18th Saturday – AT Ranch
When Susan woke up, it took her a moment to remember where she was. She smiled as she remembered her time yesterday with Cass and Liam. Her thoughts were interrupted as she realized there were several things needing her attention. She lightly kissed Liam’s neck before easing out of bed. She picked up the breast pump and a bottle then went to the bathroom. After using the toilet, she sat on a small bench. She set up the breast pumps and began letting her milk down. It wasn’t long after she started, when Cass came into the bathroom and said, “Good, morning.”
“Good morning. I hope I didn’t wake you.”
As Cass sat on the toilet she replied, “I don’t think so. Liam appears to be still asleep, but with us no longer there I suspect he will soon be up. In a moment, I will go make coffee.”
“Great. I shouldn’t be much longer. I plan to shower when we come back from Tai Chi.”
“Suits, me.”
“Good morning,” said Liam as he entered the bathroom. “What’s the plan?”
Smiling Cass said, “A cup of coffee, then slip on some clothes. After Tai Chi, we can shower and dress for the day. After that, how about a big breakfast?”
“That works,” responded Liam as he headed toward his room.
When Susan finished letting her milk down, she transferred the milk to the storage container. She noted the date and time on the bottle then set it aside. As she was cleaning the cups of the breast pump, Cass brought her a cup of coffee. “Thanks,” noted Susan as she took the cup then took a sip.
Cass said, “I’ll put your milk in the refrigerator.”
“Thanks.”
A short time later Susan, Cass, and Liam entered the meeting hall. Susan smiled seeing that Rylee and Ciara had the room arranged. Seeing them enter, Rylee and Ciara came toward them. After exchanging greetings Rylee said to Susan, “The CD player is connected to the room’s sound system. It has a remote control. With that flexibility, we’ve moved the spot for the leader to a better location.”
“Looks good. Is this the usual crowd?”
Ciara responded, “Yes, but there will likely be several more arrive as we begin. Well that is the way its been.”
“Rylee would you join me in leading this morning?”
After a momentary hesitation, she smiled and said, “Sure.”
When the clock indicated 6 AM, Ciara rang a chime, then Susan said, “Good morning.”
Many responded, “Good morning.”
“Please, take your positions as we will begin in just a moment.” When she saw everyone had found a position and were looking toward her. She nodded to Rylee and they shifted to the initial form. When the music started, they began leading the group through the sequence of forms. Most of Rylee’s attention was focused on Susan. Susan focused on doing the forms correctly, as she watched the participants. She was interested in how well they were doing. When the music ended, Rylee and Susan bowed to the group.
Susan said, “From what I could see you are doing great considering you’ve only been doing this for a week. Don’t be reluctant to stretch to full extension. Doing so will be of more benefit to you. Any general questions before we go?”
A woman said, “Could you show us the positions one at a time like you did last week with us following along?”
“Sure. Let’s start off that way tomorrow.”
“Thank you.”
“Any others?” After a moment of hearing none Susan said, “Have a great day.” Turning to Rylee she said, “You are doing great.”
“When I watched you this morning and yesterday morning, I noticed some things I wasn’t doing quite like you do them. So both days, I’ve made some adjustments.”
“Well as I said, I think you are doing great. Even though I’ve done this for a long time, I don’t always do them perfectly. Now what do we need to do to restore the rooms layout.”
Ciara responded, “Arrangements have been made to take care of that.” As she said that the participants began restoring the room to its normal layout. As they were doing that Ciara continued, “I was wondering if there was some one close by who could teach us ways we could defend ourselves.”
“Well I know a little of how to do that but not well enough to teach. If I find someone who can teach self defense, I’ll let you know.”
As they walked back to the house, Liam said, “That was interesting.”
“Should I pursue it?” inquired Susan. “I know several that I can ask about instructors. I presume this would be a short course.”
Cass said, “Perhaps we should raise this idea with Nituna, Brianna, and Darby first.”
