17th Saturday – AT Ranch -
When Susan woke up, she was laying between Cass and Liam. Looking toward the window, she could tell by how light it was that she needed to get up. At the same time, she was tempted to lay there a bit longer. She soon realized that nature was calling in several respects. As she eased out from between them, Cass and Liam woke up. Susan’s exit was delayed as Cass and Liam gave her a hug along with a kiss.
By the time, she had let her milk down Cass had a fresh cup of coffee waiting for her. When they finished their coffee, it was time to leave for Tai Chi. As they left, Susan picked up a pair of shoes and the CD. Seeing Liam’s puzzled expression she said, “When doing Tai Chi, I either wear shoes or do it bare foot. I guess you could wear boots but I haven’t tried that.”
Entering the meeting hall, Susan was surprised by the number of people already there with a few more arriving. She was pleased to see that the room had been rearranged so there was a large open space. “Good morning.”
Ciara brought over a CD player and said, “Will this do?”
“Yes, I believe so,” responded Susan as she handed her the CD. Susan looked around the room as she tried to picture a good arrangement. After a moment she said, “Ciara, let’s put it on that small tall table.” With the player on the table, they moved it near to the wall at the end of the room. After Ciara plugged it in, Susan started the CD playing the music. On hearing the first notes, she set the volume then stopped it.
Seeing it was time to start Susan said, “Good morning all.” She paused until she had their attention then continued, “Welcome to our first Tai Chi session. I understand that this is a new experience for everyone. You might be surprised, but this will be a new experience for me as usually my role is to lead or as a participant. Since I think this is new to all of you, today it will be a bit longer than normal. Now, those participating need to move so they are at least arms length away from anyone else and have a clear view of me. Those observing need to move back to give the participants room to move.”
Once she thought everyone was ready she said, “Since I believe all of you are new to this, today we will begin with me showing you the forms or positions. You are welcome to mimic my movements. To begin, we take this form.” She then showed them each form. As she did so, she gave each one a number then held it for a moment before moving on to the next. She was pleased to see those participating mimic her movements.
After the last form she said, “Very good. Now let’s try it with music. This is the normal exercise routine I do. We use music to set the pace. If you miss a form, just pick up with the next one when you can. If you are like me, it took me several times before I could complete a session without missing a form.” Sensing the group was ready, she started the CD playing then quickly moved to assume the first form as the music began. She smiled as she watched different participants mimic her movements. As she began the last form, she realized the music was ending. When the music stopped, she bowed to the group. Many bowed in return.
“From what I saw, I think you all did very well for your first time. Sure some of you missed a form or didn’t quite get the position correct. I am sure that the next time you will do better. Tomorrow, I will again show you the forms before we do them accompanied by music. Usually, we will only do the forms accompanied by music. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask, as it is likely someone else has the same question.”
Conor noted, “This was more challenging than I expected, but at the same time it seems easy.”
“Remember our goal is to stretch and relax our muscles.”
“Any others?” She looked around the group and when there was no response she said, “Have a great day.”
“Thank you,” responded many of the participants.
As Ciara retrieved the CD player, Jason approached them and inquired, “Ciara, can Susan use your player tomorrow and Monday? Next week we will acquire one for the meeting hall.”
“Sure,” she responded. “Doing so will be easy as I intend to continue participating. Now it is time for chores then breakfast.” Then she inquired of Susan, “I gather the segment with the music, is the typical exercise.”
“Yes. Since I am the leader and the instructor, I will offer advice to individuals before or after a session. For the exercises to be fully effective, the forms need to be done correctly, well as close as you can. To do that, it takes time to learn them. Based on my experience, you are never perfect with each one.”
Smiling Jason noted, “That is true for a lot of things. Well I have some tasks that need my attention. Enjoy your stay.”
“Thank you.”
Cass and Liam came over to Susan as she slipped her boots back on. Susan inquired, “So what did the observers think?”
“I think it was well received,” replied Cass. “While most watched, the few conversations I heard were on other topics. I was a bit surprised by the attendance, as I think. nearly everyone was here. You may not have noticed but some of the younger children followed along with the exercises.”
“I noticed that. It is not something I’ve seen before, but its been a long time since I’ve been around small children.”
“Well they can be quite observant which can lead to very interesting questions,” noted Liam. “Now, I am ready for breakfast.”
“Me, too,” responded both Cass and Susan.
Susan said, “I haven’t seen Miria and the children.”
“They are at the Bar-H this weekend.”
