Present Day
For the next couple of weeks, Amy and Jason teased each other about how they learned about sex and their favorite lessons. Then Jason asked Janey Rukowski to come over on Friday evening. When Amy asked why, he said, “So we can go out on a date, of course.”
“Oooh! Nice! Anything special planned?”
Jason smiled. “Remember when we first met six years ago?”
Amy nodded, though she had a curious look on her face. “Sure. It was the spring, April or May, I think. So?”
“It was the last week in May, and I asked you out on a date that Friday, remember?”
She giggled. “I remember.”
“Do you remember our third date?”
Amy giggled even more.
Six Years Ago
Brad Whitlock walked into the lobby of Brenlee Associates followed by his assistant, Jason Beckers. He went to the reception desk and smiled. The receptionist smiled back and said, “Welcome to Brenlee Associates. How can we assist you?”
“Brad Whitlock, Cyber Security Partners, here to see Mike Johnson, with my associate.” Jason smiled at the beautiful receptionist. She was definitely his type – blonde and blue-eyed, buxom and voluptuous with a gorgeous face.
The young woman nodded and picked up the phone. She dialed a number and spoke for a few seconds before setting it back down. “Mister Johnson asked me to bring you up, so if you would follow me?”
“We are in your hands,” Brad said, smiling.
Meeting Amy
The receptionist smiled back, nodding to both men, and then led them to the elevators. Jason’s initial assessment of the young woman was reinforced when he saw her hips and legs. They were spectacular! She took them up four floors and down a hallway before knocking on a door. They entered an anteroom with a secretary who greeted them and took over. Two minutes later they were in an executive’s office, shaking hands.
“So, what can Cyber Security Partners do for Brenlee that we aren’t already doing inhouse?” asked Johnson.
“Well, we specialize in detecting and preventing cyber intrusions into your networks. Surely you are aware of the issues facing organizations like yours.” Brenlee Associates was a lobbying firm in Alexandria; they worked for a variety of automotive companies and specialized in lobbying the Democratic Party.
Jason interrupted, pulling out his cell phone and glancing at it. “Excuse me, Brad, Mister Johnson. I need to respond to this, and a text just won’t do it. Any chance I can excuse myself for a few minutes.”
“Fine by me,” answered his boss. Johnson simply nodded and Jason took his leave.
Jason left the office and went down to the lobby, where he found the beautiful young receptionist. “Hi. I need to get online for a bit. Mike said you could put me in an empty office for a few minutes.”
“Mister Johnson wants me to put you in an office for a few minutes? Okay. We have something down here. I can only let you have guest access, though.”
“That will be fine.”
The receptionist led him to a small office down a hallway and opened the door. She pointed him towards a desk and jotted down the guest login information before leaving. Jason smiled as she walked away; the view from behind was as good as the view from the front. Then he went to work.
A half-hour later, Jason left the office and went back upstairs. He found his boss and Mike Johnson still talking, though it seemed that Brad wasn’t getting anywhere with his sales pitch. He gave Brad a smile and a subtle nod before waiting for a response.
“I think we can continue to handle this issue in-house,” said Johnson.
Brad nodded but turned to Jason. “I asked my associate here to see if he could penetrate your system.”
Johnson snorted. “Impossible!”
“Jason?”
Jason nodded and turned to face Johnson. He had practiced this sort of sales technique with Brad several times. The results were often very unsettling. “Yes, I was able to discover a number of... disturbing items. First, I was able to log in to your system as a guest and found more than a few vulnerabilities, though none were terribly serious. However, I was able to initiate a phishing attack that has resulted in over a dozen responses, since they all seemed to indicate it was an internal request and not an external assault. At least two of those responses gave me unlimited access to your system, regardless of whether it was internal or external, and that gave me administrator level access. That gave me access to your email and text correspondence with three different automakers and parts suppliers; I would have found more information, but I was under time constraints. Finally, while not really a part of my specific assignment, I discovered a significant cache of pornography being stored on your servers.”
Johnson stared at the young man. He looked barely out of college but seemed self-assured as if he was ten years older. “You’re kidding! Who?”
Jason didn’t answer directly, simply stating, “I looked through enough to satisfy myself that it was fairly routine. Nothing illegal, so to speak.”
Brad cleared his throat and Johnson turned to face him. Brad said, “Let me just comment on that. We aren’t here to pass judgement. For instance, we won’t comment on anything we discover that is work related. However, if we discover anything blatantly illegal, we won’t be able to hide it. The only thing worse than breaking a non-disclosure agreement would be to not disclose child pornography, for instance.”