“So are you seeing this as a female issue?” responded Liam. “There may be broader interest than that. Also, some of those who’ve been in service may be interested.”
“True,” responded Cass. “Why don’t I discuss this with my sister trustees first? My inclination is to initially treat this as a female issue, then broaden it if there is interest.”
Susan added, “In the meantime, I will look for potential instructors. This may be something that would interest the residents at Lone Pine.”
As they were eating breakfast Cass said, “What would you all think of taking a horseback ride with a picnic lunch?”
“That would be a nice way to relax,” responded Liam. “I am sure we have a horse Susan would enjoy riding.”
“I am game,” noted Susan with a smile. “I am not sure how I went all these years without missing riding horses.” After a moment she said, “You’ve indicated that I could setup a work area in your office area.”
Before she could say more, Liam said with a smile, “When ever you are ready, to do so. We’ve been waiting for you to indicate your intention.”
Susan added, “Cause you thought I might see it as being pushy.”
“Well...,” responded Cass.
“Well, I looked over the office area yesterday. I think we can add an L-shaped workstation for me without too much effort. As to computer equipment, it would be similar to what I have at Lone Pine.”
“We are done eating so let’s clean up then take a look,” responded Cass.
In the office, Cass said, “Now what did you have in mind? How big is this workstation?”
“I thought placing the workstation in this corner of the room would be best. By doing that we only need to move the bookcase. To me that position is optimal, as there wouldn’t be any reflections from the window.”
“What does the workstation look like?” inquired Liam.
Susan turned on her laptop then after a moment said, “Like this.”
Cass and Liam looked at the image then looked at each other, Cass then said, “Liam, why don’t we replace ours with one like that?”
Liam looked around the room, then said, “We could do that as there are some things in here that we don’t use. Let’s make a drawing to make sure we aren’t misjudging the space.”
After they had roughed out a layout Cass said, “So we are in agreement two desks like this one and the one Susan chose.”
“Yes,” said Liam.
Smiling Susan said, “If you all are happy with them, then I will order them now. I’ll send Tracey an email asking her to order me another computer setup equal to or better than my current one. I do need a shipping address for here.”
Cass said, “Use this,” as she handed Susan a card.
Both Cass and Liam had surprised expressions as they watched Susan enter an order for the desks without any hesitation. Susan then sent Tracey an email, “I need to buy a computer system like the one at Lone Pine to use at the AT Ranch. If you would send me the order details, I can order it.” As she completed the email to Tracey she received acknowledgement for the desk order.
After receiving the desk order acknowledgement, Susan noticed surprised expressions on Cass and Liam’s faces. After a moment Liam asked, “What is our share?”
“Nothing. Consider them a gift.”
“Are you sure?” responded Cass.
“Definitely. Although that raises another issue regarding our relationship. Money and related issues.”
“True,” responded Liam. “Back to the computer. Your request to Tracey was interesting.” Cass chuckled as she had seen Susan’s setup.
“Well,” replied Susan, “At Lone Pine I have a computer system that has high end graphics with maximum memory and maximum system memory, a curved wide screen monitor, touch pad, UPS, and external drives.”
“Oh.”
“Oops, I forgot to order a chair,” noted Susan as she turned back to her laptop. A few keystrokes later, she had an order placed and confirmed for the chair. Turning back to Cass and Liam, she said with a smile, “Shall we go horseback riding?”
Before they could respond Susan’s email chimed. It was from Tracey saying, “I will order it on Monday and I need an address for AT Ranch. Hope you are relaxing and enjoying the weekend. Sláinte.” Susan replied sending her the address.
Cass and Liam looked at each other and grinned, then Cass said, “Give me a few minutes to put together our lunches.”
“Well I need to dress for horseback riding,” responded Susan.
Liam said, “When Susan is ready, we’ll go saddle the horses then come back over here.”
“Suits me,” responded Cass and Susan.
As Susan was changing to her riding skirt and leggings, she thought, “Sure glad I brought my riding stuff. Ah ... another set of items I need to keep here.”
