The flight was quiet, and I arrived home a bit early. To my surprise, Jenny was sitting in the living room with an angry face.

“James, I was fired!”

I stopped. Jenny, the ideal employee, best in class in the famous Canberra course, had been fired? I asked her to tell me what happened.

“I arrived early (as always and earlier than some people I know), went to my desk to pick my personal items and went to the HR manager, since he had asked me to see him as soon as possible. He was there, congratulated me on my results in the course and started to discuss my new position of admin manager for the sales division. A promotion, higher salary, exactly how it was planned.”

Her face became very upset, even angry.

¨The phone rang, and Mr. Smythe wanted to see me. We were surprised, but I went. Before leaving he told me to be careful, since there had been incidents before. I remember what you once told me to do in a situation like this and before entering his office, put my phone on record. He was nice at the beginning, complimented me on my course, but said that he had a better offer: become his executive assistant. He’d make certain that I’d be promoted rapidly, and my salary would be increased accordingly. He always wanted to have such a beautiful woman as his personal assistant and would guarantee his personal attention to my progress in and outside the company. He was certain that we’d have a relationship that would be satisfactory for both. He was divorcing his wife in England, and he occasionally needed someone to accompany him on social events and I’d be the perfect person for this. In case I needed some money for these occasions, he’d be happy to give it to me. Did I agree? I could start immediately and perhaps we could meet at night for dinner to discuss the other responsibilities I would have.”

Now she really was angry, remembering his words.

“James, it was a weird conversation, and he did not even try to hide what he wanted - me in his bed. I waited for a moment and then said that I’d prefer to stay in the position that had been promised to me - the admin manager. I was certain that I could help the company more in that position. He stared at me and asked me whether I had understood his offer. I said yes, but I still thought I’d be more effective for the company in the admin job. He was getting upset and said that he didn’t care for admin or any other thing, he wanted me as his secretary and personal help. He told me to think twice because he was the President and he could do whatever he wanted with me, and he wanted me as his secretary! I’d better be prepared to be very friendly if I knew what was good for me! James, he was angry now and started to raise his voice, yelling at me to accept his offer or I would regret it very much.”

Jenny was furious, angry to be proposed that way by the CEO of IBM Australia.

“I got up and took my purse when he grabbed my arm. He was red in his face and asked once more whether I’d take his job and when I said no, he exploded. He became personal, saying that I had acted always as if he did not exist, that he was always compared to Allan Moise or the Count de Winter, and that he was tired of this. It was his company now and if I couldn’t follow his orders, he’d make certain that I’d be fired and whatever references I expected would be very negative, and I’d not get another job in this city. James, he was completely out of control. He asked once more whether I would change my mind, I said no, and he fired me. He called security and had me taken out of the building without even letting me get my things. James, that guy is mad! Can he do it?”

I knew the guy was mad, but it was a surprise that he had gone so far. He was obviously infatuated with Jenny and thought that he could pressure her into his bed with promotion and money, but he did not know Jenny very well. Jenny was irate.

“James, I want that man punished! If he believes he can do this to me, he’ll do it to others! Now I understand the rumors about him! Two girls already left under dubious circumstances, but nobody did anything! James, do something!”

I was furious, too. He had yelled at Jenny and had the courage to touch her! I asked for her phone and the recording confirmed every word she had said. First, I called the company to talk to the HR manager. He was apoplectic but told me that he could not do anything at this moment. He had a written order from the President to dismiss Miss Mary Ann Parker, due to comments out of order, not obeying a direct order, and trying to hit him. He knew that this was not true, but there were no witnesses, and he couldn’t do anything; he would make certain, however, that she would receive the best possible references and every cent due to her. Well, that didn’t help, but I had a much better weapon. I looked at the clock; it was late afternoon, but in New York, it would be early in the business hours. I called Bill Cunningham.

He was surprised to hear from me and after the normal courtesies, he asked why I had called him.