Johnson looked like he was about to throw up. He turned back to Jason, who shook his head. “That’s not a problem, at least as far as I saw. Still, we won’t lie when the Feds show up.”
“In any case, Mike, I think Cyber Security Partners can help you with your system security. Any chance we can work with you on that?” asked Brad.
Brenlee Associates was a client of Cyber Security Partners by lunchtime. The three men went out to lunch together. As they passed through the lobby, the receptionist smiled at them, and Jason winked at her. He was delighted to see her blush.
Wednesday morning Brad and Jason returned. Jason was sorry that the receptionist was different from the beautiful blonde he had flirted with the previous day. Then Mike Johnson made a phone call, and thirty seconds later there was a knock on his door. The blonde came in and he said, “Thank you, Amy. This is Brad Whitlock and Jason Beckers of Cyber Security Partners. They are going to be working with the IT department for a bit. I’m going to take them down to introduce them, but I’d like you to assist them.”
Amy nodded. “Yes, sir, of course. Uh, what am I supposed to do? I don’t know about that stuff.”
Brad and Jason smiled, and Mike laughed. “Don’t worry about that. I’ll explain it in IT. You just do what they ask.”
Brad chuckled and added. “That’s going to be things like finding us an empty office and stuff like that. Don’t sweat it, uh, Amy...?”
“Newhart, sir, Amy Newhart.”
“Thank you. Most of the time you’ll be working with Jason. We have a very efficient system in our company. We work the security experts like slaves and the managers keep all the money.”
Both Jason and Mike laughed at that, and then Mike led them to the elevators. The IT department had a small office on the second floor towards the back of the building. The manager of the department was waiting for them and looked nervous. The previous day he had been called into Johnson’s office and read the riot act. If one man with guest access could hack their entire system in half an hour, what could a team of dedicated intruders do? The IT manager was to provide total cooperation and support or clean out his desk.
That first day was mostly just preparation for Jason. Shortly after being introduced to the IT department, Brad took off, leaving Jason behind. He would be the team leader and bring in other experts as needed. The IT manager offered Jason a desk in the open bullpen environment of the IT area, but Jason demurred. He turned to Amy and said, “Any chance you can find me an empty office, maybe a small conference room?”
“Yes, sir. Of course, Mister Beckers.”
Jason smiled. “It’s Jason. Mister Beckers lives in Cleveland with Mrs. Beckers.”
Amy smiled. “Yes, sir.”
“And that’s the last ‘sir’, too.”
“Yes, sir!” she said grinning.
Jason shook his head and followed as Amy led him to a small conference room at the end of the hall. After setting his laptop case on the conference table, he said, “This will be fine. I’m going to have a few of my guys come in tomorrow to give me a hand, so don’t be surprised when the geeks descend on Brenlee.”
“Are you one of the geeks, too?” she asked.
He laughed. “Right down to my pocket protector and ugly black plastic glasses.”
“Very funny.” Amy noticed he had neither and in fact looked very much like a young executive. He obviously wasn’t a geek. She excused herself after giving Jason her extension in case he needed something.
Jason worked for a few hours, using his administrator level access to look throughout the system. Then he picked up the phone and called Amy. “Yes, Mister Beckers?”
“Jason,” he chided.
“Sorry. Yes, Jason?”
“It’s lunchtime. Have you eaten yet?”
“Uh, not really. Sometimes I go out with some of the girls, but otherwise I just have some yogurt or something.”
“Okay. Grab your jacket or whatever and we’ll go to lunch. I’ll meet you in the lobby. Thanks.”
The phone clicked and Amy blinked. Lunch? She grabbed her purse and scurried off to the lobby. Jason was waiting for her. “I was thinking something more than yogurt,” he told her.
“There’s a Subway down the street. Occasionally we order in subs,” she told him.
“Subs it is. We’ll do fancy Friday night.”
“Friday night?”
“Glad you agree,” he laughed.
“That was a question, not an agreement,” she protested.
Jason simply laughed and held the door open for her. She went out and he followed, eyeing her from behind. Amy had worn a white blouse and a short black skirt, along with three-inch heels, and she looked spectacular from behind; the front view had been equally enticing.
The sub shop was only a block away, on the first floor of another office building, so they simply walked there and ordered small Italian subs. “We normally just get a half hour for lunch...” she said, “ ... so most of the time we just order in.”
