2nd Friday – In Chester

It was late Friday morning when Jan, Jen, and Jo completed upgrading a security installation. While Jo and Jen packed up their tools, Jan went over the changes with the customer. It was time for lunch when they left a very happy customer. After lunch they went to the office, on entering, Jan said, “How was your morning Brandy?”

“Excellent. We now have two more employees. Both Sam and Darin were very happy for the opportunity to join us full time. The salary we offered was fine and they liked the idea of taking the vans home on weekends. They realize that by doing that they will be on call. We agreed to rotate the primary person on call. Once we add another person, we will rotate weekends off.”

“Great,” responded Jo.

“We received two requests for estimates. The requests seemed to contain all the information needed to complete a quote.”

“Great. Even so we need to schedule a site or customer visit. See if you can fit it in early next week. Lets have Sam and Darin each take one. Either Jan or I will accompany them. I think they will do fine, as they’ve done their own estimating.”

“Okay.”

“If these quotes are for home owners, then we will likely need to do the visits in the evening.”

Brandy noted, “We could likely justify another employee to just do quotes.”

Jan replied, “While the idea has merit, a better choice would be to add another skilled technician. With that staffing, you could rotate the person doing quotes. If we get the job then have the person who wrote the quote be a part of the work crew. By doing that everyone gains knowledge.”

“So it would be like the way the three of you work.”

“Yep. You may need to consider the scope of the quote when you decide who to send. Based on the experience we have had with Sam and Darin, they should be fine. You might have them to look over a quote together before you set up an appointment and let them decide who makes the call.”

“Which is sort of how you all sort it out.”

“At times. Another factor is it depends on whether the quote is due to a referral and who did the work for the referral. If I was not a referral, it depends on who feels comfortable with the job’s scope.”

“That is a little more complicated than I suspected.”

“Brandy, it is an aspect that you will catch on to very quickly.”

Jan continued, “Monday morning, we have an appointment with our attorney. The purpose is to determine what structure changes we need to make to the business, if any, for you to fill your new role.”

“Okay. We have three small jobs that you all can cover Monday afternoon.”

“Great,” they responded.

Jan added, “Once we stock up for it, we will head out. See you Monday.”

“Have a nice evening.”

“You too.”

2nd Friday – Lone Pine

Susan woke to the sound of the alarm clock’s soft chimes. As she stretched she felt really well rested. Continuing to lay there, she went back over the decisions made last night. They still felt right so she decided to to see Nancy after the phone call. A check of the time, she realized it was time to leave for Tai Chi.

While waiting for Tai Chi to start, the two women who had been using the bench last night approached her. “Good morning, my name is Li,” she said extending her hand.

“Good morning, I am Susan. It is nice to meet you.”

“Good morning Susan, I am Lana. Did you enjoy the bench?”

“Very much. It looked like you did as well. I could tell Li was pleased.”

Li said, “Yes I was. I gather that was your first time.”

“Yes.”

“How did you like it?” queried Lana.

“As I told Lori and Crystal, it was fantastic. However, I still think satisfying my lust with another person or two is more satisfying.”

“We agree. The mechanical devices provide a much more intense release, well several releases. When interacting with another person, it is much more satisfying even when using the mechanical dildo as the clinical aspect is diminished.”

“I felt that way when Crystal or Lori were the center of attention. Crystal suggested that she handle the dildo controls as it was my first time and would be less distracting. Afterward, I was glad she made the suggestion.”

“Good choice in limiting your distractions. Crystal is very good with the dildo control as I suspect you discovered.”

“Yes. I am glad that I let her operate it.”

Janet said, “It is time let us begin.”

Madeline said, “Good morning,” as she sat her breakfast tray down. “Mind if I join you.”

“Please do and good morning,” responded Susan, as she finished with her breakfast.

Madeline then handed Susan an envelope saying, “This contains the details on arranging your video call this morning. It is set for 10 AM. As I mentioned yesterday, I don’t think I need to be involved in the call. However, if there are issues involving this site call me and I can join you.”

“Thank you.”

“So did you enjoy your evening?”

Susan smiled, “News travels fast.”

“Sometimes. I saw Lori a little earlier. She looked quite relaxed. Seeing you with her and Crystal last night, that seemed to be a reasonable conclusion to draw.”

“Well done,” responded Susan laughing. “I had a great time, and I believe they did as well.”

It was a little before 10, when Susan locked her suite’s door. Turning on some music, she then checked the room for listening devices, even though she didn’t expect to find any. She then checked the computer for a keyboard logger and didn’t find one. As she finished her preparations, she wondered if she was becoming paranoid.

Right at 10 AM, she initiated the VPN connection, then connected to the IP address using the provided credentials. Once the connection was established a window opened showing a text message. It told her that an app would be installed and to respond to the prompts, appropriately.

Several minutes later she gasped when two familiar faces appeared on her monitor. “Good morning, Susan,” they said together. “We can tell by your expression that you recognize us. To refresh your memory, we are Steve and Tracey.”

