16th Tuesday – Lone Pine -
When Susan returned from letting her milk down, she poured a cup of coffee. As she sipped it she looked at the scenery. From her windows she couldn’t see the new stable but could see the temporary stable and a portion of the adjacent pasture. The foliage and ground this morning appeared to be quite wet. While it was overcast, the clouds were light coloured. As she finished her coffee, she could see the ground growing brighter as the sun rose above the horizon. She rinsed out her cup. She smiled as she enjoyed the wonderful view before heading to Tai Chi.
After Tai Chi Marcy approached Susan as she headed toward the swimming pool. Once they exchanged greetings Marcy inquired, “We are making a video this morning, and need a few more participants. Could you help out?”
“Well I could after I check on the horses. So I should be back around 9. What should I wear?”
“That would be fine. Actually what you wear when you are outside would be fine.”
“What is the role?”
“Basically the role is as a party attendee. So it will be you along with several others, observing the action.”
“I think I can manage that. How long do you think it will last?”
“For the scenes you would be in should be completed well before lunch.”
“Good, as I have a project that needs my attention this afternoon,” noted Susan as she prepared to swim.
On exiting the Hall F door after breakfast, Susan was pleased to see that the walls and trusses for the stable’s residence/office segment were in place. The residence/office segment was slightly narrower than the stable, but the roof trusses were the same length as those over the stable. The difference puzzled her for a moment, then she remembered that the overhang was to cover the porch around the residence suites. Walking toward the temporary stable, she stopped and looked back. It appeared that most of the side walls for the stable were in place along with the roof trusses. From this angle, she could see that the wall between the stable and residence/office area rose to just above the roof trusses. Susan felt a presence join her. When she looked over her shoulder, she saw Patricia. Turning to her she said, “Good morning.”
“That it is. We should have the roof on the stable before the forecasted rain arrives. Once it is enclosed there will be little visible change.”
“Well hopefully the rain will hold off till late Friday.” Seeing Patricia’s puzzled expression. She added, “Wednesday several of us are taking a two day horseback ride, with a return Friday morning. While I’ve ridden in the rain, it is not very enjoyable”
“I can see that, especially if you are wet. However, I am with you in hoping the rain doesn’t arrive until late Friday. As to the construction, once they start the interior work in the residents area, Lena and you ought to check it out every couple of days. By doing that, we will hopefully avoid making an error in building what you want.”
“I’ll mention that to Lena. Although I would be surprised, if any significant changes need to be made. I am looking forward to its completion.”
“I can imagine. Have a great day.”
“Same to you,” replied Susan. She then turned and continued toward the temporary stable.
On approaching the gate to the temporary pasture, Dante saw Susan approaching and started toward the gate. When she reached the gate, Dante was there to greet her. Most of the horses came over to the nearby stock tank. She smiled as she saw them looking around like they expected more people to be coming. After giving Dante and Dusty an apple, she checked the stable to see if it needed freshening up. She decided it was fine. When she passed Dante on the way to the gate, she said as she patted him, “Tomorrow, we are going for a ride.”
Susan had just sat down to eat lunch when Marcy, Caitlin, Lena, and Enola joined her. After exchanging greetings Marcy inquired, “What did you think of the plot for the video?”
“To be blunt, the storyline for that portion was too dark for my taste. Perhaps the storyline justified it, but that didn’t come across in the portion I was in.”
Marcy paused for a moment then said, “Ah ... I can see your point as I forgot you haven’t been involved in the other segments. That was the dark segment of the video. The story line begins with a woman sharing a fantasy with a friend of being in that situation. The friend sensing it was something the woman truly desired to experience, decides to set it up as you saw. The following segment explores the consequences of the friend’s decision and the woman’s reaction to experiencing her fantasy. We think it is a good story line. One that hopefully will make others think of potential consequences before acting.”
“I hope it achieves your goal. Imagine that, a sex video with a story line that raises a question for the viewer to consider.”
Laughing Marcy responded, “We’ve done that with some of our other videos. In each one, we’ve tried to raise the question of consequences without diminishing the pleasure of watching naked people enjoy passionate interaction.”
“Sounds like I need to watch one.”
“I’ll send you the IP address.”
Enola inquired, “Are we still on for tomorrow?”
“Yes,” responded Susan. “I still need to talk to AJ to see if there is a particular area he would like for us to check out. Also, we need to borrow a pack frame as we don’t have any.”
