A pigeon had gotten into the apartment, small one—female?—and was trying to get out, at the window where he stood, above him, not realizing the glass was a barrier. It could see outside but couldn’t get there and didn’t know why, kept trying, repeating the same fruitless effort. Was that how Akemi felt, wanting to be free of their marriage? Mitchell wanted to write the story of his marriage to Akemi—no, to say it out loud. She’d probably encourage him in that. She was an artist, unlike him. But the neighbors might hear. The apartment was so silent now any sound would stand out, resonate far and wide. He kept his voice to himself. His thoughts shouted.
He felt like starting the big narrative project, making a permanent record, now. An audio file. Time was wasting.
Where the fuck was she?
He was in their apartment but felt he was somewhere far away, in another country, one he’d never set foot in before and would be staying a while, have to acclimate. Not easy. Mitchell tried not to feel sorry for himself. That wouldn’t be worthy of Akemi. He wanted, still, to be a man who deserved her.
He thought of a young woman he’d heard about who flaunted the rules of basic safety in the city, ignored dangers known to everyone, proudly defied, upset those who cared for her, dismissing warnings they gave. And then one day she got caught by a gang, and then it was a question of which one would have her first. There was no prospect of release in the near term.