“Bill, you remember Miss Mary Ann Parker, my assistant?”

“Oh yes, a beautiful and very intelligent woman. What happened to her?”

“She was fired by Mr. Smythe, because she wouldn’t be available for his bed.”

There was silence on the other side and then he asked in a very formal voice. “James, tell me what happened, but remember that this is a very serious accusation!”

I told him the story and added what I had heard about from my former colleagues. The company was being run into the ground, the best people were starting to leave because of this guy, and he could be certain that at the end of the year, there would be only a skeleton left of what Allan Moise had guarded so well.

There was more silence and then the only comment was, “I’ll call you back.”

Maureen arrived and she was as perplexed as I, but she wanted action, and action now!

“James, you have a black belt! Beat him up so that he doesn’t touch another woman again! Protect your woman!”

I calmed her down and told her that I had started already my actions. She looked at Jenny, seething in her anger, and took out the Macallan.

“Jenny, drink this and empty the glass, and then we’ll discuss battle plans.” Jenny took the glass and gulped the whisky down. When she realized how strong it was, she started to cough and we ran to help her; it had, however, the desired side effect - she was calmer.

We had dinner and Bill Cunningham called back. “James, I cannot leave immediately, but I arranged my schedule, and I shall be in Sydney in four days’ time. Please transmit my apologies to Miss Parker; I know that she didn’t deserve this, but I’ll handle it now. Just make certain that she’ll be available for a meeting when I’m in Sydney. And thank you for calling, as I hadn’t realized how serious the situation had become.”

There was a moment of silence and then he continued. “Please tell also Mrs. Monahan, that I’ll have the letters she requested with me.”

Jenny was satisfied and opened a bottle of chardonnay. It helped to calm everyone down and we discussed how we could use this opportunity. She was available much sooner and Maureen started to smile.

“You, my dear, will become my assistant starting next week. Relax now for a few days, but then you enter my treadmill. If you believed that you have worked hard, just wait.”

Jenny looked at her. “From one slave driver to the other? What I did wrong in my life to deserve this?”

Maureen laughed. “You wanted to be part of us and now you pay for it. Do you regret this?”

Jenny jumped up and kissed her, then she came to me. “James, my love, I’ll never ever regret one single moment of our life together. Whatever will happen, I shall always be happy at your side.”

Maureen coughed and Jenny realized what she had done. “Maureen, James is the main reason why I’m here; but if he were not present, I’d be very happy to stay with you forever. You’re my sister, who cares for me and loves me. Don’t ever imagine that I don’t love you deep from my heart.”

Maureen smiled and hugged her. “Don’t forget that in this family teasing is an accomplished art form!”

We finished the bottle of wine and went to bed. Nobody was in the mood for action and all we did was talk some more, caress each other and at the end, after I had received my kisses, we went to sleep. I held Jenny close to me and during the night she made certain that I never let her go.

The next morning Maureen left for the office and promised to bring Jenny the financial statements and business plans we had for the Sydney branch. She would relax in her own way! Peter called me and asked what had happened. I gave him a brief summary but did not mention my call to New York. He was very upset, since he admired Jenny and confirmed that the mood in the company had gone from bad to worse.

“If you ever find a job, take me with you, James. I’ll go anywhere with you! You owe me - I introduced you to Maureen!”

I also spoke to Allan and beside his anger how Jenny had been treated, he was also interested in our plans to conquer the world. He accepted to work with us but made it clear that Ellen was his priority. When I told him about our intention to purchase the NSW company, he said that he knew the owner; he was tired and having no heirs, continued only because of his pride. There was a good chance that he might sell, and Allan promised to set up a meeting. I asked him not to say anything about our plans, just set up the meeting. I wanted to see the man in person and see how far I could go.

At night there was a very long phone call with Eileen, who was furious and wanted to kill the guy. She wanted to cancel the agreement between the companies, but I managed to bring her back to earth, promising that the guy would meet his deserved end.