“Oops.”
After a moment Susan frowned then exclaimed, “Crap.”
“What?”
“Well it’s more than that. I just realized that we need a bit more than just a pack frame as I haven’t seen any camping gear.”
“Crap. Neither have I.”
“After lunch, I’ll call AJ, before I start working on my project.”
“I’ll do it, as I suspect you have other things that need your attention,” said Lena. “Perhaps Kathy or Terri can take me over to pick it up.”
Laughing Susan responded, “He’ll likely offer to bring it over so he can see how the stable is coming along.”
“Good point. You know if we find minor issues with the fencing during our ride, we can likely repair them.”
“While I’ve done a bit of that, it was ages ago.”
“Well I remember it all to well. So I will query AJ on that aspect. What about tents?”
“How about a ground cloth and a small tarp for each of us to sleep under as the dew has been pretty heavy.”
“That would work. I’ll put together a list of personal and community items we should take and send it to everyone.”
“Thanks.”
As Susan left the dining room, she saw Kim adding Isabel’s name to the board noting new births. According to the note she gave birth to twin girls earlier.
It was late in the afternoon when Lena called. After exchanging greetings, Lena said, “AJ and Wade will be here shortly with items for our ride tomorrow. I was going to store them in the tack area of the temporary stable.”
“Fine. Do you need my assistance?”
“Not really. Although, you might notice something I’ve overlooked. So, I’ll call you when they get here, which shouldn’t be too long.”
“That works, as I am almost at a stopping place.”
When Susan reached the temporary stable, the Bar-H truck was parked in front of the door to the tack area. Susan said, “Good afternoon, AJ, Wade.” She then gave each of them a hug.
With a smile Wade said, “We hear you are going on an adventure tomorrow.”
“I suspect it will be more of one than I expect as it has been a while.”
“Well after talking to Lena, we decided to loan you a few items. Some of the items, you will likely want to acquire. We also brought a few tools you can use to repair any simple fencing issues you come across. If it is serious, then note it, so we can deal with it after you get back.”
AJ said, “Both you and Lena have said that it has been a while since you did this. Well stuff has gotten better and changed a lot. So rather than bedrolls, we brought five sleeping bags with waterproof ground cloths and covers for each. There are stakes for the covers to keep them from blowing away. The covers are large enough to cover you and your saddle. We’ll show you how we use them in a moment. Now where do you want us to put the items.”
After everything was unloaded, Wade and AJ set up a ground cover, sleeping bag along with a saddle. They then placed the water proof cover over them and staked it down. Once it was set up they were shown how to enter and if needed close it to keep dry.
After it was set up,” AJ said, “While the sleeping bag claims to be waterproof, think of it as water resistant. Cause if you lay it in a puddle, it will soak through. Once wet, it takes a very long time to dry out. To me, once they get soaked, they are never as good.”
“So what is the difference between a bedroll and a sleeping bag?”
“What we call a bedroll is more water resistant than a typical sleeping bag. It is basically a canvas cloth that is folded in half with usually a blanket between the halves. There is no cushion or insulation. We don’t have any bed rolls and I am not sure were to buy one today.
“For what you will be using, if there is time and no dew, let it lay open in the morning during breakfast so it can air out. Otherwise do that in the evening when you setup camp.”
“Where did you get this stuff?” inquired Lena.
“Not sure, as either Sam or Donna bought these. I’ll check and let you know. You might ask your friends at AT ranch what they use.”
“I’ll ask the next time I see them,” responded Susan.
After putting away the gear, they had used for the demonstration, Lena said, “Shall we walk over and see how the stable is coming along?”
Smiling AJ replied, “I was hoping you would offer.”
They walked around the new stable but didn’t go inside. All the side walls were up with roof trusses in place. However looking through the doorways, they could see the interior work had not started. They could see several lifts inside at different locations. For the residential area, they could see that the floor for the second level was in place. The enclosure around the elevator and electrical service was still covered with the black tarp.
When they started walking back to the truck Wade said, “What was the black tarp for? It seemed kind of strange.”
“That is a carry over from the old barn,” replied Lena. “The tarp provides protection for the room while the stable is being built; The room provides access to electrical and water service which is in the basement.” Hearing her reply, AJ just smiled. When they reached the temporary stable, they thanked AJ and Wade for the equipment and gave them a hug before they left.