“I don’t worry about the clock, and you are my assistant, so neither do you,” he told her.
“Oh. Okay. Just what is it you are doing? Am I allowed to ask that?”
“Sure, you can ask. I might not answer, but you can always ask,” he replied with an easy smile. Amy gave him a dry look and Jason laughed. “No, what I am doing is not a secret. I can only tell my boss what the result is, but what I do is test your company’s computer security systems. That’s what we do, cybersecurity. First, we figure out what’s broken, then we fix it, if we can.”
Amy swallowed the bite she was chewing before asking, “If you can? You mean you might not be able to fix it?”
He nodded. “Sure. The biggest problem isn’t technical. People are the biggest problem.”
“What do you mean?”
Jason took another bite and after swallowing it, answered, “Take passwords, for instance. Do you have any idea how many people use ‘password’ for their password? It’s the default setting on half the software on the market. The same with system administrators; they’re no different. Most network systems use ‘admin’ or something similar as the network password, right out of the box. And even when you put in password requirements, how many people write their passwords on Post-It notes and stick them on their computer? Do I have to walk you around your office and check?”
Amy blushed and smiled. She already knew the answer to that question. “What else?”
“Almost everything can be hacked. If I send out a bogus email, how many people will respond? And I’m not talking about the Nigerian prince scam. I mean an email from the IT department or Amazon? What if I drop a few USB thumb drives in the parking lot? How many people will pick it up and figure they just got a free thumb drive? They put it in a computer, and I just got access to everything.”
“Wow! So, you test for these things and then try to fix it?”
“That’s a big chunk of it, but there are other things as well, some of which I can’t get into. Anyway, that’s what we do. I’m just working on some routine things today, but tomorrow I’ve got some techs coming in. We’ll set up a war room in the conference room and start going deeper.” Then he grinned at her. “You are going to be a real revelation to some of these guys.”
“Why?”
“Because some of these guys have only seen women on a computer screen. Seeing a beautiful woman in the same room might cause sweating and heart palpitations,” Jason laughed.
Amy rolled her eyes and smiled. “I think I’ll just wear some baggy clothes. That way we won’t be testing your health insurance.”
Lunch at the sub shop
Jason kept laughing at that, arguing that he had actually met a girl before, so she shouldn’t dress differently. The pair joked about geeks and nerds through lunch and then walked back to the office.
True to his word, Jason showed up the next morning with two additional computer security specialists, along with a minivan full of equipment. When she checked in on them later that morning, the conference room looked like the bridge of the Enterprise on one of the old Star Trek movies. She just shook her head in confusion.
For a couple of days, Jason kept up a low-key pursuit of the beautiful young secretary. He learned from her that while Brenlee Associates had a receptionist, she was out on maternity leave. They were making do by rotating in a few ‘administrative assistants’, a fancy name for secretaries. By Thursday he got her to agree to go to dinner with him on Friday evening.
Friday afternoon at five, Jason sent his team home for the weekend. Then he headed to the bathroom to clean up and get ready for his date. Amy had told him to wait in the lobby, and she would meet him there.
She went into the bathroom carrying a small bag. She came out wearing a pair of tight black slacks and a white top with a V-neck; the bag she handed to a friend to stash under her desk.
First date
Jason was sitting on a bench in the lobby when Amy returned. “That looks very nice,” Jason told her.
“Thank you,” she responded, with a smile. “Uh, Jason, about tonight...”
“You’re not going to break my heart and cancel, are you?”
“No, but I think I want to follow you over to the restaurant.”
Jason nodded. It wasn’t an unusual request for a first date. Sometimes it was to meet at an agreed upon restaurant or public location. It let a woman feel safer and more in control. It was one of the lessons that Janice MacDonald had taught him about women, when she wasn’t teaching him other things that women wanted. “That’s okay. I’ll pick you up for our second date.”
Amy smiled at that. “Confidence. Who was it that said pride goeth before the fall?”
“How about the Bible? It’s somewhere in there.” He waved towards the door and followed her out. He headed for the parking lot with Amy in tow. “Just follow me. There’s a nice little Italian place about fifteen minutes from here.”
“I’ll try not to lose you,” she laughed.
The nice little restaurant turned out to be just that, a small family-owned Italian restaurant that served a manicotti that had to be tasted to be believed, and a lasagna with a sauce that was both smooth and spicy. Jason ordered a bottle of Chianti Riserva, and they settled in for a nice dinner. “So, tell me all about Amy Newhart,” he said.