It was funny; I had thought that we would have fun once Jenny was the whole day at home, but even I didn’t know our busybody. She was studying every little detail of our operation during the day and at night she quizzed us about facts and trends. Did I mention already that she was frightfully intelligent? We enjoyed each other, but it was gentle joy, and tender caresses.

The meeting with Mr. Jason Simpson, the owner of the logistics company, was set for the following Monday morning. At night we did our running; either Jenny was getting lazy, polite, tired, or we were getting better as we were not lapped anymore. We saw her coming up behind us, but she did not catch us. We also went to our martial arts class. I looked at both - Maureen was good, no doubt about it, but she did everything just to defend herself, not to hurt the other. Jenny, however, had developed her killer instinct. She had analyzed the moves, studied the weak parts of her opponent, and went for it; she stopped at the last moment, but she was very, very good at this. I wouldn’t like to be in front of her when she got mad.

The other students started to avoid practicing with her, since she just wiped the floor with them.

At the end, she practiced with me and Sensei, who called me aside at the end of the session.

“James, you have to be careful around Jenny. The way you are together on the mat is too revealing. She could beat any of my students, but when she is with you, she always stops at the last moment so that she wouldn’t hurt you. The same goes for you. She either is afraid of you or loves you very much. I would not want fear, but love is also dangerous in this sport. Think about it, James!”

We discussed this at night, but decided we could do nothing, since we just loved each other too much ... Perhaps next time Jenny could beat up Sensei ... or at least try it?

Two days later Peter called me and said that Mr. Cunningham would come to Sydney to look at operations (which were dreadful) and that a meeting had been set up with HR and all senior managers in the afternoon. At night I received a message to invite Miss Parker to a meeting at ten o’ clock with Mr. Cunningham and Mr. Smythe. Jenny entered panic mode, but I told her I would go with her, and all she had to do was tell the truth and nothing but the truth. We drilled her about her statement and that she should avoid at all costs getting angry, emotional, or vindictive.

“Whenever you feel like this, look at me and I will step in.” She promised to do this.

On Friday morning we walked to the company; Jenny in her best business outfit; light blue blouse, dark blue narrow skirt reaching her knees, a little bolero jacket, and dark blue sandals. She looked stunning. I was in my usual things, suit, white shirt, Hermès tie. When we arrived at the building Tony was there, as always.

“Good morning, Miss Parker, Count de Winter. It is a pleasure to see you again, even under these circumstances.”

I put my hand on his shoulder. “Tony, we know each other well enough that you can continue to call me Mr. de Winter...”

He smiled “Yes, sir. I’ll do that, Count.” His smile deepened; it was fun for him.

We were led to a meeting room, and it took a few minutes before the door opened and Mr. Cunningham entered, followed by Frederick Smythe. Bill was smartly dressed in his black suit and a red bowtie, while Smythe looked like a dandy - a dark green suit, a pink shirt, and tie adorned with dancing animals. They asked us to sit, and Bill started.

“I’m here because I’ve been informed about a potentially explosive situation. Smythe, you have been accused by Miss Parker of sexually harassing her and firing her when she did not give in to your desire.”

Smythe exploded. “Mr. Cunningham, nothing of this is true. I don’t know why you even asked her to come here. And what is that guy doing here?”

“Smythe, let’s do this in a correct way. She’ll state her accusation and you can respond. I just want to advise that I hate lying. Be careful with what you say. Mr. de Winter is here because she wanted it, and I know James well enough to say that he’ll help resolving the situation. So, Miss Parker, please start.”

Jenny made her statement as we had discussed at home and Mr. Cunningham listened without showing any reaction. Then he turned to Smythe.

“Now it is your turn.”

“Nothing of this is true. I offered her a job and she rejected my offer. To my surprise she became very upset and used a language that I thought unbecoming to a lady. I told her that and when I offered her a glass of water to calm down, she tried to slap me. She told me that she hated the company, that I was an incompetent manager, and that she’d tell everyone what she knew about our plans and strategies. I had no other choice, but to dismiss her.”

