“I’m fine!” I whispered. I didn’t want anyone around me now, at least not a thousand people standing and kneeling around me. I just wanted peace and quiet and someone to lean on, but that wasn’t possible here.

“Kumiho, how are you?”

Leave me alone! I didn’t want to talk.

“Make some room and get out of here!” A male voice. The doc.

“Hey, Johanna, can you hear me?”

Johanna? Was I Johanna? Or Laura? Or Kumiho? Or Eighteen? Leave me alone on my cloud, here I was myself.

“She’s coming to the clinic!”

“No. Not the clinic!” I muttered. I just wanted to lie here. Curled up, left alone. I laboriously pushed the doc away.

Shortly after, I felt a prick in my upper arm.

“Everything will be fine, Johanna! Everything will be fine!”

Everything was fine, what did he mean?

Then everything went black.

Waking up in a hospital bed was slowly becoming routine for me. What was new, however, was that the doctor was asleep in the chair next to me.

Reiner Meier. My doctor with two faces. Friendly here, dismissive and cold in the basement.

He was unshaven and snoring a little with his mouth open. A sight that women always like to see when they wake up. Some, at least, but not me.

I moved a little and immediately felt a sharp pain in my lower abdomen that radiated throughout my entire stomach. Damn it, what was that? I threw back the covers and looked at my lower abdomen. A rubber tube came out of my taped-up slit and led to a drainage bag. They had put me on a permanent catheter. Why on earth? I already considered the obligatory gauze mummification to be normal hospital clothing for me.

The creaking of the bed springs must have woken the doc, because his snoring stopped abruptly and he looked over at me wearily. He sat up tensely in his armchair and wiped his mouth with his hand to remove some saliva.

“Hello Johanna, how are you?”

“Refreshed, as always when I wake up here. How many days is it this time?” My voice sounded rough and hoarse.

He looked at me blankly.

“Oh, never mind. What time is it?”

He looked at his wristwatch. “A little after 11. It’ll be noon soon. Are you thirsty?”

I nodded. “Is this a new service: wake-up care by the chief physician and beverage service, or is it only for regular customers?”

He just shook his head and went to the table where the bottles and glasses were.

“Still, medium, or sparkling?”

“Medium, please!”

“Here you go!” He handed me the full glass.

I drank and soothed my sore throat.

“So, will you tell me why you slept here? Or were you planning to propose to me as soon as I woke up? If so, I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you—my heart already belongs to someone else!”

He twisted his mouth into a crooked smile, but his eyes didn’t follow suit.

“Do you remember what happened last night?”

“My torture session? Let’s see, I was whipped, clamped, and electrocuted. Is that what you mean?”

Reiner nodded.

“In summary, yes. You seem to remember. But do you also remember what happened at the end, I mean right at the end?”

“The Dalek pulled on the clamps on my labia and I shouted the code word to turn him off. And then I was freed, yes!”

“You suffered shock from the pain at the end and collapsed!”

“No, I didn’t collapse. I had a mega orgasm at the end,” I blurted out.

He stared at me in amazement.

“What? Surprised that a woman talks about it so openly? I’m a sex worker, remember?”

“No, more surprised at how shock can change perception. The Dalek tore her labia!”

I stared at him for minutes, trying to comprehend what he had just said.

“How bad is it?” I finally managed to say.

“Well, bad enough that she’ll have to stay here for three days to recover and refrain from sex for the next two weeks. But it will heal without any lasting effects.”

My tension eased. I hadn’t even noticed how tense I had become.

“So no lasting damage?”

He shook his head.

“Not this time. But if the Dalek had pulled on her clitoris instead of her labia clamps, well then...”

He didn’t finish the sentence.

“Are we alone here?”

He looked around pointedly.

“Do you see anyone else here?” he asked with a smile.

“I mean cameras and audio surveillance?”

“Nothing like that. There are only cameras in intensive care, why?”

I lowered my voice: “Your cell phone, did you get it from Rebecca or the Rooms, or have you ever let it out of your sight?”

His smile widened.

“Do you think we’re being monitored and bugged? I can assure you that’s not the case.”

I waved him over impatiently. Hesitantly, he came closer and leaned toward me. I whispered in his ear: “If you ever let her hand over her cell phone, we are being bugged, I can assure you! Bring her cell phone out, please!”

My voice was a barely audible whisper.

He leaned back and fished his cell phone out of his pocket. He looked at it thoughtfully.

I raised my eyebrows and nodded.

Sighing, he turned and left the hospital room. It was a two-bed room, but I was lying there alone. There was a telephone next to me. I looked for the instructions. Damn, I obviously needed a phone card. The door opened and Reiner came back in.

