15th Tuesday -

It was a little after 5 when Susan woke up. After slipping out of bed, she reset the morning chime then went to let her milk down. When she returned, Tracey and Steve were both up. On seeing Susan, Tracey handed her a cup of coffee. She took a sip then went to check her appearance. On returning to the lounge, she finished her coffee then said, “Are you up for Tai Chi?”

“As ready as you are,” sleepily responded Steve.

“I hope, I didn’t disturb you when I got up.”

“Not me,” responded Tracey. “It took me several moments to respond when the chime came on. Thankfully, the coffee was ready.”

Just before Tracey opened the door to leave Steve said, “I received a text message. They arrived and there were no issues.”

After breakfast as Susan and Lena left the house via Hall F door, they saw Brian. He waved to them, as he started toward them. When he was close, he said, “I understand you have some items for Cass.”

It took Susan a moment to grasp the reference, then said, “Yes. When do you want me to bring them to you.”

“Well why not after you come back from caring for the horses. One of my group will be going back around then, so she can take them to her.”

“I gather you will be in the gym.”

“Most likely. At the moment, things seem to be going smoothly out here.”

Later when Susan entered the gym with the stuff for Miria, she saw Nituna with Brian. On reaching them she said, “Good morning. Nituna it is good to see you again.” After setting the bags down, she gave Nituna a hug. With a mischievous grin Brian said, “Don’t I get one.”

“Well, I can, as long as your spouse doesn’t object.”

Her response prompted both of them the chuckle, then Nituna offered, “I am sure she would not object if you did.”

With that Susan gave Brian a hug. She was surprised that he blushed slightly. Then gesturing toward the bag, “This is the stuff for Cass.”

“Great. I’ll be going back shortly.”

To Brian, Susan said, “It looks like you are making great progress.”

“Yes. So far the frames for those we’ve removed are in better shape than the initial ones.”

Susan said, “Nituna, thanks for taking the stuff to Cass. Both of you have a great day.”

When Susan returned to her suite Tracey said, “Lena called. Slim will arrive shortly and will meet you all at the temporary stable.”

“Great. I gather that is where she is.”

“I believe so. I’ve heard the name but who is Slim?”

“A saddle and tack maker. He is bringing new saddles for Dante and Cedar.”

“I knew you were looking for saddles, but why custom saddles?”

“While not absolutely necessary, using saddles that fit the horse has several benefits. If the saddle doesn’t fit the horse, its impact is similar to you wearing a pair of shoes that don’t fit. A saddle that fits the horse is comfortable for the rider and improves their communication with each other.”

“Okay. That makes sense.”

Just as Susan, Tracey, and Steve were entering the dining room for lunch, they met Jan coming out of the Security Center. After exchanging greetings, Jan inquired, “I presume we are still on for your meeting with Nicole after lunch.”

“Sure,” responded Susan. “I’ll need to retrieve my laptop before then.”

“Great. I’ve set it up for the A-B Conference room. Unless you need something special, you could use the computer in the room.”

“Thanks, for reminding me of the computer. Have you learnt any more of her background?”

“Well she has written several investigative type stories. I scanned a couple of them. Now in thinking about them, it seems like they took place over a short period of time.”

“Thanks.”

“Mind if I sit in.”

“Not at all. Actually that is a good idea.”

As they were eating lunch Tracey said softly, “So you are going to be a teacher?”

“More as a coach. I suspect, just sharing with her where I found the information we have, should give her a good start. Some of the locations I used, many wouldn’t consider. How you frame your query can inadvertently limit what you uncover.”

It was late afternoon when Tracey and Susan returned to her suite. Seeing them Steve said, “So how did it go?”

“Very well, I think,” responded Susan. “She was familiar with most of the resources I used but not all. I noted that how you phrase a query could cause her to miss important facts. I showed her some incidents that weren’t of interest to us, but she would likely find them useful. So all in all pretty good. I did agree to occasionally go over what she found and what I thought its implications were. How about you?”

“I spoke to Liam. He indicated that several of them were planning on assisting Miria in dealing with her sister’s ex. How hasn’t been decided. I again offered our assistance. He assured me that they would be contact us in the next day or two. Shifting topics, I did speak with our usual contacts. As a result, we may have a lead one or two on new data analysis projects.”

Tracey said, “Good. I need to check my messages and email. If I need to respond to any I should have time before dinner.”

After dinner Susan called Cass. When she answered Susan said, “Good evening.” After a pause she said, “Steve and Tracey are with me, can we use the speaker?” After a pause she pushed the button then said, “We are on speaker.”

“Good evening came a chorus of voices.”

Susan said, “How was your day?”

Ann and Carie took over and told of the various activities they had done with the other children. After it had went on for a few minutes Miria said, “Okay guys. You need to get cleaned up and ready for bed.”

After Ann and Carie moaned for a bit, they said goodbye to Susan, Tracey and Steve.