Mr. Cunningham looked at Jenny. “Miss Parker, what do you say?”

She asked whether she could put some questions to Mr. Smythe, and he agreed.

“Mr. Smythe, did you offer me a job as your personal assistant under the condition that I would be nice to you?” He started to explode, but Bill told him to wait with his response until Miss Parker had finished.

“Mr. Smythe, did you tell me that you were divorcing your wife and that I could have a very rewarding relationship with you, that you’d guarantee promotions and salary increases if I were available for out of business occasions? Did you tell me that I either agreed with you or I’d never have any chance in this company, and that you’d make certain that I would be dismissed and that references would be very negative about my competence and behavior?”

He got up and yelled at her that this was untrue, that she was lying and that he’d make certain that people knew about her false accusations. She better leave Sydney, since here she would not find a job again. When he stepped close to her, I got up, but Bill calmed me down.

“Smythe, you categorically deny that any of these accusations are true. Remember what I said about lying!”

He confirmed that he had told the truth, and that Miss Parker was lying.

“What proof does she have for all she said? It is word against word, and I trust that you believe the President of this company more than the words of a little secretary.”

“Miss Parker, do you have any proof? As Smythe said, there were just the two of you in the room.”

Jenny looked at me and I nodded. She took out her telephone and turned on the recording she had made. The voices were easily recognizable and as the recording went on, Smythe was pale. He had not expected this. Bill listened patiently to the end and turned to Smythe.

“Is this your voice on the recording?”

He stuttered and finally conceded that it was his, but this was all a big misunderstanding. He would never have done this if Miss Parker had not led him on! The fact that she had made a recording, showed that she had planned all this to incriminate him. He knew her well and people had told him about her, that she in no way could she have risen in the company so fast without offering sexual benefits to her superiors. I got up again; now I was furious, but Bill told me to sit down.

“For me, the meeting is over, and I’m satisfied that I’ve all information to take my decision. Smythe, please excuse us; I’ll come to your office in a moment.”

Bill was angry and his lips were pressed together. He waited until the door was closed and turned to Jenny.

“Miss Parker, I apologize for the treatment you’ve received here and the lack of protection from other company managers. I’d also be very grateful if you would not press charges. This company is already in such a mess that a public hearing could ruin everything. You’ve the right to do this, of course, but I ask you - please don’t. You can obviously have your job back or if you preferred, I’ll arrange a managerial position for you in HQ or any other company in my region. We need good people like you.”

Jenny smiled. “Mr. Cunningham, I agree not to press charges against Mr. Smythe. I’ve accepted, however, already another position...” and her eyes twinkled “ ... and with my salary more than doubled. I hate to leave there. I assume that you agree that it’ll never be the same here. The company was wonderful when Sir Allan looked after it, and I must say James here has taught me so much that I believe that I’ll be happier in another company, at least for just now. Thank you for your offer, though.”

He handed her his card. “If you ever change your mind, call me. James will tell me that I’m tough, but fair. Now if you would excuse us for a moment, I want a few words with James.”

He waited until we were alone. “James, thank you for bringing this to my attention. We all know it was a wrong decision to let you go, but internal politics can be stupid once in a while. However, if we were to offer you now the President’s position, would you accept it?”

I shook my head. “Thank you, Bill. If you had offered this two weeks ago, I would have accepted it gladly, and I swear at year’s end we would be shining again! But as Miss Parker, I gave my word to another company to start as VP and in six months’ time to become the President. It is a big company and we have plans to expand it aggressively. It’s in another part of the industry and I’ll not compete with this company, but I’ll be a tough customer.”

He was not satisfied. “Can I offer you a job in HQ? I don’t want to let you go!”

“Bill, if I were to break my word, would you want me working with you?” He looked at me for a long time and held out his hand.

