Summer 1483 - Hyeon’s eighteenth birthday
The day arrived with all the ceremony befitting a prince’s coming of age.
Hyeon woke before dawn, underwent ritual washing and dressing in formal robes more elaborate than anything he’d worn before. Court officials assembled. Family gathered. The King himself presided over the ceremony that would officially recognize his third son as a man, capable of managing his own household and making his own decisions.
Jiwon watched from the servants’ area, her heart pounding.
Today. It would happen today.
The ceremony was long and tedious—ritual phrases, formal bows, presentation of symbolic items representing manhood and responsibility. Hyeon endured it all with patient dignity, though Jiwon could see the tension in his shoulders, the tightness around his eyes.
He was nervous. For all his planning, all his certainty, he was still nervous about what would come next.
Finally, the official ceremony concluded. But instead of dismissing the assembly, Hyeon remained kneeling before his father.
“Your Majesty,” he said, his voice carrying through the hall. “I request permission to address a personal matter.”
King Seongjong looked mildly surprised. “Proceed.”
Hyeon bowed low. “Now that I have reached manhood and am permitted to manage my own household, I wish to petition Your Majesty for approval to take a consort.”
Murmurs rippled through the assembly. This was expected—eighteen was an appropriate age for a prince to consider marriage. But the timing, immediately after the ceremony, suggested urgency.
“A consort,” the King repeated. “Have you someone in mind?”
“Yes, Your Majesty. Park Jiwon, who has served in my household since childhood. I request permission to elevate her to the position of consort.”
The murmurs grew louder. A servant? Not a noble lady, not a political alliance, but a servant?
Jiwon felt dozens of eyes turn toward her. She kept her face carefully neutral, her posture perfect, even as her heart threatened to beat out of her chest.
The King frowned. “Park Jiwon. She is ... Nain in your household?”
“Yes, Your Majesty. She has served me for thirteen years with exceptional skill and loyalty.”
“A servant.” The King’s tone was neutral, giving away nothing of his thoughts. “You wish to elevate a servant to consort.”
“I wish to honor someone who has proven herself invaluable, Your Majesty. Her calligraphy is exceptional—she has served my sisters as well as myself. Her intelligence and discretion are unmatched. And...” He paused, then continued firmly, “And I hold deep affection for her, Your Majesty. I cannot imagine choosing anyone else.”
Silence fell over the assembly.
The King studied his son for a long moment. Then his gaze shifted to Jiwon, assessing her with the weight of royal authority.
She bowed low, holding the position, barely breathing.
“Stand, girl,” the King commanded.
She rose, keeping her eyes lowered.
“You are the one my daughters speak so highly of?”
“I ... I am honored to serve the princesses, Your Majesty.”
“Mm.” He looked back at Hyeon. “You understand that as third prince, there is no political necessity for your marriage. You have freedom in this choice that your brothers do not.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“And you choose to use that freedom on a servant girl, rather than forming a useful alliance with a noble family?”