When Susan and Lena were approaching the dining room, they met Enola and Caitlin. Lena inquired, “Would you like to join us for dinner?”
“Sure,” they replied.
They were telling the server their selections when Jen joined them. After Jen noted her selections she said, “Are we all ready for tomorrow?”
“Probably,” responded Lena. “Earlier today, we realized that we hadn’t seen any camping equipment. So after confirming our suspicion, I contacted Bar-H to see if we could borrow a pack frame. When I did, I also asked where we could quickly find bedrolls, ground cloths, and waterproof tarps for five people. AJ told me that he wasn’t aware of any place you could purchase a bedroll today. He thought bedrolls were usually improvised. Today most use sleeping bags. AJ made several suggestions then offered to loan us what we needed. So after this trip, we need to decide what we need then find a source.”
With a puzzled expression Jen inquired, “What is a bedroll?”
Smiling Lena replied, “If memory serves me correctly, it was simply a piece of canvas about twice the size of a single bed. It was folded in half often with a blanket or two between the halves. Traveling it was rolled up and fastened to the back of the saddle.”
“Okay. A sleeping bag sounds a bit more comfortable.”
“What about food and breast pumps?” inquired Enola.
Caitlin replied, “Well this time for food, we are going to take some of the old emergency food stock the kitchen has. By doing this, the kitchen can replace what we use with newer stock. What we are taking is still good, it is just close to the expiration date.”
Lena added, “We’ll take four sets of the manual pumps along with two sets of the portable units. The cooler for the milk has a solar panel, so we should be able to use it to recharge the breast pumps. Marie and Rose weren’t sure that would work, which is another reason for four manual units.”
“Whatever happened to hopping on a horse and riding off into the sunset?” queried Susan with a smile. Her comment prompted them all to bust out laughing. They were loud enough to draw the attention of the others in the room.
When they settled down, Caitlin said, “Well, we are a little different.”
“In a way I see this excursion as a learning experience,” noted Susan. “Perhaps when we do this again, we should set it up so we actually cook over a fire.”
“That would be interesting,” responded Enola. “Although, if we do that, we should have a back up.”
“True. Lena, were there stoves in the stuff we were loaned?”
“Yes,” Lena replied, “and fuel. We will need to replace the fuel, and I presume we can get that in Sheridan. Beyond that we need to decide what camping items we need for a multi-day horseback ride then purchase them.”
Susan said, “I think we need to approach acquiring items carefully. To me there are two categories, personal and community. To me, the camp stove, fuel, pack frame, food, cooking gear, and perhaps shelter halves are community items. Personal items would be the sleeping bag, and duffle bag or backpack, ground cloth, and water proof cover. Personal items would go on the horse you are riding behind the saddle or perhaps on the pack horse. The community items would be carried by the pack horse.”
As they ate Susan had a thoughtful expression. When they were nearly done, Caitlin inquired, “Susan, you look like you were deep in thought?”
“Sort of. I revisited my off hand comment about riding into the sunset. In doing so, I realized that it could be done today. You can make a bedroll like those used in the past pretty easily. For food, you would hunt game or forage. To cook, you would roast what you catch attached to a sapling over a fire. With the knowledge we have, hunting wouldn’t be a problem. However, selecting edible vegetation could be. Cooking that way would be interesting and perhaps a challenge. So it could still be done, if necessary.”
The group nodded then Enola added, “Learning what edible vegetation is around here isn’t a bad idea.”
“Well I am looking forward to our outing,” noted Jen.
16th Wednesday – Lone Pine -
After Tai Chi, as Susan and Lena were walking to the pool, Susan inquired, “Do you have an extra CD with the music we use with Tai Chi?”
“I have several.”
“Could you loan one to me?”
“Sure. What is up?”
“Well I’ll make a copy and give you back your original. Monday morning I did my Tai Chi on Cass’s front porch. A couple of probably high school age children saw me and expressed an interest in knowing more. So I agreed to show them but noted that we needed a better location than Cass’s front porch. So I suspect when I am there this coming weekend, I will be leading a group.”
Smiling she responded, “I’ll put one in your mail box. You don’t need to make a copy as I have several.”
“Thanks.”
