Mitchell had finished the tedious paperwork that needed doing at the start of each semester, sitting with colleagues and filling out endless forms without which he wouldn’t be paid!

He walked into the hall and immediately met a former student, one from Colombia he didn’t know well but had a good feeling about. She had soft straight blond hair cut in bangs and soft brown eyes suffused with light, it seemed, a gentleness. She was with a friend, and they looked at Mitchell’s arms and said, “You’re strong” in a playful but intelligent way. Michelle (her name) and friend Catherine said they’d seen his works of fiction listed online at various sites. They seemed awed by that. “You must be popular.”

“Just because my stuff is available here and there doesn’t mean people read it,” Mitchell corrected with a laugh. He’d put the works of short fiction on those web portals himself, after all. Response so far was tepid.

His student and friend looked a little confused. They were adults, college students, but still didn’t know much about the adult world and its disappointments.

Mitchell changed the subject. “Why are you here?” he asked Michelle and immediately regretted the question. In today’s political climate, she might think he was challenging her right to be in the country. He saw her expression begin to change and quickly put in, “What do you do?” Clarifying his intent, the friendly interest.

“Are you a musician?”

Michelle’s shoulders visibly relaxed as she saw she wasn’t under attack (from her teacher, of all people; these days you never knew).

“Yes,” she said as her classmate looked on, smiling shyly.

“Wow. How did I know you were a musician?” Mitchell said. “It was just a guess.”

Michelle’s soft light brown round eyes moved him, the sunlight that seemed to move in them even in that corridor, the gentleness of the natural world, kindness, goodness of human beings, their potential, creativity showed.
