15th Friday Afternoon – Lone Pine -
While Susan had been analyzing data, Brian provided Jackie with a quote for removing all of the window covers then moving them to the basement. After reviewing the quote, she took it to Madeline for approval.
Madeline looked over the quote, then said, “This looks very reasonable. I am tempted to approve it now, but considering that this could have major implications I need to check with the Trust. Can you stay while I make the call?”
“Sure,” responded Jackie with a surprised expression.
A few moments later Madeline said, “Good Afternoon, Tony. I am calling about the window covers on the outside walls of the gym. I’ve received a quote for removing them and it seems quite reasonable.” She paused for a moment then said, “Really. Can I put you on speaker phone, as I have our fitness instructor, Jackie, with me?” After a moment Madeline pressed a button on the phone then said, “Tony, we are now on speaker.”
“Good afternoon, Jackie.”
“Good afternoon,” responded Jackie.
“Jackie, you are welcome to call me Tony. As I started to tell Madeline, we located the information on the purpose of the covers. It was done to reduce heat loss in the winter. When it was done, it was with the idea that they would only be up during the winter. After they were installed, the window covers were never mentioned again in either accounting or site activity records. The records do show that they were effective as the utility costs did go down after they were installed.
“Since Madeline first advised us of the issue and seeing the background information on the covers, we’ve discussed the issue. In doing so it was noted that the thermal efficiency of window glass has significantly improved since the building was remodeled. In light of this, we think all the windows should be replaced with thermally efficient ones. In order to assess the benefit, we would like to initially focus on replacing just the gym’s windows. As this is a recent decision, we haven’t begun looking for a contractor yet. It is on the list to do. Another upgrade we are considering is replacing the lights with LEDs.”
Jackie looked at Madeline with a raised eyebrow. Smiling Madeline nodded. Jackie said, “Well the contractor who removed the window covers offered to look for suitable replacement windows with high thermal efficiency. If found, they would make a proposal.”
“Who is the contractor?”
“As to the name of the company, I don’t know. The person I spoke to is Brian. He oversees the organizations work crews. I think most of whom reside on the ranch north of us. Best Built Custom Stables hired them to do the necessary grading and foundation work for the new stable and arena. Also, it was his crew that took down the old barn. They also did the concrete floor for the steel building.”
“Okay. I don’t think I saw the contract for removal of the old stable.”
Smiling Madeline said, “You won’t as there wasn’t one. Lena and Susan worked a deal with Brian. All we paid for was the rental equipment they needed for the job. They disassembled the barn so they could put it up on the AT Ranch north of us. As to the floor of the new building, the only expense was the concrete, again thanks to Lena and Susan. To achieve that they waived stud fees twice for two AT Ranch mares.” By the time Madeline finished, Tony was clearly laughing and both Jackie and Madeline were smiling.
When he settled down, he said, “The low cost of putting up the steel building and negligible cost for barn removal has puzzled the accounting department.”
“I know,” responded Madeline. “They’ve queried Kim several times. I don’t think there will be any barter arrangements for either the new stable or replacing the windows.”
“Earlier you mentioned AT Ranch, if I remember that they are sort of north to northwest of you.”
“Yes. I understand that Brian lives on the ranch as does many of his crews. I believe he is also one of the Tribe’s Chiefs.”
“You are correct. I’ve found a listing for a company known as ‘AT Constructors,’ with a Mr. Brian Quinn listed as the contact person. It has nearly the same address as the AT Ranch. Considering that the stable builders hired them, why don’t we hold off on looking for another contractor until we see their proposal for the window replacement. If their quote is reasonable for a product with the needed performance, we may not need to look further.”
“Fine,” responded Madeline. “I hope it works out as our residents seem to be quite comfortable with their presence. As far as I know, all of the interactions with our neighbors have been warm and friendly.”
“Good. You might want to hold off on telling him that we intend to replace all the window. While our energy costs there are reasonable, this change would lower them, perhaps significantly. Depending on how effective this is, we may do something similar at our other locations. So thank you for raising this issue. Anything else?”
“To summarize, we are to go forward with removing the gym’s window covers. We are to request a quote for replacing all the gym windows with those having high thermal efficiency.”
