15th Sunday – Lone Pine -
Those going on the horseback ride were saddling their horses, when the phone in the stable rang. Lena answered it and heard Beth say, “Miria just turned on to our lane. It looks like Liam and Cass are not very far from you.”
“Yea, we can see Liam and Cass.”
“I’ll have someone meet Miria and direct her to you.”
“No. Have her wait for us there and we will ride over. We’ll head that way as soon as Liam and Cass reach us.”
“Fine.”
After hanging up Lena said, “Miria just turned on to our lane. So let’s saddle a horse for her and meet her in front of the house.”
By the time the horse was saddled, Liam and Cass were quite close. The group led their horses out of the temporary pasture then mounted up. Susan waved to them indicating the direction they were taking.
Lena said softly, “We seem to be all in atwitter this morning.”
“Well we weren’t very precise in setting a departure time,” replied Susan. “We are bringing three groups together. So is this an indication that we will have an exceptionally interesting day?”
Laughing Steve said, “Many times being with you has been very interesting.”
Susan stuck her tongue out at Steve. Her response prompted the others to laugh.
When Cass and Liam joined them, Cass said, “Sorry for being a bit slow in getting here.”
“Not a problem,” responded Susan. “Miria, arrived a few minutes ago and is meeting us in front of the house.”
When they reached the house, Miria was standing beside her truck looking a bit frustrated. Susan dismounted then greeted Miria with a hug. As she was greeting Miria, the others dismounted. As she did she softly said, “Is everything okay? Is there something we can do?”
“Later,” responded Miria softly with a smile. “You promised an adventure, so...”
“Your horse is Misty,” said Lena as she handed Miria the reins.
With that they mounted up and headed west toward the ridge. Their path across the pasture wandered, but on reaching the tree line they started up the trail. When they were just below the crest Susan brought them to a stop. Everyone looked around. A few wondered why she had stopped. After a few moments, Cass and Liam smiled as they realized that just Susan and them were aware of the very faint trail following the ridge line.
Liam said, “Susan, you have very good eyes. I know of very few who would have noticed it.”
With that Susan led the group down the path, she said, “We followed this path several weeks ago, so I am a bit surprised that it isn’t more noticeable.”
“Considering the surroundings, it may take a lot of traffic to make it more noticeable for any length of time,” suggested Cass. She thought, “Or the spirits only want certain people to find it.” When she glanced over to Liam, he just nodded.
On reaching the site, Susan dismounted then slowly led Dante into the site. Those with her followed her example. They slowly looked around the site as they entered it. In doing so they would focus on examining an aspect before moving on. Somewhat in the center was what appeared to be a low table. Around it was what appeared to be places for people to sit. The height of the seats in relation to the table, indicated that the seats were for tall individuals. After a bit, Cass and Liam sat down on seats near the table. Seeing their action, Miria, Lena, Tracey and Steve moved to sit near them. Susan smiled as she slowly looked around the site. The horses were standing quietly near the entrance. Her friends were quietly sitting apparently enjoying the surroundings.
Again, she slowly turned to examine their surroundings. When she did she noticed a narrow gap in the rock wall near her and what appeared to be a path. As she stepped toward it, she wondered why she hadn’t noticed it until now. Then she dismissed the thought as she remembered her position had changed since her initial survey. On entering the gap, the area before her seemed to brighten. After taking a few more steps, she felt an unusual sensation, one of warmth and welcoming. After several more steps, a room opened before her. She gasped. Standing before her was a lovely woman on the far side of the room. The woman was wearing what appeared to be a robe. She was about her height and build, but perhaps a few years older.
As she started to speak, Susan noted that the woman’s eyes looked different. “My apologies, I didn’t realize someone lived here.” The woman smiled as she spoke. After a moment she added, “You look like someone I know, but I can’t recall a name.”
“Welcome. I was hoping you would return so we could meet.” When the woman spoke, Susan was shocked as it was the same voice that had intruded on her thoughts at times in the past. “Come sit with me for a while. Your friends will be fine.”
“You are...”
