17th Thursday – Lone Pine -
Susan was making coffee when she heard tapping on the door. Smiling she went to open the door to let Lori in. Susan said, “Good morning. Coffee will be ready by the time we finish letting our milk down.”
“Good,” replied Lori sleepily. “I could use some as this is the earliest I’ve been up in a long time.”
Now that they sort of had a routine, it didn’t take them nearly as long to setup the breast pumps and begin letting their milk down. Lori said, “I like the codes you set up for the units, it makes the comparisons easier.”
“Well after the discussion at dinner, I suspect we should evaluate more than these three. I am thinking of writing up our evaluation for these three after breakfast. Does that work for you?”
“It should be if we don’t take too long.”
“It shouldn’t as I see it as just combining our comments.”
By the time they finished, the coffee was ready, so they sipped coffee as they cleaned the breast pumps. They finished just in time to leave for Tai Chi.
As the group was dispersing after Tai Chi, Lori said to Susan, “I’ll see you at breakfast.”
“Great. See you there. Now, I am off to the swimming pool.”
As Susan walked to the pool, Lena joined her and said, “So how was the evaluation?”
“Well simply put all three are better than what we have. As to the next step, I think we need to look at several more. Also, we probably should have them evaluated by several more residents. To me those are decisions for Nancy to make.”
“Well I am interested. I suspect Caitlin and Enola are and likely Marcy and Crystal.”
“Okay. However, I am not planning on overseeing the evaluation. Don’t say anything till I meet with Nancy.”
With a smile Lena said, “Toot. Toot.” In response Susan bumped Lena with her shoulder. It was hard enough for Jackie to give her whistle a soft tweet. Which was likely due to them being in the swimming area.
Later in Susan’s suite, Lori and her reviewed their ratings of the three breast pumps. Susan said, “The group we were with at dinner suggested a broader evaluation. While not looking for more to do I think it was a good idea. I am sure Nancy will be in favor of doing that. So I suspect I may be drafted in coordinating it. If so, do you have time to assist me?”
“I think so, I would have to clear it with Kim and Madeline. I can’t see them objecting. What do you see as my role?”
Smiling Susan replied, “Well as much as you desire.” Her comment caused in Lori having a shocked expression. “Seriously, I think, helping me in selecting a few more, order them, checking them out and in, and collecting the evaluations. To me those should fit in with your current tasks. If you have time you are welcome to assist me with reviewing the evaluations.”
After a moment Lori replied, “That ought to work. I can use the business system to track the loaners like I do now. I don’t see Madeline or Kim objecting, since the results benefit all the residents.” She glanced at the clock then added, “It is almost time to open the shop. So let me know what Nancy decides.”
“I will,” responded Susan then gave Lori a hug. “Thanks.”
Susan went to fill her coffee cup, then returned to the computer. She carefully reviewed the evaluation report they had just completed. When she finished, she smiled and printed three copies. Then looking at the time, she decided to check on Dante, then visit Nancy.
Susan was returning from the temporary stable when she saw Patricia wave. She shifted to walk toward her. When she was near Patricia she said, “Good morning.”
“Good morning. Thought you would like to know that it is likely the arena will be completed tomorrow. If not then on Saturday. With its completion, there will be a small reduction in work force. I’ll let the kitchen know Friday afternoon.”
“That is good news. I will be gone tomorrow afternoon and returning Monday morning. Lena will be here during that time. I’ll let her know about the arena.”
“Well have an enjoyable weekend.”
“Thanks. You as well.”
After picking up copies of the breast pump evaluation and the bottles of milk, Susan headed for the Clinic to see Nancy. On entering the Clinic, she was surprised by how quiet it was. She stood at the entrance for a few moments then heard voices toward where the babies stayed. Walking back there, she found several babies being fed. Nancy and Rose were checking a baby. Sensing her presence, Nancy looked up then said, “Good morning, Susan. I’ll be with you in a moment.”
“Fine. I’m in no hurry. I have the initial breast pump evaluations.”
“Great.”
“I have the milk we collected with me. Where should I put it?”
Nancy responded with a raised eyebrow, “In the refrigerator by my office, there is a shelf for it.
When Nancy finished with the babies, she walked with Susan to her office. She said, “I’m interested in a cup of coffee. Do you want one?”
“Sure,” replied Susan. A few moments later she was taking a sip. After a moment she noted, “This has a very good flavor. It reminds me of the coffee Madeline has in her office.”
Smiling Nancy said as she waited for her cup, “It should be as it is the same brand.”
When Nancy sat down, Susan laid the summary of their evaluations on her desk. “All three pumps are significantly better than what we currently have. I did overlook ordering a manual unit to evaluate. So all three of these are powered. One is wearable and battery powered. With the others your movements are sort of limited due to the power cord. From my perspective, using those you could easily sit at a desk while doing normal tasks. All three are more comfortable to use than what we have now and I think considerably easier to clean.”
