“Thank you for confirming the story you told me under the influence of drugs through Isabell. So I assume that part is true. But now I inevitably ask myself, if you are Johanna Blauert and wanted by the mafia, why is the mafia looking for Laura Zamora?”
“Because I wasn’t stupid enough to give the mafia my real name?”
“Ah. A good explanation. But don’t you think they could have gotten your real name out of your sister? Or is she as tough as you are? Is that something that runs in your family? Your sister surely has your name and had her ID with her when she was kidnapped.”
“I only took my new name after she was kidnapped, when I realized how much danger I was really in.”
Rebecca looked a little puzzled. Then she pursed her lips and nodded. “Okay, that sounds plausible.”
“Fear?” I deliberately provoked her with this question, seizing the initiative again.
“Excuse me?”
“You said fear. You use fear to intimidate, to keep former employees from doing stupid things. It has to be conveyed in a credible way. But also in such a way that they don’t immediately run to the police and file a report. So it’s not fear of being hurt or killed by you, but fear of the police, right?”
Now I had her figured out. Before she could answer, I pressed on. “That’s why there’s total surveillance in every corner of the house: it’s blackmail! Drugs, tax evasion, what else? What do you have on them all?”
I thought I could detect a trace of admiration in Rebecca’s eyes.
But I couldn’t savor my triumph because Isabell interrupted me: “I don’t understand anything anymore: Who is Laura Zamora now? And what’s all this talk about blackmail?”
I looked at my sweetheart. “What does she have on you? What does Rebecca know about you?”
She pouted. “My mistress knows everything about me, of course. Why shouldn’t she?”
“And is there anything the police or the tax office shouldn’t know about?”
Slowly, she seemed to understand. She looked at Rebecca, half indignant. “That’s complete nonsense, isn’t it? I’ve been around for so long, I would have noticed if you were blackmailing someone...” She fell silent. Obviously, something occurred to her. Horrified, she looked first at me, then at Rebecca.
I recognized her pain, but I wanted to know.
“Who?”
Tears welled up in her eyes: “The girls in the cells!”
“Who?”
She suddenly seemed disgusted with herself. “All of them!”
Before I could stop her, she jumped up and stormed toward Rebecca, shouting, “You turned me into a monster!” Rebecca was too surprised to react in time. Isabell grabbed the glas water bottle and struck Rebecca.
Rebecca just managed to soften the blow with a defensive hand movement, but she still fell to the ground almost instantly. I saw a gaping wound on her head.
Isabell raised the bottle to strike again.
“Bella!” I shouted. “Don’t!”
She paused and looked at me in astonishment. Then her gaze fell on the bloody bottle in her hand and on Rebecca, lying motionless on the floor. As if awakening from a nightmare, she recoiled and dropped the bottle.
No, no, no! Damn it! I scrambled out of bed, ignoring all the pain, and knelt down next to the unconscious woman. She was breathing. Weakly, but alive. I looked around frantically. Isabell stood pale and motionless next to me. My gaze fell on Rebecca’s Manolos. Hm, that’s what I call poetic justice.
The nurse was there within two minutes of me pressing the call button. After a brief moment of shock, he reacted calmly and professionally. Four minutes later, Rebecca was on her way to neurosurgery. Later, someone from administration came and questioned Isabell and me.
“She just twisted her ankle!” I held up the heel of her left shoe. “Then she hit the table and passed out.”
The employee looked at the bloodstain on the table. Then he took the heel.
“I have to take it with me as evidence for the insurance company!”
“Of course!” I replied.
“And you, can you confirm all this?” He turned to Isabell, who hadn’t said a word since the incident.
She didn’t seem to hear him.
“Listen, my girlfriend is in shock. How about calling Dr. Meier? He’s a mutual acquaintance and should take a look at her, if that’s possible?”
“I’m not sure...” he began.
“Shock, doctor, hospital? Hello? Will you call him or should I sound the alarm again?”
To be fair, I should mention that I was standing in front of him half naked. My bandages had come loose, as if by chance, shortly before the nurse had come in, and had not been replaced since. And, of course, I hadn’t found time to put on my jogging suit in the last two hours. Although, to be honest, I preferred to stay as I was rather than put that awful thing on again. But of course, there were practical reasons why I was showing myself off. Anyone staring at me probably didn’t notice any inconsistencies in the story. At the moment, it wasn’t clear how Rebecca was doing and whether she would suffer any lasting damage. I knew nothing. Except that my lover had just tried to kill her.