“Yes. Most of the times when you’ve heard a voice it has been me. Occasionally, it was one of my daughters. I’ve been told that my daughter’s voice sounds very much like mine to your people.” As she was speaking, she beaconed Susan to join her on the nearby bench. Once they were sitting down, she offered her hand to Susan. When their hands touched Susan had a sensation of warmth envelope her.
Susan said softly, “Based on what I’ve read, I have many questions. First I am not complaining, but I thought we had to reach out to you in a special place in order to meet with you.”
“If you are seeking our advice, that is true. However, many find it difficult to do that now because that knowledge was destroyed by those who wanted to restrict who approached us. By coming to a place like this, you can reach out to us for a meeting. However, it needs to be for a serious issue. When you do we may not be available, but your attempt will be noted. If you have a request, it will be noted, and addressed if appropriate. As noted in some writings, bringing a bit of food and wine, is a nice gesture. Some find that just coming here and considering the issues they are facing, enables them to figure out a potential solution to try.”
“How should I address you?”
“Branwen, would be fine.”
“Goddess Branwen,” softly responded Susan, “is there something I can do for you?”
Smiling the Goddess responded, “Not at this time, but perhaps in the future. Your visit to this site provided me with the opportunity to assure you that your friends are with us. They hope you again find the happiness that you had with them.”
Susan sighed and felt a weight she didn’t know she was carrying disappear. “Thank you for sharing that. Recently I’ve found myself attracted to Cass and Liam. They are the first since my friends disappeared.”
“I’ve noticed. Are you comfortable with your situation?”
“Oh, yes. Thank you for the encouragement you’ve given me.”
Smiling She replied, “The choices are always yours to make. When We have the chance, We try to help you see the consequences resulting from the choice you make.”
They sat quietly holding hands. After an indeterminate time, Susan’s awareness returned. When it did, she found herself standing near a rock wall very relaxed. When she looked toward her friends, they stood and looked around. On seeing Susan they headed toward her.
When they reached Susan, she said, “So what do you think?”
After a moment Steve responded, “I find this a very peaceful location. A place where I believe I could share my concerns with my Deity.”
“Well said,” noted Liam. “I sense this site is very old and has not been visited in a very very long time. I am not sure it would be a wise idea to tell others of this place. To me this a place you need to be guided too.”
Cass responded, “I agree. Even sharing the knowledge of this place, those represented by this site will determine who finds it. To me we found it, due to Susan. Now, having been given entry, I suspect we can return. To me it is a good place to come to if you are haunted by an issue and need a quiet place to contemplate a solution.”
“I agree,” said Susan. “When we do, we should bring a bit of nourishment and refreshments for our apparent host.”
“So some bread, cheese, along with wine and glasses,” speculated Tracey.
Cass and Liam gave Tracey a funny look.
“Those are the elements of the offerings mentioned in some stories that describe humans meeting a deity in other regions. I would presume the elements would be cultural dependent as the setting of those stories was a long way from here.”
“Okay, that makes sense,” responded Liam with the others nodding.
“Is everyone ready to continue our ride?” inquired Lena.
As the group began to exit the site Susan looked back toward the gap she had entered and thought, “Thank You for the opportunity to meet You and share some time with You. I will likely seek Your consul in the future, but I will endeavor to not jiggle Your elbow very often.” Susan felt a warm feeling slide over her when she completed her thought. When she turned Dante to follow the group, she wondered how long she had tarried as they were out of sight. She didn’t wonder long as she had only gone a short distance before she saw her friends.
On reaching the trail that ran over the ridge, they turned right and soon crested the top. They paused to enjoy the view. After a few moments Lena said, “There is a nice spot to stop for lunch a short distance ahead.”
As they ate lunch, they discussed various activities occurring at Lone Pine and AT ranches. While Miria participated she seemed to be distracted. When the conversation lapsed for a bit, Susan said, “Miria, you seem to be distracted. Is there something we can help you deal with?”
It was several moments before Miria took a deep breath then responded, “Could Ann, Carie, and I live at Lone Pine for a while?”
