Unknown Place

Zarius reached the part of town and was surprised; this area is more developed than the other towns he has seen so far- tall buildings, clean roads with vehicles passing even at this late hour, people milling around, restaurants and other entertainment venues still open, digital boards flickering in different colours. The area looks like a busy commercial centre; this seems more than just a town.

“Wow”, Zarius muttered, having never seen a place like this.

The girl chuckled, “Surprised?”

Zarius just nodded, looking around. They went past the road and wove through the houses. Everything looked big and advanced. At the outskirts of the housing area, a vast building stood out, unlike the other buildings he had seen. People were coming and going; the place seemed calm, with no honks or other vehicle sounds.

The girl pointed that way, and Zarius drove the bike toward the building. People stopped, nodded at the girl and looked at him curiously, then continued.

Soon they came around the building toward another small one, where a few bikes stood, and eleven people stood outside. They neared the group.

“Finally. Megal, what took you so long?” one boy asked.

Megal shrugged, “He was looking around a lot, Canos. This is his first time.”

Others looked at them, then nodded. “Come in,” Canos said, already walking, and everyone followed.

Zarius entered the building, which resembled the large one, and found the same calm atmosphere, noting the pictures and symbols.

“Is this some kind of religious place?” Zarius asked

Others looked at him and nodded. They entered a hall and sat down. Zarius did the same. Religious, he thought, when they are scientifically advanced, what an irony.

“You can stay here”, Canos said, pointing to a bed in a corner.

Zarius nodded, “Thanks, I will leave in the morning”

“To where?”

Zarius just shrugged, and the others exchanged a look.

“Your name?”

He didn’t answer; he went to the bed and lay down, eyes closed.

The group left him alone. Zarius opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling, sleep evading him as his thoughts raced. How and why did I come here? And what is that place? the pull. He sighed and went out.

He looked around and moved to the edge of the forest, then lay down, staring at the twin moons.

He heard a sound and turned around. A bird was perched on a tree branch, looking directly at him with glowing eyes, one silver and one gold, that felt familiar. He sat up suddenly, thinking of the older man. The bird flew away into the forest, and he stood up and followed it without hesitation.

Megal stood by her room’s window, reflecting on the events in the forest and how they led her to the place where he was staying. She recalled the high priestess of the sanctum summoning her and instructing them to go to the edge of the great forest and bring anyone there back into the city.

They felt confused because they had never encountered such a request from the high priestess, and it seemed almost like an order. Her final words echoed in her mind: “Do not provoke him,” she cautioned, meeting everyone’s gaze.

They thought it was strange, but the moment he dodged the knife even while he was sleeping, and blocked the electric staff without a second glance, she knew why. She was afraid he would retaliate after that mistake, but he didn’t; his strange questions and pointing toward the forest and asking, almost like...

Suddenly, she saw a shadow near the forest, then him standing at the forest edge; he lay on the bare ground, staring at the sky. She studied him for a moment and jerked when he sat up suddenly, looked toward a tree and then ran into the forest.

“Damn”, she cursed and ran to the others. Soon, they gathered at the forest edge and ran in the direction he had gone.

Zarius chased after the bird, keeping his eyes on it as he moved through the dense trees. After a while, the bird took flight and disappeared. He scanned the area for any sign of it, but it was gone. Gradually, he turned and looked around.

He saw a wide clearing in the middle of the dense forest; it didn’t seem man-made, as if the trees had avoided that spot. He stepped forward and entered the clearing.

He couldn’t see anything; it was completely dark. He sighed, wondering why he even ran after the bird. Then he turned to leave, but sensed something behind him. He turned around slowly and froze.

On one side of the clearing, he observed a faint glow on the ground. He cautiously approached and was surprised to discover a pile of ruined stones. He suspected it was a religious site, as the stone pillar and remaining walls displayed the same symbols he had seen in the town’s building.

His Node flickered briefly, and he experienced the same pull as before. He looked at it more closely and noticed that the glow came from below, with the ruins stacked on top.

He approached the spot where he thought the glow originated and effortlessly lifted the fallen stone pillar, tossing it aside. Then, he began removing all the ruins around the glow.

