Kazuki saw Taka step out of his tent and walk towards the hut accompanied by his escort. He immediately climbed off the carriage and ran to the tent.

There he found Teiko lying on the floor. She was only half-dressed and not moving.

Taka’s voice sounded from outside: “Korean, come out! You can’t escape! I’ll grant you a quick and honorable death!”

That wasn’t meant for him. Kazuki just shook his head. Things really weren’t going according to plan. Determined, he crouched down next to Teiko and checked whether she was still alive.

She was breathing, albeit very weakly.

He did not recognize any external injuries.

“What have you done?” he asked quietly and reproachfully, knowing full well that she could neither hear him nor answer.

He carefully covered her before lifting her up and stepping out of the tent with her.

From the direction of the hut, there were sudden shouts and the clang of weapons.

Kazuki only glanced there briefly, but used the distraction to walk unnoticed with the miko to his car.

Whatever was going on in the hut was no longer his concern.

“Come on, harness the horses!” he ordered his servants when he arrived at the carriage. “And hurry up!”

Taka let his two companions enter the hut first. A wise decision, as it immediately turned out.

Within moments they were both dead.

Taka immediately drew his sword.

“Alarm, men to me! The prisoner is free, surround the hut!” he ordered loudly.

Then he thought about what he should do.

When he saw the first arquebusiers light their fuses, he made a decision.

“No, nobody kills the prisoner except me! You just make sure he can’t escape. And 10 men back to the outer fortifications! Make sure no one can get into the camp!”

He peered cautiously through the open door into the dark hut. The bodies of his two men were still lying where the Korean had broken their necks when he jumped from above.

And he had seized their swords.

He really was an outstanding fighter. Undoubtedly worthy of dying in a duel.

But Taka needed his blood. If he injured him so badly that he bled to death, there might not be enough left.

Yes, there were injuries that could kill you without much blood loss. But that was difficult with a sword.

“Koreans, come out! You can’t escape! I’ll grant you a quick and honorable death!”

He realized too late that the man didn’t speak Japanese. And the interpreter was undoubtedly already dead. Taka cursed inwardly.

He pointed to two more warriors.

“You two drive him out. Don’t kill him, just make sure he leaves the hut! But watch out: He’s a good swordsman!”

The two people nodded. They quickly ran to the hut and positioned themselves to the left and right of the entrance.

Then they quickly peeked in, pulled their heads back again, nodded to each other, and ran into the hut one after the other, swords outstretched.

It only took a few moments before the clanging of weapons could be heard. Shortly afterwards, cries of pain, then silence.

Suddenly, a figure appeared in the doorway. It was one of the two samurai. He was holding his stomach with one hand while blood gushed from his mouth. He staggered out of the door and then fell down for a long time. At a sign from Taka, two more men rushed to him and pulled him away from the door.

When Taka approached him, the man was already dead.

His men stared at him in horror.

Taka remained outwardly unmoved, but inwardly he was also shocked. These two had been his best remaining swordsmen.

He thought about how he could persuade the Korean to leave the hut. The most obvious means, fire, was out of the question. The burning hut would generate so much heat that they would all be forced to retreat outside the fortifications of the camp. But he had to act immediately if he did not want to lose face in front of his men.

At that moment, he heard the challenge:

“Hey, you rats, are you looking for me? I am Kumiho Yun, the Firebringer, sister of Na-Ri, whom you beheaded, and I demand revenge! Which of you is man enough to face me in open combat?”

As if to accompany the words, a heavy thunderclap sounded from the approaching storm.

“Guard the hut, he must not escape!” he ordered his warriors, then turned to the gate from where the call had come.

Kazuki watched everything from the safety of his car. The demon’s call went through him.

Sure, she couldn’t get into the camp, its barrier was impenetrable to her. But as soon as Kazuki left the safety of the camp, he was vulnerable to attack. In his palanquin, he was immune to direct attacks, but it did little to protect him against mundane weapons or mechanical destruction. If a demon threw rocks or tree trunks at him, he was finished. He could only hope to escape soon.

All they had to do was finally open the damn gate.

Taka saw the naked figure in the shade of the trees. It was undoubtedly the musician from the town.

He was not disturbed by her nakedness and flawless beauty, because he recognized it as an illusion.

“Shoot them!” he ordered his marksmen without hesitation.

Six arquebuses thundered simultaneously.

When the smoke had cleared, the demon in the form of a woman lay motionless on the ground, half hidden behind a tree, as if she had sought cover at the last moment.

On the one hand satisfied, on the other disappointed that it was apparently so easy to defeat such demons, Taka tried to see if she was possibly still alive.

Moments passed without anyone moving.

At last, Taka nodded to four of his men.

“Get them, but be careful!”

The wooden gate was opened and the four men ran off with their swords drawn.

Turning to the marksmen: “When you’ve killed the demon, a reward awaits you. But now reload to be on the safe side!”

Those addressed nodded and immediately set about getting their arquebuses ready to fire again.

In the meantime, the four warriors had reached the motionless figure. At this moment, events came thick and fast.

The crack of a whip sounded and the priest’s carriage started moving towards the open gate.

At the same time, warning cries sounded from the direction of the hut.

As Taka turned around, he just saw the prisoner jump off the roof of the hut, out of Taka’s sight.
