The Sanctum-Unknown place

Zarius felt the silver sun rays on his face through the window in his room. After what had happened at the clearing, he reached the sanctum, and Selyne explained something that left him with more questions than answers. She pointed him to a room, and for once, he immediately fell asleep, courtesy of what happened with the beasts and after.

He sat up, looking out the window at the forest edge, then entered the bathroom. After showering, he stepped out and looked at his torn pants; his shirt was nowhere to be found, having left it in the forest.

He sighed, thinking it had become a habit for him, opening the door and stepping out. Hearing voices, he walked toward it, and Selyne was standing there with others. They stopped talking and stared at him.

“Uh ... do you have any clothes?” he asked, looking at her

Selyne nodded and looked at the first priestess, who stood there, mouth agape, with the other priestesses.

“Menka”, she said, voice stern with amusement

“Uh ... yes.” She handed him some clothes, and he took them. And turns back, mumbling thanks on the way.

Selyne cleared her throat, and everyone turned toward her, looking chagrined.

After dressing, Zarius returned to the big hall, which looked like a prayer hall, and Megal guided him toward the dining hall.

Megal’s friends were there too, and they watched him eat breakfast in silence, the youngsters throwing him a wary look now and then. Which he ignored.

After finishing, “Okay, I will leave then”, he said, leaning back.

Selyne looked at him and said in a calm and final voice, “Not yet”

Zarius raised his eyebrows at her, “Why?” his voice equally hard with an edge.

The teens and other priestesses were shocked at his tone and looked between the two, now staring at each other. Selyne sighed after a moment and said,” Your work here isn’t finished yet”

“I’m not doing any work, especially the work I don’t want to”

“But you will have to, it’s connected with the answers you seek”

Silence. Then, “What is that?” he asked.

Selyne shrugged, “I don’t know, but you will soon”

Zarius stood and left without another word. He went out and saw the beasts pacing along the forest edge, then headed toward them, ignoring the curious looks from the people near the sanctum.

Seeing him, the beast neared, and the female whined, while the male growled at him lowly, both standing on either side of him.

“Is there anything out there still?” he wondered aloud.

They looked at him, heads tilted. Zarius sighed and reached out to them, this time easily sensing them.

What are you?” he asked, at least that’s what he tried to.

The male growled as if talking to him. He then heard “Umythra” and looked at it, confused. “Our kind name,” the male explained.

Zarius slowly nodded, rolling the name silently on his lips.

Are there any others?”

Not here”, the female replied.

He nodded, “Do you have a name?”

Aurai”

Tyren”

Zarius chuckled and said, “Of course. Why does that surprise me? By the way, Zarius,” he added.

They nodded, and three of them stared at the forest in silence. Then Aurai ran into the forest, and Tyren followed her behind. Zarius stood there, looking at their back, then ran after them.

“They are running into the forest again”, Megal said, watching them.

“Let them”, Selyne said, looking thoughtfully.

“Is ... is he the red ghost?” Megal asked hesitantly. Selyne and Menka looked at her. “The one who killed two hundred?”

The twelve of them waited for their response and gasped when they heard it.

“Yes”, Selyne said quietly.

Megal yelled, “What? You let a murderer stay here?”

Menka warned, “Megal, don’t speak of what you don’t understand.”

“Is it really so hard to understand that he’s a murderer?” Canos said now. Others murmured their agreement.

“So, you sent us to him, knowing he’s a murderer, and told us to mention murders and the ghost?” Megal asked.

“I explicitly warned you not to provoke him,” Selyne said calmly, looking at everyone.

They fell silent,

She asked, “And he didn’t hurt any of you, even after you tried. Does that make him a murderer?”

No one responded, and Selyne stood up. “And don’t talk about this place; you can’t even comprehend what you are all standing on right now.”

She then left the room, Menka following her. Others exchanged a look of confusion at her last words.

The Forest

Zarius and the beasts ran into the forest, neatly avoiding the branches, almost matching their speed. They ran past the clearing and crossed to the other side, the trees even denser here, with some sunlight sneaking through the canopy.

The beasts halted beside a river similar to the one near his cabin, though this one is faster and wider. Zarius gazed at it with wonder and longing, his thoughts drifting back to the cabin and her.

The beasts jumped into the river, swam to the other side, and looked at him from there. Zarius stared at them, then jumped into the river and swam toward the other side. The three of them slowly walked.