Then he heard a growl behind him. He slowly turned toward the sound and saw a pair of glowing eyes staring at him; a second pair appeared beside the first. His brows furrowed in confusion, as he hadn’t sensed them until they growled, and his vision adjusted to see two enormous animals staring at him, growling. He stepped away from the ruins and neared the animals.

Megal and her friends ran toward the forest following Zarius; they couldn’t reach or stop him before he arrived at the forest, before he could see it. But it was too late.

They came to a halt at the edge of the clearing and stared at him.

“Shit, he is near it”, Megal whispered.

They saw Zarius lifting the stone pillars and throwing them aside effortlessly.

“Fuck”, a boy breathed out, stunned.

Megal turned toward him “Now you understand why she said don’t provoke him”

The boy nodded, glancing at the electric baton in his hand, the same one he had attempted to attack Zarius with.

“Where are they?” Canos asked, every eye scanning the clearing and forest.

Then they heard a growl that sent a chill down their spines, the one they tried to avoid at all costs for their lives.

“There”, one girl gasped out, pointing in a direction.

They all turned and saw the two massive shadows approaching Zarius, who was stepping toward them.

Zarius looked at the beasts before him, their golden eyes level with his chest. The creature was two meters wide, and easily eight feet from front to back, muscles rippling as it prepared to charge at the slightest sign of aggression. It had a sharp snout with four canine teeth as large as his fingers protruding from each side of its jaw, and its mouth was lined with razor-sharp teeth, as dark as night, except for its glowing golden eyes. He stood a few feet back, observing.

He tried to sense and communicate with them, but was unsuccessful. They growled and tilted their heads, seemingly studying him in return. Then, the larger one stepped forward and lunged, jumping into the air toward him. He dodged at the last moment, and the creature landed on the ground, sliding a short distance before stopping and immediately turning around.

The moment the first jumped, the second one ran at him. He turned toward it and grabbed its throat, teeth inches away from his face, growling and trying to bite, its claws slashing his hands, drawing blood. He grunted and hurled it toward its partner. They collided and stumbled to the ground.

Recovering, they exchanged a glance and circled him, searching for an opening. His eyes remained fixed on them.

Megal and the group stood there in stunned silence. Watching the three of them fighting, their eyes tracking every moment, the animals circled him. Suddenly, the larger one ran at him faster, far faster than they could track. In the blink of an eye, the shadow reached Zarius, but it flew sideways at the same speed, meeting Zarius’s blurring fist; they heard it howl. He ducked the second one’s attack from behind him, grabbed its hind leg, and slammed it into the ground.

“Oh my god”, a girl whispered. No one dared to utter a word.

Then they attacked him in a flurry of motion. Zarius felt claws on his abdomen and back, with blood seeping from them. At some point, he grew tired and felt teeth on his shoulder. He screamed as a beast closed its jaws on his shoulder, grabbing its throat. He slowly pried it off, blood spurting from the four points. He slammed it onto the ground with force that shook the stone pile behind them, then stepped away.

He stood there, watching them with curiosity, wondering what they were and why they attacked him. Feeling tired again and experiencing a surge of pain, he just wanted to end it and leave. His eyes fixed on the beasts; he raised his hand behind his back and tried to control the stones. Suddenly, the beasts lunged at him simultaneously. Gritting his teeth, he felt a burning sensation and threw two large rocks, each as big as their heads, at their snouts, hearing a crunch. The animals stumbled and fell to the ground, whining.

He moved toward them, his Node flaring, his eyes glowing. He raised his hand, and a ring of fire surrounded the animals. They stood and looked at the fire around them, closing in, standing together.

Then he felt a presence graze against his mind and stopped. He gazed into the creature’s eyes and felt a presence, trying to reach him; he reached it.

“Stop,” he heard a surprisingly feminine voice. He looked at the smaller one. The fire was now entirely out, and he stepped closer to it. The larger one stared at him and lowered itself slightly, almost kneeling, while the other followed suit.

“We yield”, he heard the male voice.

His exhaustion caught up with him, and he lay on the ground in front of them, blood seeping from his wounds. The two of them stood at his sides, looking down at him, then sat beside him.

