Spring 1483 - Three months before Hyeon’s eighteenth birthday
The princesses knew something had changed.
Jiwon arrived to help Princess Myeonghye with correspondence one morning and found all three sisters waiting—Myeonghye, Sukhye, and Jeongmyeong—their expressions ranging from curious to amused.
“Sit,” Myeonghye commanded.
Jiwon sat, suddenly nervous. “Your Highnesses, if I’ve done something wrong—”
“You look different,” Sukhye interrupted, studying her with sharp eyes. “Happier. Almost ... glowing.”
“Did something happen with our brother?” Jeongmyeong asked, her voice gentle but knowing.
Jiwon’s face heated. “I ... Your Highnesses, I don’t know what you mean—”
“Oh, stop.” Myeonghye waved a hand dismissively. “We’re not blind. And we’re not about to scold you. We simply want to know if our suspicions are correct.”
“What suspicions, Your Highness?”
“That Hyeon has finally declared his intentions,” Sukhye said. “That he’s planning to make you his consort when he turns eighteen.”
There was no point in denying it. These women had protected her, facilitated her relationship with Hyeon, supported them both for years. They deserved honesty.
“Yes, Your Highness. He ... he told me he loves me. And that he intends to petition His Majesty for permission to make me his consort.”
The three princesses exchanged glances, then smiled.
“Finally,” Myeonghye said. “We were beginning to wonder if he’d ever work up the courage.”
“He’s been lovesick for years,” Sukhye added. “It was getting painful to watch.”
“So have you,” Jeongmyeong said to Jiwon, not unkindly. “You’re both terribly obvious.”
Jiwon didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “You all knew?”
“Of course we knew,” Myeonghye said. “We’ve been watching you two dance around each other since you were children. It was only a matter of time.”
“And you ... you approve?” Jiwon asked tentatively.
“Approve?” Sukhye laughed. “We’ve been actively helping! Who do you think convinced the household administrator to let you stay in his service after you became Nain?”
“And who reassigned your sister so you could see her more often?” Jeongmyeong added.
“And who has been creating opportunities for you two to have private moments?” Myeonghye finished. “We’re not subtle, child. We’re strategic.”
Jiwon stared at them, overwhelmed. “Why? Why help us?”
“Because we love our brother,” Myeonghye said simply. “And he loves you. And watching him be happy—truly happy—is worth more than any political alliance his marriage might bring.”
“He’s the third prince,” Sukhye added. “His marriage doesn’t matter politically the way the Crown Prince’s does. He has the luxury of choosing for himself. Why shouldn’t he choose someone who makes him genuinely happy?”
“And you do make him happy,” Jeongmyeong said softly. “We’ve watched him transform from a lonely, isolated boy into someone confident and joyful. That’s because of you.”
Tears pricked Jiwon’s eyes again. “I don’t know what to say, Your Highnesses.”
“Don’t say anything,” Myeonghye said briskly. “Just understand that when Hyeon petitions Father, we’ll be supporting him. All three of us. We’ll make sure Father understands that this is what Hyeon truly wants, and that you’re a worthy choice.”
“We’ll also make sure the court ladies don’t make your life miserable afterward,” Sukhye added. “There will be jealousy and gossip, but we’ll manage it.”
“You won’t be alone in this,” Jeongmyeong promised. “You’ll have us.”
Jiwon bowed low, unable to speak past the lump in her throat. These women—these royal princesses—were offering her not just protection but genuine support. Family.
“Thank you,” she finally managed. “Your Highnesses are ... you’re more generous than I deserve.”
“Nonsense,” Myeonghye said. “You’ve earned this. Your intelligence, your loyalty, your discretion—you’ve proven yourself valuable to this family beyond just making our brother happy.”
“Though making him happy is certainly a significant contribution,” Sukhye teased.
They all laughed, and Jiwon felt something warm and solid settle in her chest. She wasn’t just Hyeon’s beloved—she was becoming part of his family’s protective circle.
The Siblings’ Bond
Over the following weeks, Jiwon witnessed firsthand the genuine love between Hyeon and his sisters.
It wasn’t transactional. They didn’t protect his romance with Jiwon in exchange for favors. They simply cared about each other in a way that was rare in the palace, where siblings often competed for favor and resources.