Zarius reached out to them and asked, “Where are we going?”

You will know”, Tyren said, not explaining further.

They continued walking, and after a while, deeper into the forest, Zarius sensed a distortion around him, with his Node flickering slightly; he attributed it to the aftereffects of the previous night.

They then came into another river, which looked exactly like the one they crossed earlier,

“What...” he began, then heard a sound and turned. And froze.

Reyrin and Reylin stood at the riverbank, as they did every evening since arriving here.

The water mirrored them perfectly, too perfectly. Twin reflections stared back, golden eyes gleaming in the slow current, their beauty impossible to ignore, even to themselves. The river flowed on, indifferent, while both sisters remained still, each lost in a private, unspoken thought.

“What are you two staring at?”

The calm, deep voice came from behind. They turned, and forgot how to breathe.

The man standing there needed no introduction. Tall, taller than most men, and broader, his presence filled the space without effort. Wild crimson hair stirred in the breeze, red eyes fixed on them with quiet intensity, lips curved in faint amusement.

Behind him stood two others: a boy and a girl, both watching silently.

Reyrin recovered first. “Nothing,” she said evenly. “Just enjoying the view.”

The boy stepped forward, too close, and leaned beside them, eyes dropping deliberately to the water.

“Yes,” he said mildly, staring at their reflections. “Beautiful view.”

Heat rushed to their cheeks. Both sisters stepped back instinctively.

“My brother Syreus,” the girl behind him said dryly. “Always a charmer.”

Syreus glanced sideways at her. “I don’t have to try, Syra.”

“It’s late,” the other boy said calmly. “We should go.”

“Yes, Cranil,” Syra replied, already turning. “You could learn something from my brother.”

Cranil didn’t miss a beat. “I don’t need to speak to be charming.”

Soft laughter followed as they walked away from the river.

The twins lingered.

They exchanged a brief, unsettled look, then both turned back toward the water. The river flowed as before, but something felt ... absent.

“Come on, you two,” Syra called.

Reyrin and Reylin shared one last glance before following, an unfamiliar weight settling in their chests, as though they were leaving something unfinished behind.

Zarius remained at the riverbank, watching their retreating figures until they disappeared into the night, uneasy for reasons he refused to name.

The beasts then turned around and returned. Zarius followed them silently. They stayed back at the edge of the forest as Zarius went toward the sanctum.

They looked at each other, “Hope it’s not too late”, Aurai said.

Tyren just nodded, then they returned to the forest.

Natlin stood near the vehicle. The children were talking and laughing in one side of the vehicle, but her thoughts were elsewhere, specifically at what happened the previous night, the etching of the mark and then ... the dream, no, not a dream, she thought to herself and blushed, looking around.

She exhaled aloud. It felt so real. She murmured, her hands instinctively caressing the dress where the mark was, where his hand had been; it was as if he were with her. But how? She sighed once again. Her gaze went toward Arnon, and she readied herself for a wave of guilt to hit her, but surprisingly, it didn’t.

What... Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by footsteps nearby, then by footsteps all around. Glenis and Baltic, on the bike at the rear of the vehicle, came alert. Around them, cloaked figures emerged from the forest edge,

Everyone except the children came out of the vehicle and stood around, ready to protect.

Around fifty figures surrounded them, guns raised.

“Hunters”, Arnon whispered in fear. Others looked at him

Natlin took a step forward. “Don’t”, a man said, stepping forward.

He walked toward Natlin, his eyes level with Natlin’s, but his size broader and harder.

“Don’t try anything”, he continued, “we can prevent the bloodshed”

Natlin stopped, looking around her, guns pointed at them. She knew they were outnumbered.

“What do you want?” she asked.

The man stepped closer, too close, and she stood her ground; he leaned close.

“You”, he said, chuckling, “all of you”, he added, looking around, eyes fixed on the vehicle.

Natlin stood there, not knowing what to do. She looked around once again,

“Cuff them”, the man said, and two figures moved and cuffed the men. “If you cooperate, the children will live”

Natlin gasped and looked at where he pointed. A man stood far away, a small missile mounted on his shoulders, aimed at the vehicle. A man cuffed her hands; she felt her energy dim. Eyes widened.

“Yes, you can’t use your ability now”, the man said, smiling. “Now move to the vehicle”

They pushed everyone into the vehicle, and the group started moving. Natlin consoled the children, and silence stretched.