The female licked his wound on the shoulder; he jerked at the sensation and hissed in pain. Surprisingly, the blood stopped, it whined, and he turned his back. It licked there too, and he then lay down, sighing.

After a long moment, he sat up groaning and then moved slowly toward the glow, the beasts following closely behind him. He began pushing the ruins; they helped him, but he didn’t say a word. After removing everything, he looked at the glow.

The glow came from a symbol carved on the stone floor. He knelt and looked closer. The emblem depicts endless paths crossing. Each curved back into itself, flowing without break, without beginning, without end. The motion felt continuous, as if the lines were never meant to stop moving. At the exact point where they met sat a small circle.

Perfectly closed. Perfectly still. The paths did not touch it. They bent around it, shaping their movement to its presence, as though the space it claimed could not be entered. Everything else flowed. That point did not flame like carving at the edge of every circle.

Zarius stared at the symbol, his Node flaring brightly, matching its crimson glow. The beasts near him stared at it. Then they turned toward him, using their snout they nudged his hand, urging him as if to touch it, he looked at them surprised but they nudged his hand, he saw that one of the symbol etched inside the circle looked like the beast, he eyes widened, he raised his hand to touch it, hand hovered over it hesitant, blood seeping from the claw slashes.

Megal and her group stood in silence, their wide eyes watching everything

“What is that glow?” whispered one

“Did you notice that?” another added. “It’s like the beasts surrendered to him, how?”

“What is happening there?”

But no one responded; they had no answers, and they watched as Zarius raised his hand to touch the glow.

“Is he going to touch it?” Canos asked. “Shouldn’t we tell the High priestess?” he added, looking at Megal and everyone else.

“No, you don’t”, they heard a voice behind them.

They froze at the sound of the voice and turned toward it.

“High ... high priestess,” one whispered, slightly bowing; everyone else followed suit.

The woman stood there, gazing at them with a serene expression, her blue eyes fixed on theirs. Silver, almost white hair cascaded around her, while her light blue dress flowed like a wave of light in the darkness. Behind her, the first priestess stood silently.

“You did well,” she praised them. “Now leave immediately; you are not welcome to see next,” she said, moving past them without a glance. The first priestess stayed with them.

“You heard her,” the first priestess said, “let’s go back.”

“What?” Megal hissed. “Leaving her alone with them?”

“Don’t worry, she won’t be harmed,” the priestess said, moving.

“Mother,” Megal screamed, “tell us what is happening?”

The priestess started with, “We should...” but suddenly, a scream tore through the night, accompanied by two combining howls. All of them turned around in shock.

The Mark

Zarius’s hand hovered over the symbol before slowly lowering it. A drop of blood fell onto the centre circle, causing it to glow brighter and align with his Node. The instant he touched the symbol, a jolt of pain surged through him from his wounds, making him scream to the sky; howls soon accompanied his screams.

The high priestess watched him scream as the glow entered his body and settled at his Node. Her own Node flared, causing a slight burn on her arm. She looked down in surprise, gasping as a symbol appeared on her skin, one she had seen for years, similar to those of a few others before her, but now it was permanently etched on her, marking her. She then turned her gaze to Zarius.

His body glowed with an intense light, his torn shirt revealing a symbol carved on his broad chest. The perfect arcs curved around his Node, emanating a bright crimson at its centre. Energy flowed toward the loop, creating an endless cycle around the Node. His glowing eyes burned as the energy completed a full loop and settled, causing everything to recede.

His screams and the animals’ howls faded away; the symbol burned once more before flickering out, becoming invisible to the naked eye. The high priestess gazed at her mark, which was gently fading, but she could still feel its presence, something she couldn’t erase.

Lija lay on her bed in her room at home, reflecting on what had happened at the cabin and the nightmare. Sleep was elusive, but eventually, she managed to fall asleep.

Then, the second time that night, her eyes snapped open as her Node flared. She sat up screaming, overwhelmed by shock and a burning pain that surged through her. Her senses tracked the source within her body, and her eyes fixed on the spot. She then removed her shorts, feeling a blush burn through her cheeks, but her eyes widened at what she saw.