“Are Miria and Gavin still an item?”
“Yes,” responded Cass with a smile. “I believe Gavin is at the Bar-H as well.”
“He is,” added Liam with a puzzled expression. “He left shortly after Susan arrived.”
“You seem puzzled by that.”
“I am a bit.”
“Well I hope it works out for them. From the little, I’ve seen they seem to compliment each other.”
As they were finishing breakfast, Susan said, “I’ve noticed that virtually everyone I’ve met has what I know as an Irish name. I suspect most if not all of you also have a traditional Apsaálooke name. Why?”
“Very perceptive,” responded Liam. “It started a long time ago. Those operating the ranch realized that those with a European name, were more likely to be accepted by outsiders. So gradually, everyone shifted to using an Irish name. So it became traditional for us to use either depending on the circumstances. As you saw in Sheridan, it didn’t negate the attitude of some people.”
“I’ve seen similar attitude exhibited toward other ethnic groups. However, all the names I’ve heard seem to have an Irish origin.”
“From what I’ve been told, the attitude toward our people was much worse in the past. As to preferring Irish names, I believe, it goes back to how the ranch was established. Around two centuries ago, this ranch was established by an Irishman known as Clodagh Flanngáin. In doing so he developed a good relationship with the Apsaálooke. This was probably because he treated us with respect and as equals. He gave them free rein of his ranch, but ask that they avoid taking his cows. He had two wives who were tribe members. They gave him quite a few children. During this time several Irish families came to work on the ranch. Under Flanngáin’s direction the ranch grew in size to what it is today. It has prospered in that it has supported those living here and to some extent those on the reservation. While many of his wranglers were members of our tribe, not all of them were. About the time the government established the Apsaálooke reservation in Montana, he recognized the long term implications. Several times he had to fend off several attempts to take portions of the ranch. Due to this he recognized that without his presence, his family and friends would likely have a difficult time holding on to the ranch after he passed. So with the assistance of a lawyer, he established the AT Trust and transferred the ranch to it. The Trust was set up to be overseen by seven trustees. Mr. Flanngáin was one trustee and he selected six others who were members of his wive’s tribe. The be a trustee, the Trust requires them to live and work on the ranch in decision making roles. The existence of the Trust didn’t become known beyond those living here until after Mr. Flanngáin passed away. Since then there have been several attempts to have a court void the Trust. Those efforts have all failed but every so often another attempt is made. This has been by a private entity or more often by a government agency. Our successful defense may in part be due to the fact that several of the lawyers we retain are tribal members.”
“So the AT stands for Apsaálooke Trust?”
Chuckling Liam responded, “Many think that. He never said. In his communication with the initial lawyer, there are hints that it is the first letter of his mother’s name. As far as I know, no one knows for sure.
“As to the AT Trust board, it typically consists of three men and four women. When one steps down, their replacement is chosen by the remaining board members with the concurrence of those tribe members actively working on the ranch.”
“An interesting way of attempting to ensure stability and consistency.”
“From my perspective, I think it has worked pretty well. However, I wasn’t around when the Trustees faced some rather difficult situations in the past. In hindsight, I think they chose the best path forward. Although, at the time some were sufficiently upset with the decisions that they left the ranch. Some of their descendants now work for our AT Constructors, which is currently led by Brian and several others. Many often come from the reservation to events such as our community gatherings, like the one tomorrow.”
Cass inquired, “Did you grow up on a farm or a ranch?”
“Neither. I grew up in a rural area, so there were farms nearby. My experience with horses is due to me visiting a neighbor’s place. They had a large stable and boarded horses. I guess I was around middle school age when I started visiting them. At first they were a little apprehensive about my presence. I think cause I was there and helped when I could, they began letting me assist them. I liked being around them and the horses. It wasn’t long before I was taking care of the horses, riding them, and doing the other tasks around the stable. Some of the horse owners did competitive style riding, so I got to try that but never participated in events. All of my riding was more toward exercising the horses. When I was older at harvest time, I often drove a tractor or truck.
“So what happens at a Pow Wow?”
Smiling Cass replied, “It is essentially what we did at the Bar H’s barbecue. In addition there is typically traditional dancing. There maybe some friendly competitions. Those can be races, barrel racing, traditional skill competitions, or similar activities.”
They spent much of the day sharing their past experiences. It was late afternoon when Cass said, “We need to be getting ready if we are going to town for dinner.”
As they headed toward Sheridan Liam said, “I didn’t make reservations so where should we try?”
