“Good afternoon, Mistress Rebecca! This is Johanna, your new slave for almost ten days!” Isabell’s quick reaction surprised me.
“Good afternoon, Mistress Rebecca! I’m glad to see you’re feeling somewhat better!” Submissively, I lowered my head slightly.
Rebecca seemed genuinely astonished. Then she beckoned us over and pointed to the chairs.
“Sit down and tell me everything. Apparently, I’m missing more memories than I thought!”
Isabell and I looked at each other uneasily. Then we sat down.
Rebecca looked me over carefully and then narrowed her eyes.
“Sorry, I still have a bit of a headache. Johanna, right?”
“Yes, Mistress!”
She seemed to be thinking hard. Then she shook her head slightly.
“Sorry, nothing! Tell me, how long have we known each other, and how did you become my slave?”
Was she acting? Rebecca had always been inscrutable to me.
I moistened my lips and began.
“My Rooms name is Kumiho. I’ve been in the apartment for just over a month and have already had my own show with you. A whole weekend!”
Her face reflected genuine astonishment.
“Last week, there was an accident in the AI room in which I was injured. You visited me in the hospital and fell. You hit your head.”
“In the AI room? But that’s not yet...” She fell silent. Once again, she narrowed her eyes.
“Kumiho ... Johanna ... Johanna Blauert?” She looked at me sharply.
“Yes, mistress, that’s my name. Do you remember?”
Once again, she shook her head slightly. Her headache must have been worse than she said.
“Not everything. But there is something. I have no memory of my accident at all. How did it happen?”
“Your heel broke and you fell!” Isabell blurted out.
Rebecca frowned. “My heel?” Then she seemed to remember something. She nodded slowly. “That’s right, there was something. But I can’t quite grasp it yet.”
My heart sank. Damn it. Recently, I had thought the heel was a great idea, but now she had a mental bridge. Stupid, stupid, Johanna!
Rebecca began to smile. “Thank you. Slowly, my memories seem to be coming back. It seems like not everything is missing anymore.” She frowned. “Shouldn’t you both be in the circle basement for training?”
“Mistress Diana has given us leave. Only until you are completely healthy again!” Once again, Isabell was quicker than me with the answer.
Rebecca reached for a glass. I was startled to notice that her grip seemed shaky and weak. She lifted the glass and it slipped out of her hand. She looked at us bitterly.
“Then I’m afraid your vacation will be longer.”
“We have to get out of here right now!” Isabell was in a complete panic.
I could understand her, but of course I still had my goal of freeing Nadine. To do that, I had to satisfy my clients. However, I would only consider aborting the mission if there was acute danger.
Rebecca had suffered neurological consequences from the accident. At the moment, it was unclear how permanent they were. She would be going to rehab next week.
She hadn’t immediately cried murder, so it wasn’t clear whether she remembered everything. But even if she didn’t, her memory could return later. And she had realized again that I had entered the Rooms under false pretenses, at least that’s what I thought I saw in her eyes.
We had chatted for about 30 minutes, but the tension in the room was almost palpable. At least Isabell had kept herself under control for so long. The breakdown came now, outside in the parking lot.
“Calm down, we’re not in danger yet. She didn’t accuse us or have us arrested. And please remember that I have the BKA behind me!”
“Screw the BKA! Rebecca and Diana will just make us disappear easily!”
“They won’t!” I grabbed her shoulders with both hands and looked her straight in the eyes. “Just trust me. We’re not alone, and I’m not defenseless. I know aikido, and I’m pretty good at it.”
Her eyes flashed with anger. “Anything else you’ve kept from me? What else?”
I could handle her anger. I could not handle her panic.
“I work for Russian intelligence!”
“Ha, ha. Very funny. I’m serious!”
“So am I!”
She stared at me, stunned. “You’re crazy!”
“Do you really want to know where the T-shirt I suddenly had in the hospital came from? It came from a break-in at Rebecca’s house the night before. I installed a keylogger and a router-switch on her network. From now on, everything she accesses there will be recorded and forwarded to the FSB!”
“FSB?”
“Ex-KGB. They handle organized crime and money laundering now!”
Isabell still stared in disbelief.
Exasperated, I let go of her arms, fumbled the mini cell phone out of my pocket, and held it up.
“I can call for help at any time!”
Now her eyes widened. “You mean that?”
I nodded wordlessly.
She began to sway as if she were about to collapse. I tried to hold her, but she knocked my hands away.
“No! Don’t touch me!”
Her face, which had been pale just a moment ago, turned red with anger.
“So it’s all a lie? Your sister, the BKA? You’re just a Russian spy?” She screamed so loudly across the parking lot that I flinched.
“Shh, no! It’s all true! I only did it all for my sister!”
“I don’t believe a word you say!” Angrily, she turned around and left me standing there.
