The palace gates swallowed her whole.
Park Jiwon was five years old, small enough that the massive wooden doors seemed to scrape the sky itself, and she clutched the hand of the court lady who had collected her from her father that morning. The woman’s grip was firm but not unkind, pulling her forward through courtyard after courtyard, each one larger and more imposing than the last.
Her father had knelt before her at dawn, his official’s robes stiff and formal even in their small room. “You will be fed,” he had said, not meeting her eyes. “You will be clothed. You will be educated. This is an opportunity, Jiwon-ah. Do you understand?”
She had nodded, though she didn’t understand at all. She understood only that she was leaving, that her mother had wept silently in the corner, and that her baby sister Jisoo—only three years old—had watched with wide, uncomprehending eyes as Jiwon was led away.
Now the palace rose around her like a mountain range of tile roofs and painted beams, red pillars and stone pathways that seemed to lead everywhere and nowhere at once. Servants moved through the spaces like water, their movements practiced and silent, their eyes downcast. No one looked at her directly.
“You will serve in the household of Prince Yi Hyeon, third son of His Majesty,” the court lady said, her voice clipped and efficient. “You are fortunate. The prince is young, only seven years old. You will be trained as Saengaksi—a trainee in his service. If you are diligent, if you are obedient, if you learn quickly, you may advance.”
Jiwon’s legs ached from walking. Her new shoes—stiff, unfamiliar—rubbed blisters on her heels. But she didn’t cry. Something in the palace’s vast coldness told her that crying would be pointless here.
They entered the inner palace, the women’s quarters, and the world became both smaller and more complex. Hallways twisted like secrets. Doors slid open to reveal rooms within rooms. Voices murmured behind screens. Somewhere, someone laughed—a sound quickly muffled.
The court lady stopped before a low building with a sloping roof. “The Saengaksi quarters. You will sleep here with the other trainees. You will rise before dawn. You will study calligraphy, etiquette, service protocols. You will learn to be invisible until you are needed, and present when you are called. Do you understand?”
“Yes, Aunt,” Jiwon whispered, using the respectful term for an elder woman.
“Good.” The lady’s expression softened, just slightly. “You are not the first small girl to arrive here frightened. You will not be the last. Survive the first week. It gets easier.”
She slid the door open.
Inside, perhaps a dozen girls ranging from Jiwon’s age to early adolescence knelt on the floor, their backs straight, their hands folded. They all wore the same plain jeogori and chima—the jacket and skirt of palace servants. Their hair was pulled back severely. Their faces were carefully blank.
One instructor, an older woman with a face like carved stone, looked up. “Another one?”
“Park Jiwon. Five years old. Literate.”
The instructor’s eyebrows rose fractionally—the only sign of surprise. “Literate? Already?”
“Her father is a government official. He taught her.”
“Useful.” The instructor gestured. “Come here, child.”