Tracey held up a sign that said, “We just need to chat for a few minutes before getting into the details.”

After a short pause Susan nodded saying, “Good morning. I hope you plan on enlightening me as to what’s going on.”

As Tracey’s instructions indicated Susan held up a sign saying, “Checked computer and room. No bugs. No logger.”

Both nodded with a smile.

Tracey said, “Your just as cool as we remember. How do you like your new surroundings?”

“Very much and very different. I am very comfortable here, but it is not a place I would have sought out. However, the facilities are great. The residents are very friendly. The clothing optional aspect is taking a bit to adjust to even though I often didn’t wear much at home.”

“We know,” they replied with a smile.

“We were sad to hear about the loss of your soul mates.”

Susan’s eyes filled with tears, as she said, “Thank you. It was really strange as they just vanished as our planned holiday was to begin. Our original plan was to drive to the destination together, but I wasn’t able to leave when it was time to go. So they decided to go on ahead, and I would fly out to meet them.

“When I reached the hotel, I expected them to be waiting for me. I was surprise to learn that they hadn’t checked in. So I registered and went up to the room. In the room, I tried to call them but their cell phones went right to voice mail. I attributed it to them not having reception so I left a message. Seeing it was lunch time, I went to lunch. Back in the room, there wasn’t much to do so thumbed through the channels. While doing that I saw a pop up news brief about a violent traffic incident along their planned route. So I figured that if they were behind the incident so their delay seemed reasonable. Then surprisingly the evening news had nothing regarding the incident which I found puzzling.

“I did manage to get some sleep. After breakfast, I went surfing looking for any news along their route. It was in vain as I found nothing. I stayed another day watching every news channel. When I began searching for more information about the incident, I didn’t find anything which gave me the creeps. So I dropped it. So I am left with intuitively suspecting that they stumbled into and were caught up in someone’s misadventure. That view is based on the brief news report and its subsequent disappearance. Their absence still hurts.”

“Okay,” said Steve, “our checks show we are secure so we can be a bit more open. We understand your feelings about your loss, and you have our deepest sympathy. It was quite a while after they disappeared that we heard about the incident via some mutual friends. They shared with us what they knew of your planned trip and how you were doing. We thought about contacting you but it had been so long after the event we decided not to. Our reasoning was that we didn’t want cause you more angst. In hindsight perhaps we should have.

“Several months later, we learnt more details of the misadventure. From what we’ve been able to piece together, we believe your conclusion was correct. Bear in mind that we don’t have any substantive information about the actual event. There are indications that at least one other vehicle was caught up in the event.

“Why our interest? Well we have fond memories of our interaction in high school, so we’ve have sort of followed your career. This was done as a casual interest as you would do for a good friend. However based on what we learnt regarding the incident and the lack of details, it prompted us to follow your activities a bit more closely. We considered our effort to be fulfilling the pledge we made to each other many years ago.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t learn of the recent threat to you until shortly before an attempt was to be made. So planning your abduction and relocation had be done very quickly. Time was so short, we felt we had to act immediately.”

“I gather you didn’t know that I was at a conference that week.”

“We discovered that,” Tracey said with a smile. “That was the primary reason we decided to move ahead with your extraction without contacting you. From our perspective, that was the only way we could ensure your safety and let the event playout.”

“Well I was a bit edgy Friday due to an odd incident as I was leaving the conference’s Friday evening reception. A woman bumped into me when I reached out to assist her, she palmed me a note. I didn’t read it until I was in the car. It simply said, ‘Watch your back’. I shared that with the three Js when I found them in my condo.”

“Interesting,” responded Steve. “It wasn’t something we did.”

Tracey added, “Well we chose to embrace our pledge, when we became aware of those we believe were responsible for the misadventure that your friends stumbled into. Our monitoring of your activities was casual and not invasive. Now knowing this, we hope this doesn’t affect our relationship. In hindsight, perhaps we should have contacted you right after the event.”

“Well ... even though it has been a long time but knowing you two as I remember, I certainly don’t feel that it does. I am very thankful that you acted as you did, so no second guessing. Going back to the incident, I gather you were able to learn some of the details.”

“I wish. We only know that there was an incident and it occurred on the route your friends were taking. How they became involved is not known. As to who was involved, we have some strong suspicions but the information is very tenuous. Our weakness is that if we probe too actively, it could blow back on us. At this point, we think it was accidental that your friends became involved. We understand that there were a few others who stumbled into the misadventure and died as well.”

“Well ... it at least removes some of the uncertainty regarding their disappearance. As to you all taking an interest in my welfare, I think your concern was confirmed by what happened last weekend at my condo. Again, I really appreciate what you did for me. I am more puzzled by the reason behind the attempt to kill me.

“Now, if I remember correctly the last time we were together was in high school.”

“Good memory,” responded Tracey.

“If memory serves me correctly, we were very close friends.”