Susan said, “I’ve heard good comments about Sally’s Steakhouse.”
“How about Italian or Spanish?” inquired Cass. “I thought I saw a new one advertized.”
“Fine with me,” offered Susan.
A few moments later Cass gave Liam the address. Later as they approached the hostess Susan softly said, “This looks like a very nice place.”
The smiling hostess responded, “Thank you,” causing Susan to blush. “Did you have reservations?”
“No,” responded Cass.
“Not a problem. Follow me.” After they were seated she said, “Rosa, will be your server this evening. Water and bread will be right out.”
After the meal as they were sipping their coffee, Liam said, “Cass, I am glad you remembered the ad as the food was fantastic.”
“I agree,” added Susan. “If I can get one of their cards, I will post it on our bulletin board.”
Cass added, “Now, that is a good idea. I could put one up in the meeting hall.”
Liam noted, “It is fairly early, do we want to check out the Palace? I am not sure who is playing tonight.”
Cass looked at Susan then they both shrugged. Susan said, “Why not? If we don’t like the music, we don’t have to stay.”
Cass noted, “We could probably find a movie or program to watch at home. Since we are here, let’s check out the Palace first.”
When they arrived at the Palace, the musicians had just started playing. While they weren’t familiar with the group, they sounded pretty good so they stayed. Susan saw Anthony when they were looking for a table and waved. A waitress approached them just as they sat down. Since they had had wine with dinner, they ordered a bottle and three glasses. When the music paused Anthony and Will came over to the table and said, “Good evening, Susan.”
“Good evening,” she replied. “Anthony, Will with me are Cass and Liam O’Connell.” As they exchanged greetings, she added, “Anthony and Will work for Abernathy Equipment. Cass and Liam are from AT ranch.”
Will said, “Didn’t you all come with Susan and Kathy to rent equipment for the stable?”
Smiling Liam replied, “We did. We were impressed with the service.”
“How is the stable coming along?”
“Well the roof is on,” responded Susan. “And I think they will be putting the roof on the arena next week.”
“It sounds like they are moving right along.”
“Well I’ll be glad when it is done. How are things with you all?”
“Actually, since supplying you with equipment, we’ve had more requests than we have equipment. Right now it would be nice if we had more equipment. If we had that then we would need more employees.”
Anthony added, “However, we are doing much better than we expected to.”
Susan wondered, “So would more capital help?”
“It would, but we aren’t in a position to seek more at this time.”
“But, if you had an unsolicited offer.”
“We would be interested in learning more. I sense that you might know of someone.”
“I may. If you are agreeable, I will mention the opportunity to them. Your business and investing are not something I am familiar with. Besides caring for horses, my speciality is multi-variant data analysis.”
Grinning he quickly responded, “Interesting. You must be a math wiz. I’ll stick with equipment rental.”
Will said, “We need to get back to our table. It was nice meet you all.”
They listened to the music as they sipped their wine. While the music was danceable, they opted to just listen and watch others interacting.
Later as they were driving back Liam inquired, “Tell me if I am pushing a boundary, but it sounded to me like you were interested in investing in their business.”
“Sort of.” After a moment, she added, “Let’s save that topic for after we are home. So what did you think of the Palace?”
“It’s okay. They have some good entertainment at times, but spending the evening there can be quite expensive.”
“Well that bottle of wine was not inexpensive. I could see going through two or three in an evening plus there would likely be snacks.”
Cass said, “Do I detect a deeper interest?”
“Perhaps. I’ve wondered if Sheridan area could support a dinner theatre? Perhaps only operating three or four nights a week. The entertainment would be music, comedians, maybe a small dance floor. Food service would be like we had tonight or like one of the upscale steak houses.”
After arriving home Susan said, “How about a cup of hot tea?”
“An excellent idea,” responded Cass with Liam nodding in agreement.
With a cup of tea in hand, Susan said, “Liam’s question earlier touched on an aspect of my long term plans. I am very comfortable with our evolving relationship. I believe the business arrangement I have with Lena and the Briana Trust is long term. I like the area and considering our growing relationship, I think I will be in the area for a long while. So with that perspective and the fact I have considerable savings as well as the proceeds from the condo sale, how do I best utilize them. I indicated to Steve and Tracey a desire to address this by looking for investment opportunities locally, but not doing so visibly. They weren’t sure how to accomplish that which is why I said what I did this evening. At the moment, I think investing in Abernathy Equipment would be a good choice. Why? Good, friendly service. Another is a dinner theatre, which was an idea that occurred some time ago.”