“Good luck to you and stay in touch. If you ever were in NY let me know - I insist. But please wait for a moment; I have three letters to deliver. How do you want to do this? Do I have to go to Brisbane and hand-deliver one to Mrs. Monahan?”

I had discussed this with Eileen, and we had agreed that it had gone far enough.

“Bill, this is not necessary. All she wanted was that he had to write those letters personally, not have a flunky do this for him. I assume that they are as we discussed; if not, she’ll be all over you!”

He nodded and then we got up.

“Now I will have to fire this idiot! He was warned but did not listen. James, you cause me a lot of work!”

Jenny was waiting for me, and Bill offered once more his apologies. “James, I’ll fly back on Sunday. Will you and your lovely wife - and the as lovely Miss Parker - give me the honor to have dinner with me tomorrow night?”

I accepted with pleasure, and he said I would be contacted about the time and venue. We left and this stupid episode was ended.

We had arranged with Maureen to have lunch together and she wanted to know all the details. She was satisfied that Jenny’s accusations were accepted and that the guy was punished. Peter called and asked whether it was true that Smythe was fired. I told him to wait for an official announcement, but there were changes coming. He took a deep breath.

“James, if nothing is done, at year’s end there will be no decent guy left here. Did you take the job?”

I laughed and said no, as now I had another path in my life to follow.

“James, whatever you do and wherever you go, remember that you have a friend - no, friends, and especially I, who would follow you anywhere. Promise to remember this!”

I promised and when I told my two ladies about the conversation, they smiled. “Did we not tell you that you’ll always be surrounded by friends?”

Maureen had to go back and smiled at Jenny. “Darling, as your new boss I order you to relax over the weekend. Go home now, have a shower, but remember that there is a water shortage in Sydney, and you might have to share it with this goofus here, and have fun. James, I want my share at night, so don’t spend all your energy on Jenny. And tomorrow we go shopping; we need new clothes for the dinner. James, you can go and stay with Allan, and give Ellen kiss from us and tell her that. We’ll her see later. We’ll pick you up there in the afternoon but wait for our call.”

She gave me a kiss, touched Jenny’s cheek and off she was. At night we looked at the letters; they were exactly as Eileen had requested. One for her, apologizing for the accusations a former employee of the company had made, and that that employee was fired. One for Jenny, repeating the same arguments, and the last one for me, applauding for the sales records that IBM Australia had made under Sir Allan’s guidance and my efforts, and regretting that I left the company. No apologies for me, however!

We called Eileen and she agreed to let the case go away.

They took their time to dress and were the perfect power businesswomen - white blouses, one skirt dark blue, the other dark green, high heels, discreet but elegant jewelry, and a face that would convince anybody that it was his duty to sign a contract with them. I walked them to the car she had hired, and they drove off. Then it was my time to change and go to my meeting.

I had prepared a presentation that showed their current organization, the main problems I had seen, the ones they had told me about, and a plan for the future. It included buying out one son, signing contracts with the daughters, and preparing the younger son for his position as the future CEO. This way the succession would have far fewer problems. The Aberdeen brothers heard me out, complimented me on the thoroughness of the presentation and asked for some time to think about it. It was strange that they had asked me to bring my service bill and after we finished, Thomas took out his wallet and signed a cheque for the whole amount. They invited me for lunch in their club (fish and chips again), shook my hand, said that it was a pleasure working with me and that they had learned a lot. Then they were gone.

I called Allan and asked him whether I could see him, then drove over to his house. Ellen was sitting in the main room and lifted her face to be kissed.

“How are my girls? And how is the delectable Mrs. Monahan?”

Her words were friendly, but her eyes were serious.

“James, sit here with me, please. And Allan, please get a glass of port, but take your time.”

Allan shrugged his shoulders, left and I sat beside her.

