1st Tuesday Morning at Lone Pine
It was approaching dawn when Jan and Jen entered the Security Center. Based on the expression on Rita’s face, their entrance had obviously surprised her. They said, “Good morning.”
“Good morning. You surprised me as I don’t believe I’ve ever had visitors this early in the day.”
“Yesterday, it was mentioned that movement was often detected on the hillside around dawn but it wasn’t clearly resolved. So we are here to hope fully to see it as it occurs.”
“Okay. What do you want me to do?”
Jan replied, “Can you set one of the monitors to only show that location continuously without impacting your tasks?”
“Pretty much.”
“Could you elaborate?”
“It will lengthen the interval between each view. If motion is detected then the cycle is interrupted as the view where motion was detected is shown on the center monitor. The adjacent monitors then change to show the area on each side of the area where motion was detected. Those three views are shown, until the sensed motion ends or we release the hold.
“Okay. I’ve set the left monitor to show the location where we seen odd movements. I’ve adjusted the image size so that the area of interest is full screen.”
“It looks kind of fuzzy,” noted Jan.
“That is due to the camera resolution.”
“I presume the full images are being saved,” noted Jan.
“Yes.”
“Excellent, as I suspect we will want to review them afterward.”
They had just started watching the monitors, when Jo entered carrying four coffee cups as well as rolls. “Rita, I hope plain coffee is okay.”
“Perfect! Oh, rolls as well.” With a smile she added, “That makes you my favorite person.”
“So what are we doing?”
Jen replied, “Jan and I are going to monitor the activity where they suspect someone is coming over the ridge most mornings. Why don’t you look over Rita’s shoulder?”
“Fine.”
“Ah we have an IR sighting,” said Jan.
It was shortly after Jan’s comment when Jen made a similar comment.
Both watched what were apparently two objects coming down the hill. It was only for a short distance then they turned to move horizontally for a short distance before disappearing.
“Well,” said Jan, “based on their movement, I suspect those objects are people rather than animals. If so what are they doing?”
Jen said, “Based on the site map, that location would enable them to view of the side and back of this plateau.”
“Rita, does this occur everyday?”
“I don’t know as we rotate shifts. To be honest, we focus more on the area closer to our location and toward the county road. So we may not notice the activity everytime.”
“Well based on the site map, that location is near the maximum resolution range for the sensors,” noted Jo.
“We need to do a recon,” said Jan. “This also supports replacing the cameras.”
“I’ll put the recon on our to do list for after we return with our equipment,” noted Jen.
“Agreed. Rita, can you ask the others to pay a bit more attention to that location?”
“Sure. What do you mean by more?”
“Primarily we’d like to know whether it occurs everyday. Do the objects always go to the same location? Also the time when the activity occurs. I don’t think doing that will interfere with your other duties.”
“Okay. That should be easy enough. I’ll leave a note for the others and note it in the log.”
Looking at Jen and Jo, Jan said, “Let’s go freshen up. By then it will be time for breakfast.”
They both nodded, then the three said, “See you later Rita.”
“Look forward to it.”
As they walked back to their suite, Jan said, “If it is someone monitoring this location, then I can think of a lot of questions that need answers.”
“Daily monitoring like that long term would be expensive,” responded Jo.
Jen snorted then, “A bigger question would be why? What is so valuable?”
“We should raise this issue with Madeline when we meet with her this afternoon. She may have an idea besides, I am sure we will have a bunch of other questions by then.”
“Agreed.”
Susan arrived in the gym just as several others did. She inquired, “Are you all here for the Tai Chi session?”
“I am. I believe I met you in the barn yesterday, my name is Lena.”
“Yes, I believe so. My name is Susan. I am new here so thanks for refreshing my memory. This is my second day of being up and around.”
“We have our Tai Chi session over on the basketball court. How do you like being here?”
“Well so far, I think it is great. Everyone I’ve met has been very friendly. You?”
“Coming here was a very good move for me. Initially I wasn’t very keen on coming here even though it was the best choice. I’ve been here two years, and will likely stay for several more.”
“That says a lot. Good morning, Jackie. I presume you are our leader for this.”
“Good morning Susan. Actually Lena is our leader today.”
Lena enquired, “Susan, is Tai Chi new to you?”
“Nope, but my experience may differ from how you do it here. I haven’t done this with a group for some time.”
“Well I don’t believe we do anything unique. I think I will go at a slower pace than usual as we have some fairly new participants.”
“Fine. Lead on.”
Lena said to the group, “Shall we begin.” Once everyone was in position she started the music.
Forty-five minutes later when the music ended Lena said, “Well done.”
Stepping over near Susan, Lena said, “Susan, some of us rinse off by the pool then swim to add an aerobic component.”
“An excellent choice,” Susan replied as she joined the group headed toward the pool.
After swimming 15 laps, Susan wrapped her hair in a towel then headed for her suite after telling everyone that she would see them bright and early tomorrow.
Later on leaving the dining room, she met Kim exiting Hall B.
“Good morning, Kim.”
“Good morning, Susan. I have a suspicion that you are looking for me.”