“You said, ‘not visibly,’ which implies forming some sort of an entity to do that.”
“Good point. That is one of the issues Steve and Tracey are looking in to for me. As to Abernathy Equipment, I think, it is far enough into the construction season that additional funding would have little impact this year. However, if additional funding could be sorted out now, it would put them in a better position for next season. However, business finance is not my field so...”
“I think I understand your concerns with how to move this forward. Would it be acceptable to you for me to also look for someone with expertise in investing locally? He would likely have an Apsaálooke heritage.”
“Sure, as long as Steve and Tracey are aware. Now to be clear when you said ‘me’, I presume that included Cass.”
Laughing he responded, “Of course.”
“Now my tea is finished and I’ve let down my milk so I was thinking it would be a good time to go to bed. Time for Tai Chi will come early in the morning even so I think we have time for some cuddling or more.
Grinning Cass said, “I am all for the more aspect.”
17th Sunday – AT Ranch -
When Susan opened her eyes, she saw that it was nearly time for the alarm to sound. She carefully reached over Cass to turn it off. Cass then pulled her down for a kiss. As they separated Cass softly said, “I’ll brew some coffee while you let your milk down.”
“Great,” she softly replied.
Both then eased out of bed without disturbing Liam. When Susan finished letting her milk down, she dressed then went to the kitchen where she found both Cass and Liam sipping coffee. As she greeted them Cass handed her a cup of coffee. She said, “Thanks,” then took a sip.
Cass said, “Not to rush you but we probably should leave in a few minutes.”
“Wow that took me a little longer than I expected. Hopefully the new style breast pumps will arrive this week. I hope they are more efficient, otherwise I will need to get up a bit earlier.”
Even though they were a bit early entering the meeting hall, the group was about the same size as yesterday. After greeting the group Susan put the CD in the player then said, “It is a bit before our scheduled time to start, so in the meantime I can answer questions. First, today I plan to show you the forms like I did yesterday. When I do feel free to try them. After that we will go through them with the music. Now are there any questions?”
“I am Kaiden. What other exercises do you do?”
“Well I normally swim between 16 and 20 laps everyday when a pool is available. I also use a stepper or lift weights on alternate days. The purpose of lifting weights is to strengthen my shoulders, upper back, and chest muscles. Swimming is done for aerobic exercise as I don’t care for running. An alternative would be a stationary bike, but I am not sure about an appropriate length of time or the pace.”
“Thank you.”
“Conor. Several times yesterday I noticed a bit of soreness in some areas. Is that normal?”
“Likely. It should go away after a few sessions. For now, I can only lead three days a week. So for the other days, one of you could lead as the music plays. The forms don’t have to be exact but the closer they are to being correct the greater the benefit. Ah, it is time, so position yourself so you won’t interfere with another.” When she saw everyone was ready, she began showing them the forms. She held each one for several moments, before going on to the next.
When she finished, she said, “Very good. Now let’s do them in time with the music.”
When the music ended, she said, “Very well done. In thinking about Conor’s question, I suspect the soreness he noticed could be due to doing the forms twice. Some of the forms we use likely stretch muscles you use infrequently. See you all tomorrow.”
Rylee came over to Susan and said, “Today, I felt like I was in sync with you. I suspect this is because I’ve looked at videos of the exercises. In some cases those forms appear to be a bit different than what we’ve been doing and the sequence varied.”
“In due time, we will vary the sequence. Now the focus is learning the forms.”
“What kind of stepper do you use? And how do you lift weights to strengthen your shoulders, upper back, and chest muscles?”
“Can you visit me at Lone Pine? That way I can show you what I do and introduce you to our trainer.”
“I am not sure whether I can.”
Smiling Cass said, “I think arrangements can be made. If I may ask what is your goal?”
“Right now, to be a better wrangler. After high school, I would like to be more involved with operating the ranch. Actually, several of us would like to do that.”
“So noted. Several of our younger wranglers are working at Bar H with their wranglers. Let Cathal know that you are interested in doing that. You might suggest that to your friends.”
Rylee looked a bit apprehensive so Susan added, “Miria often fills the role of a wrangler there, so give it a whirl. One thing to remember, finesse often works as well as brute strength.”
Rylee inquired of Cass, “Could we visit Lone Pine later this week?”
“We should be able to do that. Check with me tomorrow or Tuesday.”
“I will. Thanks.”
Susan said, “Well I am ready for breakfast.”
“Me too,” added Liam.