At breakfast, Susan and Lena smiled as they saw Enola, Caitlin, and Jen come in dressed to go riding. Once they selected their breakfast items, they joined them. After exchanging greetings Caitlin said, “Yesterday evening, I took the food over to the tack room. There are two breakfast and dinner meals for each of us that require heating. Lunch both days is dried fruit and granola bars. I didn’t get any water.”
“So did you get a variety of meals or all one kind?” inquired Jen.
“It is sort of a variety. The selections are similar to what I remember you all took on your hike. Actually, I took several extra over so some adjustments can be made. There wasn’t a wide variety of choices. I didn’t select any that I’ve heard stories about.”
“Like dried eggs,” responded Jen.
Wrinkling her nose, Caitlin quickly responded, “Breakfast selections are all cereal, dried fruit, and beef jerky.”
Later the only hiccup in getting ready was arranging the gear on the pack horse so it was stable and didn’t rattle. On leaving the temporary stable Susan led them northeast. Once out of the canyon, they headed sort of northwest. They rode without a lot of chatter. They often paused to look around or watch some game activity. It was a little after noon when they came to a windmill and a water tank with a nearby shady area. Enola said, “This looks like a nice place to pause for lunch.”
First they let the horses drink then led them over near the shady area so they could graze. Caitlin spread a ground cloth out for them to set on while eating lunch. As they ate, they chatted about the things they had seen. Some were surprised by what they had missed. After picking up their stuff and checking the horses, they were soon on their way.
It was late afternoon when a windmill came into view. As they got closer, they could see a small cabin near the windmill and a large stock tank at its base. Although it appeared that no one was around. When they were close, they paused and Susan called out. There was no response, they waited a few moments then rode up to the cabin. Lena and Jen dismounted and carefully approached the cabin. They went inside for a few minutes. When they came out Lena said, “Well it looks like we can sleep inside tonight.”
“Good,” responded several.
There was a small corral on the other side of the cabin. There was also a place, where they could place the saddles and gear so they would be out of the weather.
“This is a lot nicer than I expected,” commented Susan.
“Well I suspect the wranglers use this as a base when in this area,” responded Lena. “Based on how high the grass is in the corral, they haven’t been here recently.”
They chatted for a while after dinner and cleaned up but soon called it a day.
16th Thursday – Lone Pine -
When Susan woke, it took her a moment to realize where she was. After slipping out of her sleeping bag, she dressed then went outside for a bit. When she returned, she began using the manual breast pumps, as she found them fairly easy to use. She was about finished when the others began to stir.
Lena sat up and said, “Good morning.”
“Good morning. Sleep well.”
“Yes. Surprisingly so.”
While water was heating for breakfast, Susan and Lena led the group through their Tai Chi routine. By the time they finished the water was hot. First they made coffee, then reconstituted their breakfast. It wasn’t long before they were saddling their horses and placing the items on the pack horse. Before leaving Enola looked through the cabin to make sure they hadn’t left anything.
After mounting up they rode in a westerly direction. A couple of hours later they noticed a group of cows. Susan shifted their direction to pass the cattle on their left. It wasn’t long before they came to a fence line. Susan checked the map and decided that this fence just divided the pasture. The difficulty was that her map didn’t indicate where the gates were located. After discussing it, they decided to ride toward the boundary, hoping there would be a gate. They were in sight of the boundary fence when they found an improvised gate. After crossing into the other pasture, they paused to ensure that improvised gate was secure.
Around noon they found a shady area and stopped to have lunch. As they ate, Susan studied the map while the others chatted about what they had seen. After a bit Lena said, “Are you looking for something?”
“Sort of,” replied Susan. “If I am interrupting the map correctly, there should be a windmill and stock tank not to far ahead in the direction we want to go.”
“Okay. When we reach the next rise, I’ll take a look with my binoculars.”
Laughing Susan responded, “Dam good idea. Thanks.”
When they reach the windmill, they met two wranglers from the Bar-H. After introductions Clyde asked, “So how has your ride been?”
“Very nice,” responded several.
Sensing what he was asking, Susan then described the general path they had followed from Lone Pine. In doing so she noted the cabin where they had spent the night. She noted that it didn’t appear to have been used recently. The location of the herd they had come across earlier was noted.
“Thanks that helps,” responded Clyde.
Enola inquired, “What were you doing when we rode up?”
Moss said, “Lubricating it and checking to make sure it is working smoothly.”