“Yes. Between us the window project may grow in size.”
“Great.”
“Anything else?”
“Not at this time.”
“Jackie, it was good to chat with you. Until next time, bye.”
After Madeline and Jackie responded, they heard the phone disconnect.
Jackie said, “Thanks for including me. Is he always so easy to interact with?”
“Pretty much. I sought to include you cause the explanations you provided would be first hand and you were here. So how are things in the gym and getting residents to exercise?”
“Well pretty good. Replacing the barn with a stable has had an interesting impact. When work started out there, several steppers were moved in front of the windows facing that area. They got a lot more use than the others, even when there was no outside activity. At some point, Susan made an off hand comment about it being to bad their weren’t more windows. After thinking about it for a bit, I remembered how the outside of the gym looked. It has windows just like the rest of the building. So a little investigating has led us to where we are today.”
Smiling Madeline said, “I think, we were blessed by her coming here.”
“I agree. I really enjoy interacting with her and the assistance she has given me.”
“Assistance?” enquired Madeline with a puzzled expression.
“Yes. Several times I’ve heard her chatting with a resident. The topic was similar to one I recently had with the resident. This usually occurred not long after I had spoken to the resident suggesting several exercises. At first I was a bit miffed, but then I realized that residents see me as the instructor while Susan is a peer. So essentially the same message arrives from two different perspectives. So now I just smile, as I know the resident will likely do some if not all the suggested exercises.
“Since we are discussing the gym, I would like to designate a couple of residents as assistants. While I don’t think they would ask, can we offer them some renumeration for filling that role.”
“What do you see as the assistant’s role?”
“Basically overseeing activities when I am absent and giving personal assistance.”
“How do you handle that now?”
“There are several who monitor the area when I am eating or out of the room for some reason. The pool is off limits unless there are at least three in the area. The same is true for the exercise area and weight lifting.”
Madeline was shocked on hearing Jackie’s comments implying she was actively working in the gym seven days a week. She wondered how she had overlooked that situation and were their others. “So the gym is essentially open 24 hours a day. Do we need someone overseeing it around the clock?”
“Not really. We have guidelines for use in off hours. The residents need to be responsible for their activities. Like the play room, to use the area, there must be at least two people present. Currently I am there from around 5 AM till 8 PM or so, except for meals. That is because I like the environment. Always have. I have a Physical Education degree. I taught for a couple of years, then heard about this job and applied. So I’ve been here a few years longer than you have.”
“Have you taken any vacation?”
“Just a few of our excursions. When I did that, I posted a notice and asked a few who are frequently in the gym to keep an eye on things. I have to admit that I worried about the place while I was gone.”
“Well you should recruit a couple of residents to formally take the role as your assistants. As to renumeration, I will contact the Trust office. When you enlist assistants, be sure to tell them that they will have a larger role when you go on an excursion.”
“Thank you. Now I will see if I can find Brian and advise him that the proposal for removing the window covers is approved. I will also ask for a quote to replace the gym’s windows with thermally efficient ones.”
“Fine.”
Lena and Susan had just sat down to dinner, when Jan, Jen and Jo joined them. After exchanging greetings, Lena said, “What’s new?”
Susan responded, “Well, I’ve managed to complete the reports on two analysis. After dinner Alison is going to trim my hair.”
“I didn’t realize she trimmed hair,” responded Jen. “I need mine trimmed.”
“Well don’t forget, we are invited to the Bar H tomorrow for barbecue,” noted Lena.
“Do you think everyone wants to go?” enquired Jan.
“Probably not. Now that you’ve said that, perhaps we should have a sign up list so the kitchen knows how to adjust meal preparation. Also, while some of us may ride horses over there, we don’t have enough for everyone.”
Lena responded, “Okay. I’ll check with Madeline and Kim before I take point and set something in motion.”
Susan said, “I am sure Kathy and Terri would like to go. By the way, Tracey and Steve will arrive tomorrow and are scheduled to depart from Casper on Wednesday. So some of us will go to Casper on Wednesday and return Thursday or Friday. As to activities, we will likely go into Sheridan Sunday evening for dinner and probably visit Crystals.”