Nancy read through the report then said, “So should we get a dozen or so of the two you all liked?”
“That would be an improvement. However at the risk of making more work for myself, the evaluation probably should be broadened. The evaluation came up at dinner. All those at the table wanted to try the new units. They were pleased to hear that the old pumps would soon be replaced.”
“I am not surprised. I’ve looked at what is available, but it has been a while. So what is your suggestion on how to proceed? I will say now that I would prefer for you to over see the evaluations.”
Smiling Susan responded, “I suspected you would ask. I’ve drafted Lori to assist. I see her as handling the portion where interaction with the participants is needed. This is primarily because of her role here. As to what to order. I think three more of the two preferred units. Two manual units of different brands. Four more powered units of different brands. Say two battery powered and two needing to be plugged in. While it seems a lot, I see us continuing the use the two we’ve tested and liked. Once we’ve tested more units, I would suggest buying at least 25 units or so. With most being battery powered.” Seeing Nancy’s expression change, “That is a guess. I don’t know how many we currently have. Another consideration is that we are more active than in the past, so perceptively their might be a greater need.”
“Good point. Actually, I am not sure how many we have now.”
“Neither am I. Apparently, there were sufficient number as I didn’t hear any comments when we were assisting the two ranches.”
“I’ll check. I suspect Rose or Marie know as they usually deal with those items.”
“So the procedure is to bring the milk here when collected using a breast pump.”
“Yes. It needs constant refrigeration once collected. The bottles are to be labeled with the date, time collected, and source.”
“I noticed that. So shall I proceed?”
“At the moment figure out the others you want to purchase for evaluation. I need to discuss this with Madeline, before we order them. Mostly to keep her informed.” Susan chuckled, causing Nancy to raise an eyebrow.
“She has teased me in a positive way about how many recent changes that have occurred here since I’ve arrived.”
“From my perspective, your presence has been very positive. Out of curiosity, what is your relationship with Cass and Liam.”
“We are still sorting that out, but we are very close. As it stands now, I will be routinely going there on Friday and returning on Monday. I am still involved with the stable operation, but Lena is the lead.”
“Has Cass said any more about the bust treatment?”
“She is still considering it. She will be here this afternoon along with Rylee, one of the ranch residents. They are staying overnight as they want to see how we do Tai Chi. After that they plan to consult with Jackie regarding exercise equipment.”
“Anything else?”
“I think, we are good. This afternoon I will look for the other breast pumps we want for the evaluation. Then wait till you give me the go ahead to purchase them.”
“Why don’t you go ahead and order three more of the two you all liked.”
“Will do.” Noting the clock she added, “Gee, it is almost lunch time.”
As Susan prepared to leave, Nancy gave her a hug then said, “Have a nice weekend.”
“You as well,” replied Susan before leaving, she picked up eight bottles for her milk. She then headed for her suite as it was time to let her milk down.
Later in the dining room, Lori joined Susan. As she sat down, she said, “So what was decided?”
Susan then gave her a brief review of her meeting with Nancy. “So order three more of the two units we preferred. This afternoon, I was planning on looking at other offerings in preparation for buying several additional units to evaluate.”
“If you want, we can do that here as I don’t expect to be very busy. Oh, I mentioned to Kim that I may be assisting you with a project, but that I didn’t expect it to interfere with my work. She was fine with me assisting you.”
It was a little after 4 when Kim came into the Sundry shop and said to Susan, “I thought you might be here when you didn’t answer your phone. Cass and Rylee will be here in a few moments. Well I think it is them as the truck is from the AT Ranch. The suite they are using is still set to your hand, so you can set them up with access.”
“Thanks. I’ll be right out.”
Lori said, “I’ll list the ones we decided to evaluate and send it to you. I will also see if there is more detailed information on each of them. Depending on the time, I may put together a preliminary evaluation questionnaire for the participants to fill out.”
“Thanks.” She gave Lori a hug and peck on the cheek before heading for the entrance.
At the entrance when Susan saw the truck approaching, she exited the building. Once they exchanged greetings, Cass inquired, “Is it okay to leave the truck here?”
“I believe so, but we can check with Kim when we get inside,” responded Susan. Before walking with Susan to the building, Cass and Rylee retrieved their overnight bags from the truck. Inside Susan led them to Madeline’s office. When Madeline saw them she said, “Cass, it is good to see you again.”
“Greetings,” responded Cass then added, “With me is Rylee. We came to see a Tai Chi session and the exercise equipment you have.”
“Rylee, welcome to Lone Pine.”
“Thank you,” responded Rylee as they shook hands. “This is an interesting looking building.”