As they rode away from the house, they headed north. They wandered around the area north of the ranch settlement. As they did, they pointed out a number of distinguishing features and landmarks. This included several beautiful scenic views. They stopped for lunch at a scenic overlook. Besides enjoying their time together and the scenic views, they discussed the practical aspects of their deepening relationship.
On entering the barn Cathal saw them, waved then came toward them. They had just dismounted when he reached them. Seeing the horse Susan was riding, he said, “You let her ride that horse.”
Susan with a puzzled expression said, “Is something wrong with this horse? She responded just fine for me and seemed to be fine.”
Cathal took a deep breathe and slowly let it out. He then noted, “Well, very few can ride her without there being issues.” He paused then looking a little embarrassed said, “Sorry. I should have remembered the stories about you and Dante.” Cass and Liam were sort of behind him and smiling. “Don’t be surprised if you hear some comments about you riding this horse.”
Smiling Susan offered, “Well she responded to my directions just fine. Not sure I am saying this correctly, but she needs firm but gentle guidance.”
“Thank you. I’ll remember that. How was your ride?”
“Excellent cause I had fantastic company! There were times I had the sensation of being watched.”
“I did as well,” added Liam. “But, the sensation wasn’t strong or threatening.”
“Others have noted similar sensations in that area,” noted Cathal. “Strange.”
“Not really,” responded Cass. “Many of the elders have told stories of that area that fits with being watched or monitored. No substance, just sensations you seldom share because of lack of substance.”
After taking care of their horses, they were walking back to the house when Cass said, “Since it is so late, let’s go out to dinner.”
Susan shrugged. Liam said, “What did you have in mind?”
“How about the diner north of here? The food is good and the atmosphere is relaxed and very casual. So all we need to do is freshen up a bit, then we can leave.”
“Dressed as we are?” queried Susan.
“Yes,” replied Cass.
As they were traveling to the diner Cass said, “The customers will likely all be locals. If you hear strange words, they are likely speaking Apsaálooke. Don’t be reluctant to admit you don’t understand. Many of Apsaálooke don’t know the language.”
When they reached the diner, there were numerous pickups in the parking lot and several horses tethered to a rail near the entrance. The diner was larger than Susan expected. Nearby was a large two story house with a large barn a short distance behind it. On entering the diner, there was nary a pause in the noise. Cass guided them to an open table. A young man at a nearby table said loudly, “That table is reserved.”
“It was,” replied Liam as he turned to look at the young man.
The young man bristled, then softly muttered something under his breath. A few moments later a waitress came to the table, she said, “Good evening, Liam, Cass,” and nodded toward Susan.
“Good to see you,” said Cass. “With us is Susan, a very close friend.”
“Ah, welcome Susan. What would you all like to start with?”
Cass said, “How about three Guinness with chips and dip?”
“Thank you. Oh, just so you are aware, there was supposed to be a reserved sign on this table. However, it is well past the reservation time.”
“Thank you for the warning.”
They were about halfway through their beers when Susan noticed a group enter. The way they were dressed caused them to stand out. The noise in the room decreased as other patrons noticed them. The group consisted of two well dressed women and four men wearing suits. One of the women said something softly. One man replied, “The food here is great. They’re supposed to have a table reserved for us.”
Susan said softly to Cass and Liam, “I suspect that is the group who reserved this table. The men are carrying.”
Liam responded softly, “So is most of the room.”
The man at the entrance saw the waitress and hollered, “Hey, where is our reserved table?”
The room roared with laughter. Then the waitress said firmly, “That was for an hour ago.”
“So what, we are here,” he responded, then demanded, “Now where is the table I reserved.” Looking around he saw Cass, Susan, and Liam sitting at one of the larger round tables. “Well we’ll just take this one.” With that he led his group toward the table. Before he could get there, three wranglers slid into the other chairs with their drinks in hand.
When the group reached the table, the man loudly said, “You all need to move somewhere else this is our table.”