“James, let me ask you something which is quite serious for me. Your mother-in-law is quite a woman; intelligent, aggressive, beautiful, charming. I remember what she did to Frank, and I saw Allan almost falling into the same trap. I don’t think that she does it intentionally, but the result is the same - men fall for her. I don’t have much time to live, and I don’t want my life upset because of her. Tell me, what can you do to avoid this?”

I was surprised, but not very much so. I had seen the same scene. What could I say?

“Ellen, first, she’s not out to steal your husband. Full stop! She is everything you said, but she’s not evil. What happened with Frank was that he thought there was something, but which she never offered. Ellen, it was his imagination! She is this way with everyone and part of the reason that she has survived in a man’s world is that she uses her charm. I’ve seen her in action, and it’s marvelous to observe, but she never follows on and whenever a man tries, she finds a way to let him cool down.”

Ellen looked at me with doubt in her eyes.

“Don’t misunderstand me and she can be quite ruthless, but she is not evil. I saw Allan looking at her, but Ellen, there is not a man in this world who wouldn’t look at her. Allan, however, is different; he enjoys beauty and intellect, but he’s yours, Ellen - hook, line, and sinker! Let him have some fun, please. I promise you that if I ever saw anything different happening, I reign in whoever stepped out of place. I’m safe since I have Maureen and Jenny, and with all the respect I have for Eileen, both have my heart and soul, and if I were to step out of line, I’m certain that both would pull me in quite fast! And you would not be far behind!”

She nodded, satisfied with my answer.

Allan looked in, curious whether he could come back, and Ellen waved him in.

“We’re finished and everything is resolved, dear. Now have some port and go and discuss boring business.”

Allan looked at me, but I did not respond. He led me to his office and asked me what the problem was. I told him about my meeting with the Aberdeen brothers and the suspicions I had about any progress.

“James, this was to be expected. They have reached a stage where a radical decision is very difficult, almost impossible. They will not accept a professional manager and they don’t have the courage to talk to their children. I believe that they expected you to come up with a miracle - nobody’s pride would be hurt, all problems would be resolved, the company would grow, and the family would be happy. You showed them the real world and they’ll decide not to decide, but just wait and hope for the problem to go away. I give them another three to five years and they’ll be bought off. A sad ending, but they’ll not do anything to change it. I suspected this would happen, but I wanted you to do your part, give them a solution and then? This is what will happen to you too often, James, and you’ll be disappointed every time. Perhaps if you had Accenture or KMPG behind you, it might be different, but I doubt it.”

He looked into his port, took a deep breath, and looked at me.

“So, your question will be - do I want to do this kind of work, get a lot of money, and be bored to death after a while, or do I decide that I want to run my own life, make my own decisions and be responsible just to myself? You needed this experience, but I know what youll decide, and you’ll be very successful, James - trust me.”

It took me some time to digest his words, but slowly it sank in. There was only one real alternative.

“Allan, say hello to the new CEO of NT! I, however, will need you all the way to survive the company, the industry and principally, Eileen. She’ll hand me the company gladly, but almost immediately she’ll question my decisions and that can only bring a bad ending. I’ve discussed with her the need to implement a Board and I want you on it. I shall be her Executive Assistant for a period and then she retires to the Board; there I’ll need you to balance her attempts to take over again and principally, to give me part of the business acumen you have accumulated during these years. Will you accept this, please?”

He smiled. “James, you know that you can always count on me. You’d be successful without me, but I know this country better than you, and this will help. Yes, I accept. And on top of it, I’ll be the target of the beautiful Mrs. Monahan - this will be fun!”

“Just be careful how far you go with Eileen, as she occasionally doesn’t know her limits!”

“James, my son, I do know mine and I have Ellen to remind me of them!”

We raised our glasses and toasted to my future. When we told Ellen, she was not surprised; she had seen this coming for a long time. When she kissed me goodbye, she whispered, “Just remember what I asked you!” and I nodded.

Eileen had decided to come to Sydney and discuss new opportunities with Maureen. They had gone out in the morning, and I was curious what had happened.