With a puzzled expression Susan replied, “That is a possibility, but we would need to ask Madeline. While I think they’ve enjoyed their visits, living there might be a different story. Why the interest?”
Miria sighed then responded, “Well, Emmy’s ex is trying to gain custody of Carie and Ann. While I don’t know all the details, I know from what Emmy told me, I won’t let this happen. Based on what I’ve over heard, he has been demanding that Mom and Dad relinquish their custody to him or there will be grave consequences. Him having custody of Ann and Carie, is not something Emmy would have wanted. Based on what she told me and I’ve seen he is a domineering, abusive...”
“Grave consequences?” responded Liam with a puzzled expression.
“Incidents that appear to be accidents. I don’t know of any specific ones. Well one of our wrangler cabins over near you burnt down recently. It hadn’t been used in a while, so the incident is puzzling. Fortunately, it didn’t trigger a grass fire. About then a part of the herd for some unknown reason moved further away. Wade suspects one of the wranglers is feeding him information on our activities. This is based on the nature of his threats and the occurrence of minor incidents that otherwise would seem normal.”
“Well if I remember correctly, I think we noticed a range cabin fire some distance from us. Since we didn’t react, I suspect wranglers were seen nearby. When we get back, I’ll see if we have any images of that area around the time of the event.”
“Thank you. The other has been gates left open. Stock tanks empty or overflowing. A section of fence obviously pulled down.”
Steve, Tracey, and Susan frowned hearing Miria’s concerns.
Liam inquired, “Did he directly threaten your parents?”
Miria took a deep breathe replied, “To me, him saying ‘grave consequences’ was a direct threat.”
“So we need to take these kind of incidents as a threat to all of us, since we interact.”
Cass said, “Sensing Susan’s concerns with an extended visit, which I think you were alluding to. Why don’t you come stay with us? While we don’t have a pool, there are children their age with whom they can play.”
“So let’s blend the two offers together,” suggested Susan. “Miria, Ann, and Carie will come visit us. Then perhaps late in the evening, we could all ride horses over to Liam’s. I believe there are several ways we can go and not be noticed. Then I can bring our horses back.”
Steve said, “What do you know about him?”
“He goes by Bear. Off hand I don’t remember his formal name. Oh, I suspect it is in the papers Emmy gave me to keep for her. I haven’t thought of them for some time. From what Emmy told me, he wanted to move to a rural area in Montana. I believe she went there a couple of times. She didn’t like the location or the others who were always around. She only said that it gave her bad vibes and some of the residents were just creepy.”
Lena said, “What were you going to tell Donna and Sam?”
“I really hadn’t gotten that far in my thinking. Until we started talking, I was still trying to decide where to go and how to do it without leaving a trail. Considering our relationship, I decided that I needed to be up front with you about my concerns. I have also be considering that it would be best for us to essentially disappear for a while.”
Steve shook his head then said, “It is easy to talk about disappearing, but difficult to do successfully on your own without a lot of preparation. More difficult when it is a group that includes small children.”
With tears in her eyes Miria said, “I promised Emmy to keep them safe and out of his clutches. My biggest fear is that he will kidnap them, then destroy the ranch including those living there.”
Tracey said, “I have a suggestion that shouldn’t draw attention. When Miria gets home she quietly informs her parents that due to the ex’s threats, she is taking the children to stay with Susan for a while. Nothing is said about shifting to Liam’s. This evening Kathy, Susan, Steve, and I were planning on going to town for dinner and perhaps a little dancing. So on our way, we will drop by your place to pickup the information you offered. While there we will indicate that we are looking forward to you and the children visiting us tomorrow. Some time after you all are at Lone Pine, you can join Liam at the AT Ranch.”
“Well ... we can do that,” responded Miria with a concerned expression. “I have concerns on how he will react if he shows up to claim the children and they are not there. Based on what Emmy had told me, he will likely go into a rage. If that happens, I fear for everyone there. I am not sure my parents realize how dangerous he is.”
Steve looked at Liam then said, “Do you know when he intends to come for them?”
“Friday, I believe.”
“Good, we have some time.”
