He actually had seen some of Akemi’s art work, on his second day in town dropped by Mitchell’s place, hoping both were home. Akemi was out, though, and some students of Mitchell’s showed up by surprise. He let them in the back entrance, saying “This is the parlor.”
“Wow,” one said as they looked around at the stuff on the walls.
“Actually, those paintings are my wife Akemi’s.”
“Yeah, but this sketch is also amazing,” a student said, staring avidly at the wonder he beheld.
That too was Akemi’s but Mitchell hadn’t seen any point in mentioning it. The only things of his in view were some photos, and they were quite good. Nelson gave his former student credit, and wondered if he also deserved some, if the development of Mitchell’s photo-taking hobby (as opposed to art like Akemi’s), owed some to his teaching, and he decided it didn’t. Mitchell’s talent was his own. Nelson had only encouraged it, as he had urged Mitchell to find a woman like Akemi.
Nelson did feel a little sorry for his old friend. Akemi’s brilliance definitely overshadowed him. Her bright beauty. That’s what Mitchell had said her name meant. Among the photos was one of her face. She definitely had something special, places to go that her husband couldn’t.
Nelson had a way of saying things completely out of context. Akemi got that.
She waited for him to return to the point, which he did. In the clamor, she’d forgotten what it was, but he hadn’t, not for a moment.
“Go on.”
Thoughts of heading to the door surfaced again. Nelson’s pushiness stirred up resentment, a will to resist.
Curiosity overcame it.
“What?”
“The dream.”
Mitchell left his old girlfriend Pam to be with Akemi, but it was actually Pam who finalized the breakup.
“It’s sad to leave someone you care about but have to because things aren’t working out.”
Her face showed she felt it, both the sadness and the necessity.
They’d had the conversation more than once before and again Mitchell thought they wouldn’t follow through, but Pam had made up her mind. He tried to talk her out of leaving as he had successfully in the past when push had come to shove. But she was no longer open to his appeals.
And she understood, didn’t hold desire to move on against him, agreed they shouldn’t be together; they’d known for a while; she was actually glad he’d said the truth out loud; eventually they’d have to face it, and why not now? They never had been right for each other. She told him so, sadly, her big eyes full of tears but resolute, her eyes Mitchell found beautiful just not right for him.