“Yes, the three of us were from my perspective, I would say extremely close.”

“Thank you, that crystallizes some memories of us together. Considering my recollection of our feelings for each other, I am embarrassed by the fact that I lost contact with you all. When I was in college, I thought I saw both of you on campus, but circumstances never provided an opportunity to reach out to you. In hindsight, I think I should have made more of an effort to do so.”

Tracey replied, “Don’t be embarrassed cause, we could have made more of an effort to contact you as we knew you were a student there. Bear in mind that we were a couple of years behind you, although we did have a lot of interaction in high school. It was during one of our high school activities that we made the pledge to watch each others back.”

“Oh, I remember the event that precipitated that. That situation sucked big time.”

“Yes, it did. After you graduated, it sort of resolved itself. The idiots didn’t learn and drove off a cliff rather than running someone off the road. While it wasn’t in the paper, we understand that they were all under the influence.”

“Well it seems like justice was served.”

Steve muttered, “Sort of, as I don’t see it as being equal to the pain they caused.”

Tracey said, “To clarify an earlier comment, yes we are now an exclusive pair. This sort of took place gradually and firmed up in college.”

“Great. So what caused our paths to cross again?”

“I wouldn’t characterize them as crossing but as them traveling together at a distance. In our work, data analysis is a key component. Some time ago, we were asked to review a data analysis as some of the recipients weren’t happy with the conclusions. After going over the analysis, we were quite impressed with the insight the analyst exhibited in doing the analysis. We advised the customer that we agreed with the results. As to those who had requested the analysis, they discounted the conclusions much to their regret.

“When we learnt that you had done the analyst, we were very impressed. Actually the insights, you pulled out of the data were beyond impressive. So we are your admirers. The incident also prompted us to see how you were doing. This took place quite a while before the incident involving your friends.”

“Well I’ve had some projects where the client strongly disagreed with the conclusions. Several wanted me to modify the results to fit their perceptions, to which I said no. A few even got really upset when I wouldn’t back down. Surprisingly, them bad mouthing my work brought me more opportunities.”

Tracey laughed, “That’s ‘cause the data didn’t support their view. As to recent events, there appears to be a connection between a recent project of yours and the activities of some well funded people. There is a reasonable probability that some of them may have had a connection to the incident that resulted in your friends disappearance. Members of this group tend to work both sides of the street. From what we’ve learnt since then, their concerns had two aspects to it. One is the type of data bases you were recently accessing for a recent analysis. The second is your presence at the conference last week. The combination appears to have caused them considerable concern which we don’t understand. We know that the initiation of the termination contract was done by an associate of theirs. The associate was seeking to improve their status with the group by removing a potential problem, you, and at the same time rid them of a troublesome team, the assasins.”

“Clear as mud, right?” noted Steve.

“For a brief version, its okay. I think I can fill in the missing pieces, but it still doesn’t make sense. So from my perspective I am missing a key piece. You don’t happen to know the project that prompted their concern.”

“Not at the moment. Our situation is such that we can’t inquire, as we can only listen.”

“Fine. I really appreciate your skill in recognizing the situation and responding to it. Based on what happened, I gather that you didn’t identify the threat with sufficient time to warn me.”

“When we recognized the implications of what we heard, it was pretty much a fire drill to arrange getting you to a safe location without drawing any attention. Fortunately we knew of Jan’s group, and that they were local. Fortunately they were available, although it took some convincing before they would take the job. Considering who wanted to remove you, even if we had more time, we would likely have proposed the same solution. Which was to move you to safety, and let the event sequence run to completion. This is ‘cause once a contract is let, it is near impossible to cancel. Besides the associate was using this hit as a way to eliminate a group of their hitters. That is an aspect we don’t fully understand.

“The other aspect is that if you had visibly escaped, it would not have diminished the risk to you. We felt that we had no choice but to make sure you weren’t present when the event took place. We were aware of the group operating facilities like where you are. It was in talking to them, we learnt that they had a method for ensuring your disappearance. So by taking advantage of that method, we think that any future risk to you is very minimal.”

“Okay, I am in agreement with the path you chose and very thankful for your prompt response. I don’t know if you realize it, but the team you chose happened to be friends of mine.”

“Really,” exclaimed Steve and Tracey.

“Based on what you’ve said I gather that your business activity is in the field of intelligence gathering, analysis, and security.”

“Yes, primarily gathering along with some analysis. We don’t do security setups directly. Instead we represent several firms that have a variety of capabilities. Castle Security fits that category.”

“So the data base analysis projects that I was working on are dead in terms of my participation. Do you know if the sponsors hired someone else?”

“Well we really don’t know what open projects you have. As to the one we mentioned, we have only met that sponsor one time and have very limited contact since then. We don’t know which of your projects prompted the attempt to terminate you.”

“Does Castle Security know what I was working on?”

“Not from us. We did give them enough information to insure that they knew what to collect from your condo along with you. Based on what they collected, I guess they could draw some conclusions. Why?”