Laughing Susan said, “Well it sounds like, they like being there.”

“Oh, they do,” responded Miria. “There are quite a few children near their age, so they spent most of the day with them.”

“And a bit more relaxing for you,” suggested Susan.

Laughing Miria said, “As to monitoring them, yes. I’ve been assisting Cass and others and it has been enlightening. While many of the tasks we do are the same, the perspective on accomplishing them is surprisingly different. I’ve already learnt some things, due to the difference.”

Cass added, “And I’ve learnt from her. We’ve talked about this a bit, but as far as I am concerned, I am in no rush to see her and the children go back to the Bar H. I think Liam is enjoying their visit as well.”

“How are your parents doing?” inquired Susan.

“Pretty good, I think. We didn’t tell them where we were, mostly cause it didn’t come up. Dad did say that there had been more odd incidents. Such as gates open. Water tanks empty, some over flowing. Another section of fence was down. So the wranglers have been busy. Although he didn’t say so, I suspect the ex is behind the incidents. As it stands now the ex has told them that he will be there to pickup the children Friday afternoon. The ex told them that if the children aren’t there, they will regret it. Dad, spoke with the Sheriff about the issue. Unfortunately, he can’t do much until the ex does something illegal.”

“Sorry to hear that. Wish there was something, we could do to at least ease their worry.”

“I know and appreciate your concern.”

“Perhaps some of us can ride over tomorrow and assist where we can.”

“No don’t do that. I didn’t mention that the wranglers thought they had been shot at a couple of times.”

Frowning Steve said, “Well that raises the stakes.”

Susan then inquired, “I haven’t heard any comments recently, so are the drones living up to your expectations.”

“In more ways than you may imagine,” responded Liam. “On a more positive note, the Chiefs are considering holding a pow wow in the near future. The barbecue at the Bar H has given us some ideas on things to include.”

“Great. We will look forward to it.”

They chatted for a bit longer then Ann and Carie interrupted with, “Miria told us it was time for bed. So good night.”

“Good night, Ann and Carie,” said all the adults.

A little later Susan said, “I think we’ve covered everything, we had in mind when I called.”

Cass responded, “Well we are glad you called. Until next time, take care.”

15th Wednesday – Lone Pine -

When Susan returned to the suite after caring for the horses, she found Steve and Tracey busy. She checked her mail, then the various news sites for Sheridan and surrounding area. When she finished, she saw that they were still focused on some tasks, so she opened a project that she had started. After reviewing where she was, she made some adjustments to the analysis parameters then initiated the program. When she looked up, it appeared they had paused. Taking the opportunity she said, “When it is convenient, I would like for us to discuss what we see as our path into the future.”

“Well we’ve tried that several times,” responded Steve with a smile and Tracey nodding. “However, unanticipated events occurred that alter them, sometimes significantly. Rescuing you could be considered to be one. I am certain that it was the correct thing to do and doing so has had a positive impact.”

“I agree,” added Tracey.

Susan responded, “Ah ... I’ve always thought of it as choosing a path while realizing that events or destiny would alter what happens. To me the challenge is to wisely choose the new, shall we say, opportunities when destiny reveals them. Probably not well said.”

“You have an interesting way of looking at it,” said Tracey. “So how do you see yours?”

“Well it’s obvious that the event some four months ago has placed me on a different path. For one, it seems to me that my current path now includes raising horses and training them as well as what I’ve been doing. Interacting with horses is something that I hadn’t considered since high school. Well more correctly hadn’t even thought about. At the same time, I can continue the work I’ve been doing since college, in part due to our relationship. So if I continue as I have for the last dozen or so weeks, I see some issues that perhaps I need to consider.

“So, for one, due to me living here should I provide babies for adoption? To me, doing so is giving someone an amazing gift, but there are risks. It is also a common attitude of the residents.

“What of a life partner? Am I destined to have one. That is something I never actively thought about as I just expected it would happen. Currently Liam is an attractive partner. I believe or sense there is an interest. I am sure Cass, would like the three of us to have a closer relationship. I do sense that my relationship with them will continue to grow.

“At the same time, Lena definitely has a role in my future, definitely with respect to the stable endeavor. I do enjoy her company and we have had some good times together.

“We’ve touched on the idea of me providing you with children.

“So that is the personal stuff. On the financial side I wonder if I should shift some of my investments to supporting businesses in this area. For example, Abernathy Equipment. They provide friendly service and will suggest alternative equipment if that seems to be a better fit for a customers needs. Based on what I’ve heard, their pricing is reasonable. To me they appear to be a bit thin on equipment and perhaps capital. Another possibility, would be a dinner theatre, which I think would be a new business. Beyond that I don’t know.”

Steve said, “By investing in local business, you are referring to providing funding.”

“Essentially. My issue is that I am not sure how to go about it.”

