17th Monday – AT Ranch -

The alarm chirped twice before Cass, could silence it. Susan opened her eyes and smiled on seeing Cass and Liam laying beside her. Glancing at the clock again, she realized that she needed to get up. Her breasts were full and if she hurried there would be just enough time to relieve the pressure before leaving for Tai Chi. She then gave both Cass and Liam a quick kiss, then went to release her milk.

On entering the kitchen after dressing, she found Cass and Liam sipping coffee. On the table was a cup waiting for her. Cass said, “It should be cool enough.”

“Great. Thanks. I think we could have all slept longer.”

“It was a temptation,” responded Liam. “When there are things needing your attention, doing so sort of messes up the rest of the day.”

After Susan finished her coffee, she said, “So are we ready?”

With that they gathered their things and headed for the meeting hall. On seeing them, Rylee said, “I was beginning to wonder...”

“Good morning, all,” said Susan. “Wow, it looks like it is almost time to begin. So shall we arrange ourselves.” As everyone was moving into position, she inserted the CD into the player. When she looked up, she saw everyone was ready, so she pressed play. While she concentrated on doing the forms correctly, she monitored those participating. When the music ended, she bowed to the group. She said, “For only the third session, I think you all did very well. Are there any questions?”

“We all appreciate you showing us how to do this,” said Kaiden. “Can we continue our morning sessions without you leading us?”

“Definitely. The reason for having a leader who knows the forms is to guide you to taking the correct positions. Each position exercises a different groups of muscles. So failing to take the correct position, means you won’t receive full benefit. I like doing it as a group, rather than by myself. When I lived alone, I often did them following an instructor on TV or in a video. The advantage to doing it as a group is that is more fun and you are less likely to skip doing them.”

Rylee said, “If it is okay with everyone, I’ll see if I can find a video. Doing that would mean we need a larger monitor.”

“Would you keep me appraised of what you find?” asked Cass.

Smiling she responded, “Definitely. Kaiden, do you want to do this with me?”

“Sure.”

Susan said, “If there are no more questions, I’ll see you all Friday.”

Then noticing the CD player, she said, “Rylee, Ciara, would one of you keep the CD?”

Rylee and Ciara looked at each other, then Ciara said, “Rylee, can.”

Later as they were eating breakfast Susan inquired, “You mentioned going to see Slim about the saddle. Is that on for this morning? Do you want me to go with you?”

“Yes,” responded Liam. “I would like to do it this morning and would prefer that both you and Cass go with me. However, first I need to call him to make sure he is there. I suspect he will need to keep the saddle for a few days to repair it.”

Cass said, “There are several things I need to attend to this morning before I can go.”

“So would late morning work for you all if it fits Slim’s availability?” inquired Liam.

“Fine with me,” responded Susan. “This raises a question I meant to ask before. I presume you have internet access. How do I connect to it? I prefer cable but wifi will work.”

“Well we have a room we sort of use as an office. In there you can connect your laptop to the router with a cable.” Seeing Susan’s expression, he added, “I suspect our internet service is set up similar to yours. Expending the money to set it up, was one of the difficult decisions I alluded to the other day.”

“Okay. I was wondering if there was sufficient band width for me to work from here.”

Cass said, “I anticipated you would need space for a PC and monitor. It looks like we are finished, so as soon as we cleanup, I’ll show you the room. Then I need to go over to the ranch office to take care of some items.”

After taking care of the breakfast items, Cass led Susan down the hall their bedrooms were on. As she did Cass said, “The room we use is across the hall from my bedroom. When the house was built, it was noted as a bedroom. So I think there will be plenty of room for all of us.”

On entering the room, Susan was surprised by its size. She thought it was larger than her lounge at Lone Pine. “I agree there is plenty of room. Would it be okay if I ordered what I needed and had it delivered here?”

“Well of course!” she responded with a smile.

“While I am comfortable with our relationship and its growth, there are times I am a little uncertain. Then I wonder whether...”

“You are not alone in feeling that way. When that uncertainty raises its head with me, I ask my self if I am comfortable with our relationship. To me our relationship feels right and I am comfortable with you and miss you when you are not near by.”

With that they hugged and kissed. After a moment, Cass said, “Now there are some things I need to check on. So, I should be back in an hour or less. Why don’t you bring your laptop in here to work? I’ll close the front door when I leave. Only Miria, Gavin, or the children will enter without knocking.”