“Anyone going with you?” asked Jan.
“I’ve asked Kathy to drive since she is familiar with Sheridan. If some of you all want to come along that is fine. Let me know in the morning so I can adjust the restaurant reservation.”
Jen said, “We heard today that Ernie has been hired by the SK ranch. Ernie’s prediction that Wilson would fire him was correct. Fortunately, Ernie took our advice and looked for work on the way back to town. He stopped at the SK ranch and was hired. They wanted him to start immediately, so he let Jim know that SK had hired him and needed a ride. Jim showed up at Wilson Livestock Auction as Ernie was entering the office. Seeing Ernie enter the office, Jim decided to walk over to it. He heard Wilson refusing to give Ernie the pay he was due and interceded. So Ernie got paid, then Jim took him over to SK ranch. Jim indicated that they were now looking into how Wilson Livestock Auction operates. While he didn’t say anything, I suspect he has some suspicions.”
“If Wilson treated everyone that worked for him like he did Ernie, the Sheriff may have an easy time determining what is going on,” added Jo.
It was a little before 7:30 when Susan approached room G204. Moments after she pressed the button, Alison opened the door, and said, “Good evening.”
“Yes it is,” responded Susan. On entering they exchanged hugs then Susan greeted Betsy.
Alison said, “While it is a little cosy, I’ve been doing some hair styling in our bathroom.”
With that Susan followed Alison to the bathroom. She sat down in the chair facing a mirror. Alison covered her with a cape. As Alison combed Susan’s hair, she said, “Now in seeing it up close, I think all that is needed is a bit of trimming. Your hair lays very nicely which could be due to you wearing it long.”
“That will be fine as you can see it much better than I can.”
With that Alison dampened Susan’s hair, then began trimming it. As she did that, they talked about various aspects of life at Lone Pine.
During this Susan advised her, “At dinner, I noted that you were going to trim my hair. When I did, Jen indicated she would be contacting you as she needed a trim.”
“Great. I haven’t been able to style hair for several weeks due to my baby bump getting in the way.”
“I can see that as it is kind of tight in here.”
“That it is. However, I normally use the room we have set up for hair styling. There are several of us who share the area. However, I haven’t used it for several weeks. Besides the baby bump and standing for long time was not very comfortable during the last month or so of my pregnancy. Next week, I will again have time slots for styling.”
“When I did the talent survey, I don’t remember you mentioning hair styling.”
Smiling she responded, “Well you were looking for talents that could be done remotely. So I mentioned sketches, art work and similar activities. Not sure I mentioned it but I have done proof reading that at times bordered on editing.”
“Okay. That fits with what I now remember.”
“Now that my pregnancy is over, I can do more. I’ve noticed that you lead Tai Chi. Are you an instructor?”
Susan laughed then said, “Definitely not. Lena and Janet asked me to lead. With me leading, they can focus on assisting those having difficulty.”
“That makes sense. When I’ve done it, I’ve gotten flustered at times.”
“At times, we all have that issue. When I have had that issue I just pause, then resume with the next position. Besides stretching, the activity is also a time to clear your mind so you are ready for the days events. Not sure I chose the right words to express what I am trying to convey.”
“Having done it, I think I sense what you are trying to express. I suspect I will try it again. Now we are done with tidying up your hair style. What do you think?” Alison then held a mirror up to show Susan a side and rear view of her head.”
“Thank you. It looks great. So in a few weeks I will be back.”
As Alison removed the apron from around Susan she inquired, “I would suggest a three or four week intervals. Now, would you like a glass of wine?”
“That sounds great.”
“Red or white?”
“Either is fine.”
After Alison tidied up the bathroom, they joined Betsy in the living room. When Betsy saw Susan, she said, “Now that style looks very good on you. I am not saying it looked bad before, just that...”
“Yes, I understand. I think your roommate did a fantastic job.” Her praise caused Alison to blush a bit.
“There is a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc open on the desk,” noted Betsy.
“Great,” responded Alison as she went to pour two glasses.