“I believe it is unique. I am sure Susan plans to give you a tour.”
Susan nodded then said, “Is it okay for them to leave their truck out front?”
“I don’t see why not.”
As they left Madeline’s office, they met Kim coming down the hall. Cass said, “Good afternoon, Kim.”
“Cass it is good to see you,” responded Kim then gave Cass a quick hug.
“Kim, with me is Rylee.”
“Welcome to Lone Pine,” responded Kim then gave her a quick hug. Her action surprised Rylee as both Cass and Susan noted by the slight change in her expression.
Susan then led Cass and Rylee down the hall to the Common area. Pausing briefly to look around, she said, “We call this the Common area. It has the shape of an octagon, with extensions off of seven of the faces. The eight face is an entrance to the gym. Now let’s take your bags to the suite you are using then I’ll show you around.”
At the suite they would be using, she opened the door to the bedroom then stepped inside. As they entered Susan smiled seeing the expression on Rylee’s face. She said, “All of our suites consist of two rooms, along with a walk-in closet and a full bath. If you need to hang up your clothes, we have time.”
Rylee looked at Cass then said, “I am good.”
“Okay, let’s exit through the lounge. As we exit, I will set the suite’s access panel to your hand. Doing that limits access to both of you and well me. Best part is we don’t need keys.”
“What if you loose power?” inquired Rylee.
“I suspect they have some sort of power cell in them. On the inside is a manual release.”
“Nice feature.”
Together they walked out to the 2nd floor Common area and over to the elevator. As they did so, Susan noted various features. When they reached the door to a room they used to let their milk down she hesitated before giving any details. She looked at Cass, with a questioning expression. Cass shrugged. “Rylee, I suppose you know that nearly all of us are lactating and you haven’t seen any babies.”
“Well sort of,” with a puzzled expression.
“Through this door is one of three rooms we have for doing that. I have no problem showing it to you if you would like to see how we accomplish letting our milk down. However, we prefer to keep the information on how we do that private. Can you do that?”
Rylee looked at Cass then with a smile responded, “Gee, you sure know how to stir up one’s curiosity. Yes, I am sure, I can.”
On entering the room, they saw Marcy and Caitlin letting their milk down. Susan said, “Good afternoon. With me are Cass and Rylee from the AT Ranch.”
Marcy and Caitlin responded, “Welcome to Lone Pine.”
“Thank you,” replied Cass and Rylee.
Susan then continued with, “As you can see, we lay down when we release our milk. The devices on their breasts are similar to the breast pumps that are widely available. What is unique is the position. The advantage is that you are comfortable and it is easy to use a laptop, read, nap or make phone calls while doing this.”
Rylee noted, “To me the only difference is that you are laying down rather than sitting as you would be when holding a baby.”
They watched for a few minutes. It wasn’t long before Caitlin finished. So they stayed and watched her complete this session.
Rylee inquired, “How often do you need to do this?”
“Usually four times a day,” replied Susan. “Some have to do it more frequently for a short time after delivering their babies. Some only need to do it two or three times a day.”
“What happens to the milk?”
“It goes to mothers who for some reason don’t produce sufficient milk. Shall we continue our tour?” On exiting the room, Susan said, “As you can see this is a Common area. It is similar to the one on the first floor. Just like the 1st floor there is access to seven halls. Each hall is identical to the hall where your suite is located, which was hall?”
After a moment Rylee replied, “Hall D.” Then after a pause added, “You didn’t say you were going to test us.”
Smiling Susan said, “Now let’s take the elevator to the basement.” On entering the elevator, she pushed the button for Sublevel 2. Then said, “The building has two levels below ground. Besides storage, they provide us with access to the garage and stable, well the new stable. Again, this knowledge is something that we like to hold close.” When they stepped out of the elevator, Susan said, “The corridor over there leads to the garage. But probably of more interest to you is this way. This is the corridor we will use to reach the stable when it is finished. Through this door on the right is where we keep our personal riding gear.” Stepping through the door, she added, “As you can see, it is sort of like a locker room. Hanging on those racks are the community jackets, coats and skirts. Questions?”
“This is nice,” said Cass. “I don’t remember seeing this the last time I was down here.”
“Well believe it our not, we only learned of what was here when we moved out of the pole barn. We all noticed the doors along the hall, but surprisingly no one had bothered to open one. Even more puzzling is that the building documentation we have just indicates an open area.
“Next stop is one level up then we need to go to my suite so I can let my milk down before dinner.” At Sublevel 1, they only stepped out of the elevator briefly. When they did Susan noted, “Our community laundry is on this level. Most of the space is storage, primarily for the kitchen.”
When they entered Susan’s suite Rylee said, “Wow,” when she saw Susan’s work area. “That is an impressive set of computer hardware.” She looked around then asked, “Do you have a room mate?”