That went really well.
“Bella!” I called after her. “You can’t run away now, you’re in this too. You knocked Rebecca down! But together we can get out of this!”
Her steps slowed, and finally she stopped. I hurried to her side, ignoring the pain in my groin again.
This was going to be a long conversation. Maybe we should find a bench somewhere.
“And now you want to carry on as if nothing happened? Hoping that Rebecca won’t remember that I tried to kill her?”
“In short: yes!”
We sat in the shade of two plane trees on a secluded bench in the park.
Once again, I told her the story of Nadine’s kidnapping and my futile search in Russia, but now I also mentioned the events after my return to Germany: how Holger had approached me and recruited me.
“You’re completely crazy!”
I probably was. Any normal woman would not even have started searching for her sister, knowing for certain that she was already dead. But I never had any doubt that she was still alive and waiting for me. It may sound corny, but something inexplicable had always connected us.
I wasn’t religious, didn’t believe in horoscopes or other nonsense, but in this respect I was convinced: I could feel my sister. I had felt her suffering, her despair, and to some extent her pain. Nightmares had haunted me and fueled my efforts. And then, all of a sudden, it stopped. So suddenly that for a while I assumed she was now dead.
But there was still something there. No more unspeakable pain, just sadness, then anger. I had disappointed her. That was the moment when I decided to search again and Holger approached me.
I didn’t answer Isabell, just looked her in the eyes.
“You’re just like Rebecca!”
“Excuse me?”
“You manipulate and stop at nothing to achieve your goals!” Isabell’s voice was full of bitterness.
“That’s not true at all!”
“Oh no? What about the people in the apartment wing? What about Ronja, Linda, Mimi, and the others? Have you thought about that?”
“Yes, I have. And I’m sorry, but my sister’s life is at stake. If it weren’t me, they would have found someone else.”
“That justifies everything, doesn’t it?”
“Not everything, no. But Rebecca runs a criminal organization, and you played a significant role in it. How many lives has Rebecca ruined?”
“The Rooms aren’t criminals!”
“The methods they use to keep things secret are! Tax evasion and money laundering aren’t legal either,” I reminded her.
Isabell wanted to say something, but then closed her mouth again.
I continued: “Listen, you can end this now: Call Diana, tell her everything, including that the Russian secret service now has access to the Rooms via Rebecca’s computer. Then she can pull the emergency brake, remove the access, and shut down the company in a controlled manner. Everyone can escape. Everyone except my sister.”
“You wouldn’t let that happen.”
“Come with me, we’re going into town!” I stood up. “There was an electronics store somewhere over there!”
Without looking back, I started walking. She would catch up with me. If not, I would have to try Plan B. I just didn’t have a Plan B yet.
Isabell caught up with me. We entered the small electronics store and I went to the computer section. There I chose a relatively inexpensive tablet. I also bought four new SD cards.
Isabell had followed me the whole time, confused. When we left the store, I went to a small restaurant and chose a table in a corner.
“What are we doing here?”
“Something to eat, what else? It’s my treat. Please choose something for us, I need to prepare something quickly.”
The waiter arrived with the menus. I ordered a fruit spritzer, Isabell a mineral water.
Luckily, the tablet’s battery was half full. I took the SD card out of my bag and inserted it into the slot. Then I opened the video.
When the waiter returned, Isabell, who was still confused, ordered two of the daily specials for us.
As soon as he was gone, Isabell put the headphones in and I started playing the video.
We didn’t have two and a half hours left, so I kept skipping ahead to the interesting parts.
Isabell’s face grew paler and paler. When the food arrived, I pressed pause. She barely touched it, but kept looking at me. I enjoyed my meal. Finally, she blurted it out.
“How can you eat so calmly now? You were right, Rebecca had you drugged and interrogated! What else is there?”
I chewed calmly. “So you still had doubts about me? Why should I show you the rest? You want to go to Diana and tell her everything. Then I can’t go back, we’ll have to break up! Decide whether you want to come with me or not!”
I looked at her intently. Of course, she had been thinking about doing that all along. But she should realize the obvious herself.
“Twenty!”
“Excuse me?”
“Twenty and the others! The ones who ended up in the basement because of blackmail. Will Diana just let them go?”
“Ah, that’s the question, isn’t it? And what happened to the others before them?” She understood. Satisfied, I put the next bite in my mouth.
“We have to get them out of there!” she said quietly.
I nodded, rather casually, not really taking her seriously.
“I mean it: we have to get them out of there and destroy the evidence Rebecca has against them!” she suddenly repeated so loudly and vehemently that it startled me.
Coughing, I gasped for air and pounded my chest, trying to dislodge the bite in my windpipe. When I finally managed it, I looked at her with teary eyes: “How do you imagine that?” My voice was a croak.