“Um, you still have to sign the accident report!” he tried weakly to object. But I remained adamant.
“There’s time for that tomorrow. Now call the doctor, or do you want someone else to collapse and hurt themselves?” I took the papers from his hand. “Come on!”
As if I had kicked him in the butt, he left the room.
Hopefully, the doctor was on duty and available. A little luck couldn’t hurt right now. We needed an ally.
Isabell was really in shock. But the last thing I wanted to do now was to have her taken to the emergency room as well. As soon as I noticed her condition, I had laid her on the free bed, put her meters up, and covered her with a blanket. If my medical knowledge was correct, that should suffice for the time being.
Now I sat down next to Isabell again and brushed her wet hair from her forehead. She felt cold and was shivering.
“Hey, Bella, everything will be fine, can you hear me?” I kissed her on the forehead.
As luck would have it, shortly afterwards there was a knock at the door and Reiner entered the room. He immediately saw Isabell’s condition and rushed to her bedside.
“What happened? Why is she lying here in bed?”
“She tried to kill Rebecca and knocked her down, now she’s in shock!”
He looked at me in surprise. “What? Why?”
“Because Rebecca admitted that she had been systematically blackmailing everyone in the apartment wing for years and had also used Isabell for this purpose.”
For a moment, I feared we would have a second shock patient, but he quickly recovered.
He took Isabell’s pulse, felt her forehead, and checked her breathing. Everything I had already done myself in the past hour.
“She needs to go to the emergency room!” he declared and reached for the call button. I stopped him.
“Not if Rebecca dies! Then she has to get out of here!”
He looked at me in astonishment. “How bad is it?”
I shrugged. “I was hoping you could tell us.”
“You’re crazy!” He reached for the call button again, and again I stopped him.
“Think about it. If Rebecca dies and Isabell is questioned about why she did it, what will happen? What will the officers find on Rebecca’s computer?”
“So you want me to let Isabell die too?” he asked, horrified and visibly disgusted.
“Are you crazy? I love her! Treat her here! Make sure she gets better. And then try to find out how Rebecca is doing. After that, we’ll see if we need to flee.”
He still hesitated.
Sighing, I thought, why is everyone always so slow on the uptake?
“I’m not reporting you for violating medical confidentiality either! After all, during my first stay, I didn’t give you permission to tell Rebecca anything about my health. And by the way, I’d like to see the results of my drug test.”
“Why?”
“Because Rebecca gave me a truth drug on the first day and questioned me about whether I worked for the police. And she got it from you!”
His face turned red with anger. “That’s a damn lie. I would never have gone along with that!”
I nodded. “Well, then I can confirm that I heard from Rebecca that you wouldn’t have agreed to it if you had known about it.”
He pulled his hand away.
“Who are you?”
My face took on a threatening expression: “That depends: either your ‘get out of jail free card’ or your worst nightmare! Now make sure you get Isabell healthy and then find out what happened to Rebecca, otherwise I can’t and won’t help you anymore!”
At least now he was acting decisively and competently. I didn’t know how he managed it secretly, but he quickly obtained everything necessary to treat Isabell. And soon she was feeling much better.
Then he promised to find out about Rebecca’s condition and left us. After all, he still had his regular duties to attend to. I felt a little sorry for him, but I didn’t know yet what Rebecca had on him. It was possible that he had a much darker secret than the others in the apartment wing.
To be reachable, I put the phone card back in the phone.
“So you do have a phone card after all?” Isabell looked at me with glassy eyes.
“Of course! How else am I supposed to make a call? We have to find out what’s going on with Rebecca.”
“I heard everything! You blackmailed him. Who are you?”
I rushed over to her immediately. “The woman who loves you, my darling!” I kissed her forehead again.
“And who is that? Laura or Johanna?”
I froze. Damn it!
Sighing, I sat down on my bed opposite her.
“Laura and Johanna.”
She looked at me silently, waiting for an explanation.
“I was Laura Zamora. Now my name is Johanna Blauert.”
“What? I saw your ID. Where can you get fake documents like that?”
“My papers aren’t fake, they’re real!”
She sat up carefully. “How?”
“Witness protection program. BKA.”
She thought for a moment. “Are you an informant?”
I nodded.
“Did they send you here?”
“No, they didn’t.”
She tilted her head. “Why, Johanna?”