“So,” he began, “what do you need to tell me that Rebecca or others aren’t allowed to hear?”

“What is Rebecca blackmailing you with?”

He smiled awkwardly. “What makes you think I’m being blackmailed?”

I tilted my head.

He became nervous. As a poker player, he would have lost now.

“Listen, Johanna, maybe you really should look for another job. Not in the basement anymore!” he evaded.

“Can you get me a phone card and keep it from Rebecca if she asks? Don’t put it on my bill either. Of course, I’ll pay you back at the next opportunity.”

Obviously relieved by this simple request, he waved it off. “It’s a gift. Sure, I’ll get you one. I’ll pick it up for you right after lunch.”

“The hospital isn’t part of the Rooms, is it?” I asked to be sure.

Now he had to laugh. “No, fortunately not. It’s a private clinic, but it belongs to a large corporation.”

“Is Morosov a shareholder?”

Now he tilted his head. “What do you mean?”

I decided to speak openly. “Reiner, you seem like a nice person. You don’t work at the Rooms out of conviction, or are you even a close friend of Rebecca’s?”

“How did you...?” he began to interrupt me, but I waved him off.

“If you trust me, I might be able to help you. But if Morosov has a stake in the clinic, you’d better find another job if you want to break up with Rebecca.”

“Who are you?”

I looked at him completely neutrally.

“Listen, I didn’t sleep much last night and I’m on duty later. I’ll get you the card and then we’ll both forget this conversation, okay?” He seemed almost panicked.

I shrugged. “You know where to find me if you feel like having a nice chat.”

He left the room in a hurry.

I sank back into my pillow. Had I said too much? Was that a mistake? If I could get him on my side, he would be an important ally. But of course, I first had to find out what Rebecca had on him. He definitely wouldn’t tell me himself; it was probably too explosive for that. But if I gave my friends access to Rebecca’s computer, she would have him in her power too, if his secret was to be found there.

The door opened again. Rebecca strutted in. I had actually expected her to arrive earlier.

“Hello, Johanna!” She nodded to me and sat down on the chair where Reiner had been sleeping 45 minutes earlier.

“Rebecca!” I greeted her curtly.

She raised an eyebrow.

I rolled my eyes: “Seriously? Good afternoon, Mistress Rebecca. I’m sorry I didn’t throw myself on the floor as soon as you came in! But as you can see,” I raised my arm with the IV attached to it, “I’m a little indisposed! Eighteen is really inconsolable.” My voice was dripping with sarcasm.

She didn’t reveal what was going through her mind. But then she nodded.

“Well, let’s leave it at that. I think your reaction is understandable and justified.”

“Oh, really?”

She raised an eyebrow again.

“It’s okay, I’ll be quiet. I was just expecting flowers and a get-well card.”

“Did Dr. Meier tell you?”

Now I raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t my health covered by doctor-patient confidentiality?”

For a brief moment, anger flashed across her face, then she regained control of her expression. Interesting.

“You didn’t read the slave contract carefully enough. In it, you gave me power of attorney to obtain information about your health from your doctors.”

“In my lease too? Or before that?” I know I should really keep my mouth shut sometimes, but just thinking about Rebecca was enough to send my blood pressure skyrocketing. And all I really wanted was to get away from her. Preferably right now.

“Best regards from Isabell!”

Damn it!

“She’s very worried about you. She saw everything from the bar. The others had a hard time holding her back!”

“Why was she there?”

“Because she has my trust. Well, at least in some things. And when it comes to your safety, definitely. Do you want to know what the others had to hold her back from?”

My expression must have been one big question mark.

“Killing Edward!” she answered the question. “It was him. How did you find out?”

Thoughts raced through my head. Figured it out? My last words to Diana came back to me. Yes, how exactly?

“I don’t know exactly, it was just a hunch.”

She looked at me thoughtfully.

“An absolutely accurate hunch. And thanks to your tip, we were able to catch him in the act. With Isabelle’s help.”

It took a few seconds for me to realize what she had just revealed to me.

“I was a decoy?” My voice boomed with anger.

Annoyed, she raised her hand. “You have no idea what this was all about. So tone it down!”

I was speechless. What was at stake? My life, of course! I was too angry to respond immediately, but my face must have turned red, because Rebecca immediately raised her hands in appeasement.

“We had everything under control. When you shouted ‘Red,’ we had already pressed the stop button! Four minutes later, Edward was lying on the floor, overpowered by security. It would have been over in 30 seconds if they hadn’t had to pull Isabell off him first.”

I thought about it silently for a moment.

“What’s going to happen to him now?”

Rebecca tilted her head. “Unpleasant things. Very unpleasant things!”