“Well that is true, as I wanted find out how I could obtain a PC with two large monitors, preferably a Mac with the maximum memory and several terabytes of disk space. Two cabinets for external drives would be nice. However, I am not sure how soon I can reimburse you for it.”
Smiling she replied, “That won’t be a problem, because those items should arrive today.”
“You must be a mind reader,” exclaimed Susan.
“Sometimes I wish however it was arranged by your sponsor. As to paying for it, they didn’t give any indication. From what was on the invoice, I think you will be quite pleased with it as it is the latest model. I’ll put a copy of the invoice in your mail box.”
On hearing the news Susan smiled as she hugged Kim. “Thank you.”
Kim returned her hug then said, “You are welcome but I really didn’t do anything. I wish all hugs were so easy to obtain.”
“Well with as little as we wear, they definitely have a more intimate feeling. It is almost like sugar, in that you want more and more.”
Laughing Kim replied, “That they are. Anything else I can do for you.”
“Mailbox?”
“It is next to the main door to your suite.”
“Anything else?”
“Not at the moment.”
“When your computer stuff arrives, it will be placed in your suite. We should probably put another desk in your suite as well.”
“I didn’t notice but is there a UPS in the suite.”
“Not usually but there was one on the invoice. I wouldn’t expect it to arrive until this afternoon.”
“Thanks.” Susan then gave Kim another hug before heading for the gym and her physical fitness assessment with Jackie.
After selecting her lunch Susan saw that there was an open place at the table where Lena and Crystal were eating. On reaching the table she said, “May I join you all?”
“Certainly,” replied Crystal with Lena nodding.
“Did you make it to Tai Chi this morning?” inquired Crystal of Susan.
“Yes. Although the routine was a bit different than I’ve used before, it was a great session. Lena was the leader and she was easy to follow. Do you go?”
“Occasionally,” replied Crystal. “I don’t think I’ve attended a session when Lena led.”
“Several of us rotate,” responded Lena. “It is difficult to lead during the latter part of your pregnancy.”
“I agree. For the last several weeks, I usually limit my exercising to swimming or walking in the pool.”
“That works,” replied Lena. “Tai Chi can be done in the pool.”
“Hadn’t thought of that.”
“Are there volley ball games?” asked Susan.
“Yes. I think they are mostly pickup games rather than being scheduled. Jackie would know.”
“Not that I have any experience, it seems to me that a volley ball game or a Tai Chi session in the pool wouldn’t be too strenuous during the latter part of pregnancy.”
“Hmm ... hadn’t thought of that but it is an interesting idea. It certainly wouldn’t be as boring as walking in the pool.”
“I think I’ll set up a volley ball game in the pool,” added Crystal.
“How would you do that?” queried Susan.
“Essentially discuss it with Jackie. She would post a notice noting a time.”
“Besides monitoring our exercising, she schedules group activities,” added Lena. “There is an upcoming events board between the entrances.”
“Thanks. I’ll be sure to check it out tomorrow.”
As they were leaving the dining room they saw Marcy wave to them. They stopped and waited for her to join them. Marcy said, “Can I entice you all into assisting me this afternoon?”
“Sorry, I have a commitment,” responded Lena.
“What’s up?” inquired Crystal.
“I need some fresh eyes to look over some code. I have an elusive error. I suspect it is punctuation but...”
“Sure I can help.”
Susan added, “I may be able to help. What language?”
“Great, C++ but there are some assembly language segments.”
“I know how that works. Where do you want to do this?”
“My suite.” After a moment she added, “Oops, E204.”
With a smile Lena said, “You all have fun. See you later.”
1st Wednesday in Chester
The airplane carrying Jan, Jen, and Jo touched down at the Sidsville airport right at the tail end of dusk. It taxied to the ramp in front of the hangar, then shut down one engine. Frank exited the cockpit and said, “Well we are here. Hope you enjoyed the flight.”
“Yes,” replied Jen. “This trip was much quicker than the last time.”
“We were fortunate to have a very good tail wind so we arrived before dark. While we could have landed after dark and no lights, it is something we try to avoid. It is something, we couldn’t do before we were able to the link the GPS to the plane’s instruments. Even so it is a little dicey.”
While he was talking, he opened the cabin door and lowered the steps. Looking back at the cabin, “Thanks for straightening up the cabin.”
“You’re welcome,” replied Jo.
“Be sure to take all of your gear.”
“We’ve checked,” responded Jen.
“We will wait a few minutes to be sure your vehicle is okay.”
“Thanks,” said Jan. “Wish you all a safe journey.”
Jan, Jen, and Jo walked quickly toward where their SUV was parked. While they were walking, they heard the jet’s engine restart.
When they were nearly to their vehicle, Jan pressed the remote start. They smiled on hearing the vehicle start. Stowing their gear in the back, Jo opened the gate while the others entered the vehicle.
As soon as the pilots saw their vehicle pull on to the ramp, they began taxing. With the SUV out on the ramp, Jo returned the gate to its original position then entered the vehicle. They were pulling on to the exit road when the jet began its take off. During all of this neither had their lights on.
During the drive toward Chester, they discussed what needed to be done before they could move to Lone Pine. On reaching Chester Jan said, “I am hungry, so let’s stop someplace.”
