Some connections don’t begin.
They continue.
Jer and Rain didn’t fall into something new — they stepped back into something familiar that had simply been waiting for time to catch up.
They started small.
Coffee after her shift at the shelter. Short walks through neighborhoods that still remembered their footsteps from years ago. Conversations that picked up in the middle instead of at the beginning.
Not romance.
Not yet.
Recognition.
They sat one evening on the low brick wall outside the shelter, watching the sky turn the soft blue that came just before night settled in.
“You ever think about how strange it is,” Rain said, “that you can know someone when you’re young ... and only really understand them later?”
Jer nodded. “I think we spend the first half of life learning who we are. The second half learning who we were meant to be to each other.”
Rain smiled at that. “That’s dangerously thoughtful.”
Jer laughed. “I’ve had time.”
Rain told him more about her family.
Three brothers — loud, loyal, impossible to ignore. A father who tried his best and loved harder than he knew how to show. A mother who had left too early but somehow stayed in every decision Rain made.
“She used to say,” Rain said softly, “that the heart is a muscle. If you don’t use it to lift other people, it forgets how strong it is.”
Jer listened.
Not like someone collecting facts.
Like someone receiving something sacred.
Jer didn’t tell her everything.
Not about wolves. Not about vampires. Not about governors watching from towers.
He told her about the parts of himself that still felt safe to share.
The years away. The weight of coming home different. The feeling of standing between who you were and who you were becoming.
Rain understood more than he expected.
“I think we all have that moment,” she said. “When you realize you’re not who you were ... and you’re not done becoming.”
Jer met her eyes.
“That’s exactly it.”
Across the city, in rooms where light never quite reached the corners, conversations were also happening.
Quiet ones.
Measured ones.
The vampire governor stood with his hands clasped behind his back, listening as reports came in.