The three wranglers looked around at the others sitting at the table. One of the wranglers looked at the man and said, “This table is full up. Find another.”
Ignoring how quiet the diner had become the man demanded, “Leave this table, or you will regret it.”
Susan said, “All you need to do is ask politely.”
Someone in the back of the room hollered, “He doesn’t know how!”
The room roared with laughter. The man turned red veins bulged on he head. Susan nodded to the others as she lifted her glass. With that they all got up and moved away. Cass, Susan, Liam, and one of the wranglers went to an empty table. The other two wranglers joined those at the bar.
Cass and Liam struck up a conversation with the wrangler. They learnt his name was Lance. While they were talking Susan sent Steve and Tracey, asking if they could identify the individual in the image. About the time, their dinner arrived Susan’s phone chimed. It was from Steve and read, “Tread carefully. A politician with unsavory connections. Attached is some info.” As Susan scanned through the attachment, she got an idea. While they were waiting for dessert, she asked Lance, “Do you have your friend’s cell numbers?” He gave her a puzzled look, she added, “I have discovered some information they might like to see.” He smiled noting the implication then wrote several numbers on a napkin then handed it to Susan.
She took the numbers then quickly made some entries into her phone. They were part way through their dessert when Lance’s phone chimed. When he looked at it he had a puzzled expression. He then heard Susan, Cass, and Liam’s phone chime. Susan looked at hers for a few moments then said, “Interesting. I’ll bet his constituents didn’t know that.”
As they finished their dessert and coffee, they could hear other phones ping or chime indicating a new message. It wasn’t long before many in the diner were either staring at the politician or commenting on the document they had read. Compared to earlier, the diner was quiet as now there were only quiet conversations. The group with the politician never noticed the change in atmosphere.
Liam paid the check. As they were preparing to leave, they told Lance they enjoyed his company. Liam started to suggest seeking work at AT Ranch, but hesitated. As it stood now, he didn’t think any one there knew who they were, which might be a good thing.
As they walked to the truck Cass said, “What did you do?”
“Asked a friend if he knew who that obnoxious person was? I was surprised by how quickly I received a response.”
Liam said, “I wonder if anyone will open the can of worms. I suspect Lance has an idea of how the initial text came about.”
“I must say being around you can be interesting in unexpected ways,” noted Cass with a smile.
When they reached the pickup, Susan walked around it before getting in. Both Cass and Liam gave her an odd look. Susan wrote on a piece of paper go a short distance in a direction away from home. Pull into a field when you can. Several miles down the road, Liam saw an open gate to a field and pulled in and stopped. When they looked at her, she held her fingers to her lips then motioned them to follow her. She exited the pickup and they followed her for a short distance. Susan gestured at the scenery prompting them to face away from the truck. She then softly said, “There is some sort of transmitter on the pickup. Do you have trackers on the ranch vehicles?”
“Not on the pickups,” responded Liam. “Our four wheelers have a gps transmitter. I’ll get a flashlight and check the easy to reach places.” When he came back he said, “I almost missed it. There is one attached to the corner of the rear window.”
“So audio and maybe gps. Is there a ravine near here where we can leave it?”
“Yes, a little further along.” After a moment, he added, “I like that idea.”
As they drove to the ravine, they discussed their dinner and their afternoon ride. At the ravine, Susan pulled the tracker off the window. She then walked out onto the bridge. She screamed as she threw the bug out into the ravine. Back at the pickup, she took out her detector and walked around the pickup. When she sensed none, she said, “Well let’s go home. Do we need to pass the diner?”
“Not really,” responded Liam as they started down the road.
It was quiet in the truck. Each of them were reviewing what happened at the diner. All three thought it was odd that the three wranglers sat down at their table when the man started to make a scene. Susan wondered if she had made an error asking Lance for the phone numbers. All three wondered when the tracker had been placed on the pickup. All three were hesitant to say anything in the pickup.
Susan broke the silence by saying, “The dinner was very good. Nice choice Liam.”