Susan gave Cass a kiss, then as Cass left she went to the bedroom and retrieved her laptop. She was soon connected to the internet. After initiating a secure connection, she checked on the progress of the analysis that was running. She was pleased to see it was nearly complete. Next she checked her email. One from Tracey said they had another large project for her. Lena let her know that Dante was fine. She thought about sending Madeline a note regarding Cass and Rylee staying over night but decided that doing it in person was better.

It was mid morning when they reached Slim’s shop. After exchanging greetings, they showed Slim the damage to Dante’s saddle. When Slim saw the damage, his anger was obvious. After he had better control of his anger, he said, “I have several suggestions of ways to punish who ever did this. Susan is fortunate it failed when it did. If it had happened when the horse was running, it would be a miracle if the rider wasn’t seriously injured.”

Liam inquired, “Do you have any idea on what was used? To me and several others it looks like it just slowly softened the leather causing it to loose strength.”

“Well there are several possibilities. I’ll send it out for analysis.”

Susan said, “Spend what is necessary, I’ll cover it.”

Looking at Susan, he said, “Thanks. However, this has the potential to impact my reputation, so the fee will be minimal.”

Susan firmly responded, “In that case, let us share the cost. When we find the vermin, we will extract all the expenses from them.”

Slim’s expression showed he was surprised by her tone. He simply responded, “Yes, Mam. As to your saddle, I should have it repaired by this time next week. I’ll call you when it is ready.”

“If you call Lone Pine and I don’t answer, you might let Liam or Cass know it is ready.”

Smiling he said, “That will work.”

As they were leaving Slim’s, Cass said, “It is near lunch time and there is a small restaurant a little off our route on the way back.”

“Suits me,” replied Liam.

“Well by the time we get to Lone Pine lunch will be over, so I am game. Besides, it means more time together.”

When they arrived at the restaurant, it wasn’t very busy. Cass said, “It looks like we beat the lunch crowd.”

As they were eating several customers came over and greeted Liam and Cass. In each case they introduced Susan. On recognizing her several complimented her on her quick thinking. A few wondered what caused it. Each was told that where the cinch connected to the saddle had been tampered with.

When they were back in the truck Susan inquired, “That was interesting.”

“Yes it was,” responded Cass. “Several of the compliments surprised me. Not that they weren’t deserved, but due to who made them.”

“I gather many of them live on the reservation.”

“I’d say most of those there today,” responded Liam.

As they turned into Lone Pine’s lane Susan noted, “It is nice to be coming home, but at the same time sad as I won’t be with you for a few days.”

After sharing hugs and kisses, Susan watched them for a few moments before turning to go inside. On entering she noticed that Madeline was in her office. When she approached the door, Madeline said, “Are you okay?” Then after a moment she clarified, “I heard you fell off Dante yesterday.”

Smiling she responded, “Well sort of. At the start of the cross country race, when I went to mount Dante the saddle came loose and dropped me on the ground. Miria was near by, so I asked her to take care of the saddle and blanket. I then rode Dante bare back and rejoined the race. It turned out to be a lot of fun. Well actually the whole event was a lot of fun.”

“From what I heard this morning, everyone who went had a nice time. There seemed to be a lot more activities there than was at the Bar H.”

“There was because they approach holding gatherings like that different than the Bar H does. To me the difference is due to the groups having quite different backgrounds. A Pow Wow has a special meaning to those living there, that I think I understand but I am not certain how to express it.”

“Well glad you are back.”

“Cass and Rylee are interested in our exercising regime. This weekend I acquainted them with Tai Chi. Based on how many participated all three mornings, I think they will continue. I was wondering if it would be okay for them to stay over Thursday night, so they could participate in Tai Chi with us Friday morning. They could also see the exercise equipment we use and speak to Jackie.”

“Cass has stayed over before?”

“No. She has visited us several times. She is one of the tribal leaders as those operating the ranch are a tribe. The most recent time was when she rode back with me a couple of weeks ago. As to a place to stay, the suite Miria used is still vacant.”

After several minutes Madeline responded, “I think that will be fine.”

“I’ll let Cass and Rylee know that Thursday is fine.”

