Friday night arrived. Brian left the training center and drove home as quickly as possible so that he could get changed and cleaned up. He had a date with Julie and couldn’t wait to see her again. For Julie, her day was simply fussing over clothing, hair, makeup while dealing with her period. She wished that date night didn’t align with this monthly challenge, but it did and there was nothing she could do about it.
She managed to pick out a simple wrap dress that showed off her figure without being too sexy. Brian put on his favorite black jeans and a polo shirt.
When he arrived at her apartment door, he was sweating bullets but couldn’t understand why. He had known Julie literally his whole life, so why was he nervous? He couldn’t understand it but that didn’t deter him from moving forward toward his destiny.
Julie was feeling the same thing. Brian was a great guy, kind, caring and if Veronica was to be believed, going to be a good provider once he got done with training. She looked at her makeup, her hair, her dress several times while she waited for the knock.
Brian is here and he is just as nervous as you are. Julie’s WE told her.
There was a crisp knock at the door. Julie moved to answer, pausing just long enough to smooth her dress one more time before pulling it open.
“Hi,” she said softly, her nerves melting away the moment her eyes met his.
“Hey, Julie,” Brian replied, the sight of her somehow calming the jitters in his own chest.
For a long breath, they simply stood there—two people who had known each other forever, yet suddenly felt like strangers at the edge of something new. Neither spoke. Neither moved. The air between them hummed with quiet anticipation.
It’s okay, Brian—make the first move, his WE nudged gently, the same message whispered into her mind as well.
Brian stepped forward, meaning to take her hand, but without thinking, his arms opened instead. Julie didn’t hesitate—she stepped into him, slipping her arms around his neck as he folded her into his embrace.
They held each other there, the nervous energy giving way to something calmer, steadier. Two hearts slowing, two minds quietly rejoicing in the simple magic of being held.
While they hugged each other, now calm and collected, Brian spoke quietly as he held her. “Pizza? Then maybe a walk or we can go to the art gallery and pretend to be Farris Beuller.”
Julie laughed and slipped back to her feet, “I would love that.”
“Then let’s go.” Brian said, holding his hand out to her. She reached for it, interlaced her fingers with his and walked out to his old Camry for the date to start.
The pizza shop wasn’t famous, but it was nearby and familiar to both of them. They sat and opened their menu. The waitress came over with water for them and asked if they wanted anything to drink.
Brian hesitated and deferred to Julie to order first. “I’ll have a coke please.”
“Me too, please.” Brian said, then set his menu aside and focused his attention on Julie. “Want to share a pizza?”
“Sure do. How about one of those deep dish pizzas with all of the cheese inside?” Julie said, all bubbly and happy.
“Of course, what else would we eat?” Brian laughed.
When their cokes arrived at the table, Brian spoke up for them. “We are going to share one of you meat lovers deep dish pies, please.”
“Perfect. Be right back with that.” The waitress said, smiling at the couple sensing that this was their first date.
Brian reached across the table, his hands open toward her, an invitation to hold hands. Julie accepted right away and gazed into his eyes.
“Tell me again, why did you come over and ask me out?” Brian asked, looking for something to talk about.
“I was at work, and one of the other dancers asked me why I was working at the club and not in college. Well, one thing led to another and I confessed that I wanted to get married and have a family. I asked the dancer if her pack had space for one more, it didn’t by the way, but she asked me if I knew anyone I grew up with that could be my husband. Your name came to mind right away. She said I had to go and talk to you right away, so I did. And here we are.”
“Can I tell you something?”
Julie nodded, all of her attention on him.
“I’ve been in love with you for a long time.”
“Oh Brian, why didn’t you tell me? We could have done this years ago.”
“I know, but I was nervous, unsure of myself and how I would fit into your life. You were so popular back in school. I didn’t know if you would give a nerd like me the time of day.”
Julie tightened her grip on his fingers, not letting him pull away. “It doesn’t matter now. That was the past and we have only the future ahead of us.”
“Ok.”
“Now tell me about your training classes. Let’s forget what has been. I don’t want to go down that path. Too many memories and too much pain.” she admitted, taking a hand back and dabbing at a tear that was threatening to form in the corner of her eye.
Brian didn’t understand the tear, but went ahead and started talking all about the plumbing business he was learning about. Julie listened to him go on and on, but the more she listened, the more she was intrigued by it all. She had no idea that so much went into getting water to the faucet at home.
“What do you do if something breaks in the wall?” she asked at one point.
“Repair it which sometimes could include taking the wall apart just to get to the pipe or pipes.” Brian admitted.
Their pizza was the only thing that got them to pause their conversation and they dug in, both smiling and hungry.
