.

And saw nothing.

Which made her slow her pace.

Jer felt it before she told him.

Not fear. Not urgency.

A tightening in the air.

The wolf inside him didn’t rise.

It listened.

The being of light did not speak.

It waited.

Jer stood by his apartment window, watching the street below as people passed through the evening like they always had—unaware that the world layered itself differently once you learned how to see.

His phone vibrated.

A text from Rain.

Do you ever get the feeling you’re being watched ... but not in a scary way? More like in a measuring way?

Jer’s fingers stilled over the screen.

Then he typed back.

Yeah. Where are you?

Rain didn’t answer right away.

Not because she couldn’t.

Because she had just stepped onto the bus.

The man who sat two rows behind her didn’t look at her once.

But she felt his attention the way you feel heat from a fire you’re not facing.

She took the seat by the window.

The bus pulled away.

And the feeling stayed.

Jer didn’t wait.

He grabbed his jacket and moved.

Not running. Not rushing.

Tracking.

He caught the bus three stops later, stepping on just as Rain stepped off near the corner by her building.

They saw each other at the same time.

Relief passed between them without words.

“You okay?” Jer asked quietly.

Rain nodded. “Yeah. I just ... felt off.”

Jer glanced down the street.

A man stood near the corner store.

Too still.

Not pretending to shop. Not pretending to wait.

Just ... standing.

Jer didn’t stare.

He didn’t need to.

The wolf inside him didn’t growl.

It marked.

They walked together toward Rain’s building.

Normal pace. Normal posture.

Nothing that said danger.

Everything that said awareness.

“Am I imagining this?” Rain asked.

Jer shook his head. “No. You’re noticing.”

“That doesn’t make me feel better.”

“It shouldn’t,” Jer said gently. “But it makes you safer.”

They reached her door.