“On another note, it wouldn’t surprise me if some of our residents didn’t develop a relationship with some of those they’ve met at our neighbors. So what are your plans?”

“For now I plan to stay with Cass and Liam Friday afternoon to Monday morning. The rest of the time I will be here. My involvement with Cass and Liam has little impact on our stable project. It wouldn’t surprise me to see several residents seek to join Lena in taking care of the horses. If so I will likely remain in the main building, provided that is okay.”

“Good. I am comfortable with that. Let Kim know about your use of the suite.”

“Will do.” When Susan reached Kim’s office, she said, “Kim, we will have two guests Thursday night. If the suite Miria used is available, I’d like for them to stay there. As to fees, add it to my bill.”

“Who is visiting?”

“Cass, who I think you’ve met. The other is Rylee. She is a high school student, who is interested in our exercise routine. So they will be here for dinner and breakfast.”

Back in her suite, before looking at the analysis, she thought about what items she should have at what seemed to be her second home. She soon opted for five of the special jackets with skirts and leggings. At least another pair of boots. For a PC, she decided to duplicate what Tracey had purchased for her. For casual stuff, she thought she might get a more robust laptop. On seeing it all on paper, the question of whether she was rushing into a relationship surfaced. After examining her perspective of the relationship, she conclude that she was not rushing. Her impression of Cass and Liam was that they felt the same way.

It was late in the afternoon when the chime indicated it was time to let her milk down. Quickly looking over the rough draft summarizing the analysis just completed, she was pleased by how much she had accomplished. On returning to the suite after letting her milk down, she freshened up then went to dinner.

Approaching the dining room, she noticed that the board announcing births indicated that Adrienne had delivered her babies. Entering, she saw Lena and Caitlin waving. When she reached them she said, “Good evening. How are things with you all?”

Lena responded, “Well, the roof is on the arena. They have started finishing the resident’s suites and the office area. Dante has been easy to work with, but I think he misses you. So how about you?”

“Well a data analysis completed over the weekend and today I roughed out a report for it. I enjoyed the weekend. Oh, we took the saddle to Slim to be repaired. When saw the damage and heard what happened he was livid. Liam and Slim will attempt to determine what was used to cause it to fail. As to the races, they were fun.”

“Yes, they were,” responded Caitlin. Lena nodded with a smile. “It wasn’t until after the race, that I realized what happened to you. You did recover very nicely.”

Lena added, “Best of all, when someone thinks of how well we placed, they will be very interested in stud services.” Hearing that Caitlin had a puzzled expression. Smiling Lena added, “Cause they may think that a man riding the horse would have done better. Besides I didn’t push Cedar to do better cause of what I heard of rider interaction during a race.”

“Besides starting late, that was one of the reasons I rode outside of the mob. I did it for fun and to learn more about Dante’s capabilities.”

As they were chatting Enola joined them, when there was a break in the conversation, they exchanged greetings. Enola said, “From what I am hearing you all had a good time.”

“Definitely,” replied Lena with Caitlin and Susan nodding with a smile.

As they ate dinner, the Pow Wow activities and stable construction were the main topics. They were nearly finished when Enola inquired, “So who will be living in the stable?”

Lena said, “At this time, it will be Caitlin and me. Why?”

“Working with the horses is new to me and I like it. I think I would like to be more involved, if I knew what was expected.”

“Basically, what we’ve been doing, but those living their would have that as their primary responsibility. That wouldn’t keep you from doing other work. The other thing to keep in mind is that we need to maintain two to a suite.”

When Susan returned to her suite, she called Cass. After exchanging greetings she said, “We are set for your visit on Thursday and Friday. Would it be okay to ride back with you on Friday?”

“Certainly, that is what I expected,” responded Cass.

17th Tuesday -

Susan woke before the alarm sounded, and laid there thinking about her time with Liam and Cass. While she enjoyed their time together, she wondered whether it was moving too fast. Although, when she thought of her friends she had lived with in college she could see similarities. In that case, it began as a friendship, then sharing an apartment which evolved into an intimate relationship. If she remembered correctly, they lived together for nearly a year before they became intimate. When they graduated, they wanted to continue sharing living space, but job opportunities got in the way. Even so they remained close and their intimate relationship continued. However, it wasn’t quite the same as when they lived together. Remembering their disappearance she sighed, then she remembered what she had been told at the ceremonial site.