“What did you say, Hunters?” Balic asked Arnon.

Arnon nodded, “I heard of them, they capture people with abilities and sell them to the people who are willing to pay, like the lab”

Everyone was surprised and looked at him, “How did they find us?” Glenis asked. “Are they going to sell us?”

Arnon shrugged. Everyone fell silent. After some time, they came to a stop, and the vehicle door opened,

“Come out”, a female voice said, “We are going to stay the night”

Everyone piled out. Natlin looked around. They were at the end of the street, overlooking the forest. Then the hunters pushed them into the forest and came onto the clearing.

After issuing them food and eating, the hunters lay down on the forest ground. As she leaned against the tree, Natlin looked around. The hunters had gone to sleep, only four standing guard; the children slept in a pile, Balic and Glenis on one side of her, Arnon and the other two men on the other.

She thought about how they knew about their group and where they were. She didn’t understand why she let Arnon convince her, why they did this. Now they were in this situation because of her, because of the last night...

She heard a thud and turned toward the sound in time to see four guards fall to the ground with a small arrow in their necks. She looked around in surprise, then heard a voice from behind her.

“Stay still”, and her cuffs were released “Get away with the children”, the voice said.

Natlin quickly woke the children, silencing them. The attacker now released the men with her.

They slowly backed away from the site toward the vehicle when Arnon stumbled into a hunter’s foot and fell.

“What?” he sat up, shouting, and was immediately silenced by the slotted throat, blood spurting, but now the hunters came alert.

“Run”, the voice said, and everyone started running.

“Shit”, one hunter cursed and shouted, “they are escaping”

Natlin and her group reached their vehicle, and the children climbed inside. An energy blast whizzed past them and struck the vehicle, making the children scream.

“Start the vehicle”, Natlin screamed. A man opened the door and was immediately shot down by an energy blast.

“No”, Natlin screamed along with the children.

The hunters started firing at them, but the cloaked figure ran at them, and bodies fell in her wake.

“Fuck, get them fast”, shouted one, but a blade plunged into his mouth and throat, silencing him permanently.

A man near him screamed in terror and ran away. “Oh shit,” another gasped, backing away. The figure smiled cruelly under the mask. “It’s her, run.”

All the hunters turned toward him with wide eyes, and the head of the man rolled away, causing everyone to pause for a moment.

“Kill them all”, the leader commanded and started firing.

All the guns fired at the vehicle, Balic and Arnon firing back with Glenis and Natlin behind the vehicle, avoiding the fire, trying to protect the children.

Natlin tracked the figure moving between the hunters and killing them brutally and efficiently.

“Damn”, Glenis, beside her, gasped

The hunters now started to fire blindly in rage,

“Stay here”, Natlin told Glenis, then ran toward the hunters.

A man looked surprised at seeing her suddenly in front of him. The gun was ripped from his hand and fired at him. He fell dead, eyes wide in surprise. Natlin then fired at two others before returning to the vehicle. A body slammed into her suddenly, and they rolled onto the ground.

“Got you”, the leader groaned, yanked the gun away from her and hit her with the hilt. Natlin then saw a knife come toward her chest, and raised her hand to block, but it was too late.

She deflected the knife at the last moment, but it plunged into her stomach. She screamed, then the man lifted off from her, from a kick. The cloaked woman stood over him, a gun pointing at him.

The firing stopped, and the few remaining hunters started pulling back. The man smiled and,

“Launch it”, he ordered.

Then they heard a faint click, turned toward the sound, saw a blinding fire, and watched a mini-missile sear through the air toward the vehicle.

“NOOO...” Natlin screamed, trying to stand, blood running from her stomach.

The woman ran toward the vehicle, but she knew it was too late. Everyone around the vehicle stood frozen.

Zarius was trying to sleep, but it had once again started to elude him. It was the same feeling, he felt restless, same as when he felt on the night, he killed them almost two weeks before, after his running with the beast, watching the mysterious twin girls at the river, he went into the town with the teens, roamed around, and returned to his room at the sanctum after dinner.

That’s when he started feeling restless, his chest tightening, and suddenly his Node flared, the lines of symbol on his chest burning bright once again. The air around him shimmered, and his hand twitched.

Natlin watched the small missile hurtling toward the vehicle, toward the children and the men, the figure running toward it, but she knew it was futile.