“Well it was the most interesting time I’ve ever had there.” They all chuckled.
“I wouldn’t mind going back there. I thought for the most part it had a quiet down to earth atmosphere with excellent food.”
“It does,” added Cass.
When they were back at the house, Liam called Cathal and asked him to come over for a few minutes. When Cathal arrived Cass offered him a cup of coffee. Liam then gave him a thumbnail sketch of what happened at the diner and had found when they left. The group concluded that the tracker was likely placed on the pickup some time in the past. Considering that, Liam decided to invite Jason, Allen, and Brian over.
After Liam had again shared the incident and finding the tracker, everyone was quiet as they considered the information. After a bit, Brian asked, “Which pickup did you use?”
On hearing which one, Brian frowned. After a moment he said, “I use that one most of the time. Do you know the characteristics of the tracker?”
“I don’t.”
“Well, I think I can find out what is available,” offered Susan. “However, unfortunately I didn’t look for any identifying marks.”
Looking at Brian, Jason said, “What are you thinking?”
“Well we’ve lost several bids in the last few weeks. The odd part is that they were accepted then withdrawn. The customer indicated that another bidder came back with one lower than ours. It has happened before but it was quite rare. If some one heard me when I was in the truck then that may be the reason. We need to check the others vehicles we take off site.”
Susan said, “I would suggest all of them.”
“So who was this rude guy at the diner?” enquired Jason.
Susan opened her phone, opened the document and handed it to Jason. He was part way through when he said, “Holy cow. Is this real?”
“It is what is known by some. Likely valid but lacking hard proof.”
“May I,” as he glanced at the others. Susan shrugged. Brian and Allen had the same reaction to the document as Jason.
After a bit with a worried expression Jason said, “Aren’t you at risk?”
“Well I was one of the recipients. I know of five others. I am not sure who the sender was, and I have no inclination to find out. Based on what happened in the diner, I suspect some who received it will share it with others.”
Allen said, “I find it interesting that he took a group there. He does not like indigenous people, and they are the primary customer of the diner. I wonder who was with him.”
“Two of the six were security,” responded Susan. She smiled as she saw the shocked expressions. Liam and Cass nodded in agreement.
“I think you will enjoy working with Cian and Saoirse,” noted Cathal with a smile as he changed the topic
Susan just smiled, “I am looking forward to it.”
“It’s late,” said Jason, “so if there is nothing else I think I’ll head home.” Allen, Brian, and Cathal nodded in agreement. Soon it was only Susan, Liam and Cass sitting on the couch. The house was very quiet.
They sat there holding hands just enjoying their time together. Eventually Liam said, “You have some interesting talents.”
Susan laughed then said, “I guess some of my friends talents rubbed off on me.”
“Steve and Tracey?”
“No. The three from college. Two were forensic accountants, the other was a tracker. Our chats were quite interesting. Some of the things, we shared actually helped improve my data analysis skills. Their stories made me a bit more cautious about my security. Thank you as you brought up an interesting point I hadn’t taken into account. Now considering their field of activity, it could be they were the target rather than their friend who had been delayed and wasn’t with them.” Seeing the puzzled expressions. “Steve believes the vehicle my friends were in and several others were caught up in someones misadventure. Perhaps it only appeared to be a misadventure and my friends were the target. I am here cause Steve’s information indicated that I was the target. Now according to legal documents, all four of the college roommates are deceased.”
Cass and Liam sat looking at Susan for several minutes as they sorted through what they heard. After a moment Cass said, “I gather you knew them in college.” Susan smiled. “Sorry to hear of their passing.” Liam nodded in agreement then hugged Susan.
Susan thought, “I think they realize that there is more to my past than I’ve explicitly shared. I hope it is enough.”
After a few moments, Susan said, “I like sitting here cuddling with you. It might be more fun in bed with a few less clothes.”
“A grand suggestion,” responded Cass. She immediately stood up and pulled on her two loves encouraging them to move.
18th Sunday – AT Ranch – Third week of June