Noticing that the alarm was about to chime, she turned it off. She quickly dressed then started the coffee so it would be ready when she returned from letting her milk down. On returning to her suite, she poured her coffee, then went to dress for Tai Chi.

When Susan walked into the gym, she heard several say, ‘Oh good, she’s back.’ The comment caused her to smile as she greeted several. Janet struck the chime, signaling them to take their position. Susan moved to the front of the group, then bowed before taking the initial form. When the music began, she began going through the forms. Today, she watched the group as they followed her movements. As she did, she related what she was seeing to what she had seen at the AT Ranch. When the music ended, she decided that the biggest difference between the groups was the smoothness in transitioning from one form to the next. She attributed that to experience.

Kendra came up to Susan and said, “Glad you are back. I am amazed by how smoothly, you transition from one form to the next.”

“Thank you. Who led while I was gone?”

“Beth on two days. I did it with Maureen one day. I think Janet is looking for at least two more. I think she likes coaching more than being the leader.”

“They’ve started a Tai Chi session at the AT Ranch similar to ours. I led them through the forms when I was there. I found it a bit challenging to maintain the pace and look for those having difficulty. So I understand why Janet and Lena like having someone lead.”

“So how do you start?”

As they were talking Janet and Lena joined them. Susan said, “The way I did it was to show them each form and encouraged them to try mimicking me. After showing them, we did the series accompanied by music. Overall I think, they did quite well. In hindsight, I think the did better than I did when I started. The third day, we just did the forms accompanied by music.”

Janet asked, “Did they enjoy it?”

“I think so. Essentially the same group participated all three days. The first day we had quite a few observers. Several indicated they were going to continue this week with out me. Many of the group are high school age or young adults. The two, who saw me doing the forms on Cass’s porch, did quite a bit of research during the week. In fact one will visit and participate with us later this week.”

“So how did it feel to be the coach and leader?”

“Well I think I was more of a leader than a coach. However, I was more attentive to how well they were following me. To me for just starting out, they all did quite well. Those I had concerns about did better the second and third days.”

Lena inquired, “Who is visiting?”

“Rylee and Cass. Besides wanting to join us for our Tai Chi session, they are interested in our exercise equipment. Now, let’s go swimming.”

When Susan returned to her suite, she checked messages. None needed an immediate response, so she went to take a shower. After showering, she put on a jacket and skirt. Entering the lounge she saw that there was enough time to check email before breakfast. She smiled on seeing messages from Liam, Cass and Miria. On opening them, she found each in their own way, noted how much they enjoyed her company over the weekend. She responded to each with a thank you and indicated she was looking forward to being with them this coming weekend. Just as she sent the messages, the chime sounded indicating it was time for breakfast.

After breakfast she stopped by the Sundry shop. Seeing Lori was busy, she went to see how the horses were doing. Approaching the temporary pasture, she saw Lena, Caitlin and Enola looking after the horses. On reaching the gate, Dante was there to meet her. She stroked his neck for a bit, and lightly scratched his chin. “How about I brush you?” When she went to get a brush, Dante followed her into the stable. As she brushed him, she thought about the things that needed to be done. She was so lost in her tasks and thoughts that she jumped when Caitlin touched her shoulder.

Caitlin jumped back and stammered, “Sorry, I didn’t mean scare you.”

“I don’t know that you scared me. I was thinking about some things.”

“We noticed when you didn’t respond when we said your name. We are heading back. Seeing the way you responded, maybe I should hang around until you are done.”

Susan looked over Dante then with a smile said, “I think I’ve accomplished this task. So if you will wait a moment while I put the brush away, I’ll walk back with you all.”

“Cool. Missed joining you for breakfast.”

“It was an interesting conversation. They seemed to know a lot about me, but I don’t think I had interacted with them previously. Well perhaps I had when I was putting the skills list together for Tracey and Steve.”

“I hear the skills list has led to a few finding more work.”

“I believe so. It has also expanded the services that Tracey and Steve offer.”

When they reached the Hall F entrance, Susan said, “I think, I’ll see if Patricia can show me around the stable.”

“So who is going to live in the stable suites?”

“Lena, for sure. I am not sure who the others will be. You could ask Lena. If caring for horses is the direction you want to go, then tell her of your interest.”

“I thought you would be moving there.”
