This is the story of a brilliant young man who, at seventeen, has A grades in every subject he’s taken. There’s not a university that wouldn’t take him.
The problem was that Barry didn’t want to go to university. He wanted to be a diamond trader because it was a profitable business. There weren’t many diamond traders. Those that were, were primarily Jewish.
Barry lived with his Mum, Babs, on the west coast of northern England. The area was home to some of the best racehorse trainers.
Babs’s father had been a Maths teacher. In his mid-twenties, he had set up a bookmaking business. He was very successful by the time he was forty.