“Good idea,” replied Jo. “I think the refrigerator is pretty bare. One of us should go the grocery store tomorrow.”
“I’ll go,” responded Jen. “I plan on getting just enough to cover breakfast and dinner for a week. Agree?”
“Yes,” replied both.
Jo added, “Well we typically eat our lunches in town anyway.”
“When we get home, we should go over the list of tasks that need to be completed.”
“Think we missed something?”
“Most likely. Hopefully, it will not be significant.”
“Before we do that we need to go over the security logs.”
1st Thursday in Chester
It was a little after 8 AM when Jan, Jen, and Jo entered Castle Security office.
Their office manager, Brandy, said, “Good morning. Glad you are back.”
“Good morning,” they replied.
“Were there any issues while we were gone?” inquired Jan.
“Not really. Guess you heard about the condo explosion.”
“Yes. The news was a little unsettling since we spent Friday night in the building. Did you get the information on what we found and how it was corrected along with time and materials?”
“Yes. I mailed a bill to them yesterday. They called Monday morning to thank us. Is there billing information for the days you were all gone?”
“No. That wasn’t done as a Castle Security job. Anything else?”
“The Chester police called. They wanted to know why we had two vehicles in the condo garage overnight. I told them you were working on a 2nd floor condo’s security system. They indicated that a detective would be coming by for an interview.”
“Fine. We left the building early Saturday morning so I am not sure how much help we will be. I believe it was close to 8 AM when we left the condo’s garage.”
“Well from what I hear, they aren’t sure whether the owner is dead or not. The two bodies were found but neither were the owner. By the way that hasn’t been released yet. The other oddity is that most of the contents of her bedroom and office were essentially vaporized. The desk and PC are a lump of metal and plastic. So with that information, I think it was a hit.”
“Well based on what you’ve said they’ve found,” responded Jen, “I’d agree with your conclusion.”
“Brandy, I am impressed by your ability to gather that kind of information.”
“Well, stuff like that doesn’t occur here very frequently so people like to talk. Especially in bars where off duty police hang out.”
“Yea that I would be believable if I didn’t know that your partner is a forensic technician. By the way, how does he like his new position?”
“He likes it.”
“Where do we stand with the job schedule?”
“Well since I wasn’t sure when you all would be back, all the jobs this week were assigned to our subcontractors. As much as we use them, they could probably work for us full time. Based on comments they’ve made, they would be quite receptive to doing that. Some work scheduled for this week has been shifted to next week.”
“Let’s go over the work schedule,” replied Jan. “Since we are back, we could do some of it.”
It was just after lunch when Brandy saw the police car park in front of their building.
“Good afternoon, I am Detective Forrester and this is Detective Wilson. Are the technicians who were at the condo last Saturday available?”
“They should be back from lunch in a few minutes,” responded Brandy.
“While we wait, can you tell us why they were there overnight?”
“We provide and support security systems for several of the condo owners. They were at a 2nd floor condo on Friday to determine the cause of an intermittent system malfunction. They also checked a system on the 8th floor Friday evening as the owner had some questions regarding theirs.”
“Which condo on the 8th floor?”
After pulling the work order, she said, “810.”
“Do they have access to the condos where your systems are installed?”
“Yes. When we do, it is always with advance permission and the system log notes the access.”
Just then Jan, Jen, and Jo entered the office. Jan said, “Good afternoon gentlemen. How can we help you?”
“I am Detective Forrester and with me is Detective Wilson. We have some questions regarding your presence at the condo where there was an explosion.”
“Fine.”
“Your names?”
“I am Janice McFall,” replied Jan.
“I am Jennifer Arnold,” said Jen.
“I am Joyce McEvey,” said Jo.
“Based on the parking garage security system you were there from 1:35 PM Friday until 8:15 AM Saturday.”
“That sounds about right,” replied Jan.
“That seems like a long time for a service call.”
“It was unusually long. Since the owner was going to be away for a week, we decide work on the problem until it was solved. Most of the malfunctions occurred at night and were intermittent.”
“Were you successful?”
“Yes. It turned out to be a syntax error in a portion of the code that was seldom invoked.”
“Brandy, indicated that you visited condo 810 Friday evening.”
“Yes. Susan Watt asked us to check her system the next time we were in the building. When she learnt that we would be in the building Friday, she asked if we could visit her Friday evening. We arrived before she did and let ourselves in. By the time she arrived we had checked the system. After answering her questions, we departed.”
“Each time you moved around the condo you had a large crate with you.”
“Actually, we had two crates. They contained our tools. We find carrying them that way much more efficient as it saves a lot of time going back and forth to the truck.”
“Did Ms Watt comment about her plans for Saturday?”
“I don’t believe so,” responded Jen with Jan and Jo nodding in agreement.
Detective Wilson said, “Did you notice anything unusual either while you were at the condo?”
“No,” replied Jo. “When we arrived Friday the garage was nearly empty, like it usually is when we are there during the day. Saturday morning, it was nearly full, well at least on the level we were on.”
“How about on the street when you left?”
“Nothing odd,” responded Jan. “Why?”