“Thank you. Your support means more than I know how to express.”
“You need to be careful that you don’t tip your hand to those at your ranch,” noted Tracey.
With that they gathered up their trash, then mounted their horses. When Susan saw that everyone was mounted, she turned Dante in a northwesterly direction. Taking her cue, he began moving. With out a word the group followed them. As they rode along they chatted and pointed out different places in the distance.
A short distance down the trail, Liam eased up next to Steve and softly said, “If you need resources to actively deal with a situation, don’t hesitate to call me regardless of the time.”
Steve softly replied, “Thank you. I will. By the same token, let us know if you need assistance. I’ll make sure you have our contact information.”
When they reached a spot that Susan thought was north of home, she turned toward the ridge. On reaching the tree line, she found a trail that would take them over the ridge. When they exited the tree line in the canyon, they were northwest of their house near the creek.
Their approach took them past where the new stable was being built. As they rode around it, Liam said, “It looks like they are making good progress.”
“Yes,” responded Lena. “We are anxious for it to be completed.”
On reaching the temporary stable Liam said, “We will be on our way. We enjoyed your company and thanks for including us in the visit to the site.”
“Well now that you know of it, if you sense a need, feel free to visit it.”
Both Cass and Liam nodded, then Liam added, “Enjoy your evening in town. We will be looking forward to having some guests tomorrow.”
Miria looked at Susan then said, “Very likely. We’ll let you know if things change.”
“That won’t be necessary. Just do what needs to be done.”
Miria was puzzled by the response then saw Susan nodding with a half smile.
After watching Cass and Liam ride off, the group began taking care of their horses. When they finished, they walked Miria over to her truck. After exchanging hugs, they watched as she drove down the lane.
While Susan, Tracey, and Steve were dressing for the evening, Steve said, “Would it cause any problems if we delayed our return till Sunday?”
“Not from my perspective,” responded Susan with a smile.
“I believe I can do all my tasks from here,” responded Tracey. “We do need to be back Monday. Why?”
“My inclination is that I would like to be around if the ex shows up to cause problems. I am curious about what is in the documents Emmy left with her.”
That evening at the Bar H as they exchanged greetings Susan and Tracey noticed that Sam and Donna seemed a bit distracted. Susan said, “We really enjoyed your get together yesterday. Events like that are a nice way to become more familiar with your neighbors.”
“Oh, we enjoyed having everyone here,” responded Donna with a smile. “Unfortunately afterward, we received some disturbing information and haven’t sorted out how to respond.”
As Miria came back into the room she said, “Susan, this is the information I promised you.” With that she handed a package to Susan.
Nodding to Miria, Susan replied to Donna, “Well if there is anything, we can assist you with don’t hesitate to let us know.”
“Thank you,” responded Donna as Sam nodded.
Tracey said, “We’re looking forward to seeing you and the children tomorrow.”
Miria glanced at her parents, then said, “We need to stop by the library before coming over. So it would be mid morning or so.”
Susan said, “Can we go with you? I haven’t been to the one here yet.”
“Sure. How about I pick you up around 9. That way we will arrive at the library about the time it opens.”
“Deal.”
Kathy said, “I hate to rush us, but we need to be going in order to make our dinner reservation.”
Donna inquired, “Where are you going?”
“Sally’s Steakhouse. Afterward, we may stop by Crystals for a bit.”
“Sally’s is very nice. I heard Crystals has a good group playing this weekend.”
“Which is why we will likely stop by.”
As they were sipping their coffee after dinner, Tracey said, “This was an excellent choice.”
Susan noted, “Well we can thank Kathy for choosing it. Are we ready to see what Crystals is like?”
Smiling Kathy responded, “I think you all will like it as well.”
At Crystals they were surprised when the hostess greeted Kathy then waived them through. Kathy noted her companions surprise. Once they had sat down and ordered drinks, Kathy said, “I was surprised to be waived through. This is where Jan, Jen and I met the guys from Abernathy’s. Since then we’ve also been to the Palace with the guys. I think this place has a nicer atmosphere.”
“Oh, I remember now,” responded Susan.
