I got home from work and after looking at my mail, I checked to see if I had any phone messages. Yes, I’m one of those few people who still rely on his home phone more than his cell phone. My cell phone is for business and emergencies. I don’t need to talk to a friend while I’m shopping in the grocery store. He can wait until I get home to talk to me. I saw the blinking light on the phone message machine indicating I had at least one call. I pressed the button to replay the message and this is what I heard.

The machine announced Thursday 2:17 PM, and then a man’s voice, “Hello Mr. Franklin, this is Jack Graham; I’m the manager of your mother’s condo building. There’s been a incident, she passed out at the condo meeting today and was taken by ambulance to the Tampa General Hospital. That’s all I know. I’m sorry I don’t have any more information about her condition. The phone number of the hospital is 813-844-7229. When you find out something about her condition and have the time, please call me back at 813-844-6969. If I’m not here please leave a message. All her friends are worried, and I’ll pass any information on to them. Again, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news.”

I looked at my watch and it was now 5:48, three and half hours since the call. As I dialed the hospital’s phone number, I knew it was a heart attack. My mom’s side of the family was notorious for clogged arteries and bad hearts. Both her older brother and sister had heart attacks and had quadruple bypass surgery. I just hoped it wasn’t too severe.

The phone started to ring, “Tampa General Hospital, If you are trying to reach a patient, input their room number in now.”

Oh I hate this, the menu. What ever happened to human interaction on the phone? Half the time I fuck up the menu and I have to dial the number and start all over again. I better be careful or I’ll be ready to throw this phone in the trash can.

If you know your doctor’s extension input it now.

If you would like to make an appointment with one of our departments, please call during our regular hours which are Monday through Friday 8 AM until 5 PM.

If you would like to speak with our information desk, please press 0 now.

I quickly pressed 0 and hoped for the best. Imagine my surprise when I heard “Julie speaking, how may I help you?”

“Julie, it’s so good to hear a human voice,” I said.

She laughed. “I hear that a lot. To whom am I talking and how may I direct your call.”

“Julie, I’m Dave Franklin and I’m trying to locate my mother. I got a message left on my answering machine that my mother had passed out and had been taken to your hospital. That was at 2:17. I live in Pennsylvania and didn’t get home from work until about 5 minutes ago. So I would really, really appreciate it if you could get me in touch with a nurse or doctor that could tell me something about my mother’s condition. Her name is Katherine Franklin, That’s F R A N K L I N. Her address is 4 C North Palm DR. Tampa.”

“Alright, let me see what I can find out,” said Julie. “I’ve got it. She’s in the Cardiac ICU; don’t read anything into her being there. That’s standard procedure for any one coming into the hospital that has suffered any type of cardiac event. I’ll transfer you to the nurses’ station. There should be someone there that can give you some information. Make sure that you specify you’re her son and that you’re in Pennsylvania, they’ll be more likely to give you information plus they may need information from you. Good Luck.”

“Thanks Julie,” I replied and the then I heard the phone ringing. This is when the hopeless feeling really hit me. I’m 1400 miles from my mother and not only can’t I do anything, I can’t even see her. Luckily, before I had time to feel more depressed, I heard someone pick up the phone.

“Cardiac ICU Samantha speaking.”

“Samantha,” I quickly said, “My name is David Franklin, I’m calling from Pennsylvania, I understand you have my mother Catherine Franklin in ICU and I was hoping you could tell me how she is doing, if she’s awake, or if her doctor has been in to see her or even if he’s been informed. I guess anything that could help ease my mind right now would help.

“Mr. Franklin, your mother has suffered a heart attack. The medics did a great job getting to her quickly and administering to her needs. They had her stable by the time she was admitted to the hospital. It was a fairly severe heart attack, but she’s not on a respirator, but she’s getting oxygen. She has been conscious off and on; in fact, she has signed the forms needed to run some tests tomorrow.”

“That sounds about what I had expected,” I told the nurse. “Her older brother and older sister, both suffered heart attacks and had quadruple bypass surgery when they were a little older than my mom, so it runs in her family. I’m just glad she’s OK.”

“She’s not out of the woods, yet especially if she needs bypass surgery, but I think the worse is behind her. While I have you on the phone, let me check her records and see if there is anything I need from you.”

There was a pause and I could hear her mumbling to herself as she checked the records in her computer. “I have all her records since she was admitted here about two years ago for a fall.”

“Yes, she slipped in the bath tub and fell and hit her head. It was a nasty bruise and they kept her over night to make sure there was no concussion, I replied”

“Let me make sure we have an updated phone number for you, in case we have to reach you. I have you listed as home phone 215-843-6754, is that correct?”

“Yes, it is.”

“Do you have a cell phone, we don’t have one listed here?”

“Yes, I do, it’s 610-534-5542. I guess I can’t talk to her tonight.”

“No, I’m sorry, she’s asleep and we don’t have phone access at the beds in ICU. She will be going to a regular room probably tomorrow or Saturday at the latest, as long as there are no setbacks or complications. She can phone you from there. How else can I help you?”

“Do you know if her doctor got in to see her?”

“He did not, but that’s not unusual. He was notified and was given an update on her condition. He ordered the tests and he’ll probably be in to see her tomorrow, before the tests. They are usually too busy to see the patient right away before they have test results unless something serious is happening. They get updates and if the patient is stabilized and resting comfortably, they usually don’t come in.”

“OK, then thanks again Samantha, you have been wonderful. I feel so much better now. I can rest easier. Thanks again. Goodbye.”

Well that was a load off my mind. At least she was in the hospital, getting the care she needed. It sounded like she was in pretty good shape considering she suffered a heart attack. I guess I should call my sister and inform her of mom’s condition. I didn’t mind talking to her, I really love her, it was the asshole she married that I didn’t want to have anything to do with.

“Maybe I should take time and tell you about myself and my family. My name is David Franklin, but everyone calls me Dave. I’m 43 years old and I’m a CPA and have my own business outside of Philadelphia. I’m six feet tall, light brown hair, hazel eyes and weigh about two hundred pounds. I do a little jogging to keep the weight down, so I don’t have much of a belly, but I sure don’t have the six pack that all the actors are sporting.

In my junior year in college I met Karen, the woman with whom I thought I would spend the rest of my life. We got married right after we graduated from college. She was a business major. She first started out selling children’s clothing and then moved up to selling women’s clothing for a small clothing manufacturer. After a few years of doing that, she decided she’d rather be a buyer and worked for a small chain of local stores. After years of doing that, she got bored again got into the advertising business actually by accident. One of the vice presidents of the stores that she was buying for criticized her purchases, saying they weren’t selling because the customers didn’t want that particular line of clothes. She responded by telling him he wasn’t advertising them correctly and not targeting the proper age group for them. When he dared her to do better, she took him up on it, designed the ad campaigned and the line sold out. She was hooked, she liked the thrill of seeing the product on everyone’s mind and so she went into advertising. She was good at it and she was traveling all around the area, but she liked the parties and the glitter of the big city, even Philly bored her. So after sixteen years of marriage, she divorced me and moved to New York City to the big time. We didn’t have any children, so that was one thing we didn’t have to worry about. We split our assets equally and we both went our separate ways. The truth was we had been going our separate ways for quite a few years before the divorce made it official.