“Nope. My situation here is unique in part cause I am not pregnant. The suites typically have two occupants. This is for the residents safety, cause pregnancy can sometimes go astray with little or no warning. Now, I need to get the breast pump. Be back in a minute. Oh, feel free to use the bathroom. There are drinks in the frig, so help yourself.”
When Susan returned to the lounge, she was only wearing her skirt and boots. She was carrying the breast pump unit that needed to be plugged in along with some wipes. After plugging in the unit, she sat down on the couch. Rylee and Cass quietly watched as Susan prepared to use the devices. When they were ready, she started the unit, then placed a cup on the front of her breast. The units suction pulled it against her breast. She then placed the other cup against the front of her other breast. By the time the second cup was in place milk could be seen dripping into the first bottle. When Susan looked up she smiled as she noted the expression on Rylee’s face.
After a moment Rylee inquired, “What does it feel like?”
“A rhythmic tugging, I guess is the best way to describe it. Not much different than someone sucking on them.” After a moment, Susan said, “So Rylee, what are your plans for the summer? I gather that you are on summer break.”
“Break started a couple of weeks ago. As to activity, working as a wrangler. Since, we started the morning exercising, I’ve been caring for the horses. Several elders are showing several of us tracking and woodsman skills. Besides that I often go out with other wranglers to check on various groups of cattle or unusual activity in an area. I find those excursions a good time to use what the elders have shown us.”
They chatted until Susan wasn’t releasing any more milk. Susan held one cup to her breast then disconnected the pump. When Rylee offered to hold it, she placed the cup in her hands. She then held the other cup and disconnected it from the pump. She shut the pump off, then said, “The next part we will do in the bathroom.”
After transferring the milk to a storage container, Susan handed them to Rylee. She said, “Would you label the container then place it in the frig?”
“Sure,” responded Rylee.
Then working together, it didn’t take them long to clean the cups so they would be ready for use later that evening. With that accomplished Susan said, “Thanks for the assistance. It is almost dinner time. Do you all need to freshen up before we go down?”
“That is probably a good idea,” responded Cass with Rylee nodding.
“Oh, before you go, I have your jacket. Just a minute let me get it.”
When Susan went to get the jacket Cass noticed Rylee’s expression. Cass said, “The jackets she wears are unusual in that they include bust support. I wore one when I spent some time with her here. I liked it, but it didn’t quite fit so we ordered one in my size. I thought it would take longer to arrive.” Just as she finished speaking Susan returned and handed it to Cass.
“Nice,” said Rylee when she saw the jacket.
“The disadvantage is that it doesn’t provide as much support as a bra does. So long term not a good choice.”
Susan smiled as she considered the information Cass had skipped over. She wondered what the consequences would be if others heard about why they needed less support.
Cass said, “We will be back in a few minutes.”
“Take your time,” responded Susan as they left for their suite.
While she waited she checked her email, and the analysis she had running. While the analysis was running with no issues, the intermediate data indicated that another run was likely. When she heard a tap on her door, she presumed it was Cass and Rylee. On the way to the door, she checked her appearance in the mirror, then opened the door. As she did, she chastised herself for not checking to see who was there. “Ready.”
“That we are,” responded Cass.
As Susan picked up glasses and cups to take to the dining room, she said, “The jacket looks good on you.”
“It is quite comfortable,” replied Cass.
Rylee seeing what Susan was picking up, said, “Here let us help you.” She then gathered the remaining dirty glasses and cups.
“Thank you.”
On entering the dining room, Rylee saw the birth announcement board which prompted a puzzle expression. Seeing her expression Susan said, “That is something we recently started doing. While currently there are a little less than fifty of us, news that someone gave birth can take several days to get around.”
After dropping off the dirty glassware, they chose a table. Shortly after sitting down a server came to the table bringing them menus, glasses of water, a basket of bread, and oil on a small plate. She said, “Good evening. I’ll stop back in a few minutes to take your order.”
Smiling Susan watched Rylee look around as she took a slice of bread and dipped it in the oil. After a moment Rylee said, “This is not what I expected, but I am not sure what I expected.”
Susan saw Lena, Caitlin, and Enola enter and look around, so she waved inviting them. After they had sat down, Susan said, “I am not sure everyone has met so,” with that she noted the names of those at the table. Shortly after that the server came to take their orders.
As they ate they talked about the activities and how close the stable was to being complete. During a lull, Caitlin asked Rylee, “From your expression, I gather that you have a few questions.”
“A few. Where are the babies?”
“In the clinic’s nursery. They will stay there until they leave to join their adoptive parents.”
“Are your meals always like this?”
Several chuckled, then Lena replied, “Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style. The variety of food selections are excellent and probably not as rich as you think. We are strongly encouraged to exercise for a number of reasons.”