“Well providing private funding to a business is not something with which we have any experience. We do know some people who could provide advice on how to proceed. As to the other, I am not sure how to respond.”

Tracey said, “We can and will listen which is what I think you are seeking. I suggest we table this until after lunch as it will soon be that time. Doing so will let me finish a couple of items before lunch, then I am open.”

“After lunch or even tomorrow is fine. None of my dithering is urgent, so if events intercede then we can revisit this the next time we are together.”

“Well we certainly have been drawn into several unanticipated events this time,” noted Steve. “There is no reason, we can’t start the discussion this afternoon.” He wiggled his eyebrows and added, “Or just spend time very close to each other.”

“I would like that. Now, since you all have some tasks to complete, I think I will begin reading one of the library books.”

When they returned from lunch Tracey with a smile says, “Why don’t we get comfortable on the bed, while we chat?”

Laughing Susan responds, “That is an excellent suggestion.”

In the bedroom, they quickly slipped out of their clothes. They embraced each other and exchanged kisses as they caressed each other. It wasn’t long before they moved to the bed. During this time very few words were heard.

15th Thursday – Lone Pine -

On entering the gym, Susan, Tracey, and Steve, paused and looked around. They were amazed by how much removing the window covers had changed the gym’s ambiance. After a few moments, they walked over to those there for Tai Chi. Lena said, “Isn’t the change amazing?”

Tracey nodded, “It is.”

Jackie stepped up to Susan and gave her a hug then a kiss. “Thank you.”

A flustered Susan responded, “Your welcome, but I am not sure what I did.”

“The other day when we were talking about the exercise equipment in front of the windows, you made a comment about the lack of windows. It prompted a train of thought that led me to remembering the view of the gym from outside. That told me that there were windows, so...”

“Well now the gym certainly has a different atmosphere.”

“That it does,” said several.

Janet sounded the chime, signaling the group that it was time for Tai Chi class to begin.

At breakfast Lena said, “Have you spoken to Miria?”

“Yes,” responded Susan. “Briefly, Tuesday evening. They were doing fine. The children were enjoying having others their age to play with. She advised us that there had been several more unexplainable incidents at the Bar H. Her Dad thought, Emmy’s ex was behind them.”

Kathy added, “There were a few serious ones yesterday. Fortunately no one was hurt.”

“I presume the Sheriff is aware of the problem.”

“He is, but needs an incident to act.”

After a moment Crystal said, “It looks like a nice day for a horseback ride, but unfortunately I have other things to do with a higher priority. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t assist in caring for them after we finish here.”

Tracey said, “Well, I have some calls to make, so I will have to skip it. I think Steve is in the same boat.”

Kathy noted, “Well I don’t have much experience with horses, but have some time this morning.”

Lena and Susan smiled, then Lena said, “Well you are welcome to join us any time. Many hands shorten the time, or something like that.”

“Okay. I’ll go change.”

As the group left the building Patricia waved, prompting Susan and Lena to join her. She said, “As you can probably tell, we are ready to begin putting up the wall panels for the stable and arena. It will begin either this afternoon but definitely tomorrow morning. We’ve been using the path you used before that goes around the northeast side of the buildings. While we can continue to do that, handling the panels would be easier if we could bring them in on the west side. Note that a load of panels is quite a bit heavier than the previous deliveries. Can you designate a path for us to use on the west side before they begin arriving?”

Susan took a deep breath then responded, “When do you expect them to arrive?”

“We expect the first load shortly after lunch?”

“Well, I am fairly certain that we can outline a path before lunch. However, we may need to move some cattle before it can be used. Lena, why don’t you saddle Cedar and Dante, while I call Sam about potentially needing to move his cattle.”

“That will work,” responded Lena, then with a smile added, “Our assistants this morning will likely want to assist with this as well.” Then with a smile added, “It’s not quite what Crystal wanted to do, but close.”

Patricia said, “My apologies for not suggesting this before now.”

Susan responded with a smile, “It shouldn’t take us long to sort this out. Besides, when we started this I thought there would be more things that we had overlooked.”

“There have been a few, but overall the job is proceeding very well.”

When Susan reached the Bar H, it was answered with “Good morning.”

She responded, “Good morning. This is Susan Wyland. Is Sam available?”

“Susan, this is AJ. Sam’s not close by at the moment. Can I help you?”

“Perhaps. We just learnt that a series of semis will be arriving over the next several days with the wall panels for the stable. To simplify their route to the stable, we need to mark a path across the field on the westerly side of the house and construction area. To do that, we may need to move the cattle, perhaps further to the west or northwest.”

“That should be fine. For how long?”

“Not sure, but I would be surprised if it was more than a week.”

“Moving them in that direction should be fine. Where were you going to route the trucks?”

“Some what along the lane, and in a way that takes advantage of the gates and avoids the cattle guards.”