Amy shrugged and smiled. “I’m pretty normal, I think. I’m from East Bowie.”
“East Bowie?”
“In Maryland. It’s south of Baltimore and east of Washington. It’s pretty quiet,” she told him.
“Where did you go to college?”
“The University of Maryland, in College Park. It’s sort of a family tradition. My parents met there, and both my older brothers went to school there.”
“Two brothers? Are they going to show up to defend your honor and ask my intentions?” he joked.
“Doubtful. Tommy, he’s my oldest brother, he’s in San Antonio, and Joe ... he’s in between Tommy and me ... is in Boston. I’ll have to defend myself. Besides, you’re a guy. I pretty much know your intentions,” she said with a laugh.
“Okay, that’s fair. Still, how do I know what your intentions are? What if I have to defend my honor?” Jason asked.
Amy snorted and smiled. “Again, you’re a guy. When women are involved, guys don’t have any honor.”
“This is so painful,” Jason protested. “True, but painful.”
“So, where are you from and where did you go to school?” she asked.
“Cleveland. I left when I went to MIT for college. That’s where I got my bachelor’s and master’s in computer science. I graduated two years ago.”
“Is that where you learned about computer security?”
Jason laughed. “Not really. I learned about that back in Cleveland.” Amy gave him a curious look, and Jason continued. “I’ve always been good with math and computers. I mean, I was the kid who could always program the DVR and cable box when the lights on the front were flashing 12:00. It used to drive my parents crazy.”
She laughed. “My parents were so happy when they bought a clock that got the time from the Internet.”
“Precisely. Anyway, we had a computer at home, and I got online when I was thirteen and looking for porn.” He blushed at that when Amy laughed at him, but he shrugged and said, “What do you want? I was a teenager! Anyway, I got online and was goofing off and I got sidetracked by a friend looking to find out our grades at school. I already knew about the school computer system and found it online. So, I tried to get in and got into the system. I didn’t change anything, but I got into the school computer system and looked around. Then, the next day, I found the local police station and got onto their computers, but they were a little more prepared. At dinner that night, a couple of detectives showed up and grabbed me.”
“Oh, shit!” said Amy, who then looked around to see if anybody had heard her. “What happened?”
Jason smiled. “They put me through the local version of Scared Straight, you know, where they show you what jail is really like. Scared the living hell out of me, that’s for sure! I really didn’t want to do that for real, so I went straight. I also got to hang out with their cyber division, which was just getting started, and they asked me how I got into their system before getting caught. I ended up volunteering with them and learned even more.”
“What did your parents think about that?”
Jason rolled his eyes. “It was pretty tense for a while, like for a few years. I think if I was still living at home, I’d still be grounded.” He shrugged. “The cops told them how I was helping them, and they let me out of home jail by the time I was a junior in high school.”
“Oh my God! I’m going to dinner with a criminal! You’re a felon!” she laughed.
“More like a felon wannabe. Besides, there’s no records anymore. Not even a juvie file.”
“Well, I am definitely not introducing you to my family. I was raised to avoid evil.”
“Now I think you’re pushing it,” he told her.
“Pour me some more wine while I consider the proper prayer to cleanse my soul,” she laughed.
“Oh boy!” commented Jason.
When they finished dawdling over dinner, Jason walked Amy to her car, where he took her in his arms and kissed her. The young woman practically melted against him, and she could feel him stiff against her. That was as far as it went, but her body wanted more. When she got back to her apartment, she jilled herself furiously when she went to bed.
Saturday, Jason called Amy to thank her for a fun night out. They talked for about a half hour before breaking off. The following week was much like the previous week, with Jason and his team working in the conference room. He did tell her that they were working on a report that would go to the board of directors, but he couldn’t say what was going to happen. Friday, they would have another date, but this time he would pick her up at her apartment.
Jason got Amy’s address from her and showed up precisely on time, but when he knocked on the door, a brunette answered. She would have been pretty if it wasn’t for the surly sneer on her face. She left him standing in the hall while she closed the door in his face. A minute later Amy came out. “Sorry about that.”
“I assume that’s your roommate.”
“She’s just an absolute bitch lately,” replied Amy.
“Can’t you get her to be nicer?” Jason asked.
“Not really. We’ve got a lease and if I leave, it’s all on me. The lease is up in a few months and I’m moving out.”
“Well, forget about her for the night. Let’s go to dinner.”