15th Saturday – Lone Pine -
When Susan went to check email after her shower, she saw the message light flashing. On playing the message she heard Terri say, “We need to leave for the airport around 9:30.” She then checked her email. Not seeing any that needed immediate attention, she logged out and left for breakfast.
After selecting her items, she sat down. She had just started eating when Alison came over with her breakfast tray. Susan had just taken a bite, so she waved indicating that Alison should join her. Once she had swallowed, she said, “Good morning.”
“Good morning,” responded Alison. “Earlier when we were doing our forms, it seemed like you were watching me.”
“Only part of the time,” acknowledged Susan with a smile. “Based on what I saw, I thought you did very well.”
“Well I goofed up one, but not too badly. Actually, I found you easier to follow than I have others and I am not sure why. In any case, I now plan on participating more than I have in the past.”
“Good. I think you will find the time spent well worth the effort.”
“I was going to tell you that after the session but you disappeared.”
“I follow Tai Chi with swimming then either use the stepper or lift weights to exercise arms, shoulders and chest.”
“So you get all of your exercising done before breakfast.”
“As well as letting my milk down. I’ve started doing that before Tai Chi. When I went this morning, I thought I would see you there.”
“The day you saw us, it was unusually early for us. Today I need to take care of that after I finish breakfast. I like your idea of doing it before Tai Chi and then exercising. I’ve noticed that you are often dressed at breakfast to go outside.”
“Well that is because, I go check on the horses right after breakfast. Later this morning, I am going to the airport to meet Steve and Tracey.”
As they were talking Caitlin and Crystal had joined them with a nod as they sat down. Both were wearing riding clothes.
Caitlin and Crystal said, “Good morning.”
Caitlin then added, “I see Lena put a sign up list for the Bar H barbecue. It notes that the bus will leave at 3. So those riding horses need to leave a little before that?”
“May be a half hour, but not any more than that cause we will go cross country,” responded Susan. “However, we don’t need to arrive at the same time. Do you know who they’ve invited?”
“It was directed toward those who helped with the hay and they had met while visiting us but with no indication it was limited,” responded Crystal. “I believe, those from the AT ranch they met here will be there. Several of us are going to show up early with the intent to assist, for that we will take a pickup. Besides we need to see how it is done, so we can do something similar when the construction work is complete.”
“Thank you for the forethought,” responded Susan, “as having a celebration for stable completion had not occurred to me.”
“Well it is a good excuse for a get together. When we do it, we should include our suppliers, all of our neighbors and any others we interact with.” After a thoughtful pause, she added, “Perhaps, we could turn it into a hoe down, and have live music in the arena.”
“An interesting idea. Making it as large as you are suggesting, raises a number of questions that need to be considered. While I like the idea of live music, doing that will likely draw more attention to us than we desire. We might be able to achieve that by just having an open house for the stable and arena. If some of our friends bring instruments to play, we will have a place in the arena to do that.”
“Ah ... that is pretty much what I had in mind.”
“Sorry Crystal. I apparently misunderstood your proposal. I guess I am a bit touchy about our visibility beyond our nearby neighbors. While unmarried women having babies is not frowned on like it used to be, that doesn’t mean it is considered normal. Our home is a community that we join expecting to be here for three to not more than ten years. During that time, we will experience being pregnant multiple times. Build our job skills or create a functioning business. So how do we handle those who wish to remain in close contact with our small community.”
Alison said, “Wow. This conversation took a direction I never expected. Susan does raise several interesting questions. As to an open house for the stable and arena, I like the idea and think a casual one would be best.”
“Seeing how the Bar H barbecue is done should give us some ideas,” responded Caitlin.
Seeing the time and empty dining room Susan said, “Wow, look at the time. I need to get moving.” As she gathered her stuff, she said, “I’ve enjoyed our time together. I’ll see you all later.”
As the group left the dining room, they gave each other a hug before heading off to take care of their tasks.
Kathy and Susan were waiting in a Lone Pine SUV at Sheridan airport near the FBO. They hadn’t been there very long when the saw a business jet land. Kathy said, “I suspect that is the flight we are waiting for.”
The aircraft was soon being directed to a parking location. Once the aircraft was parked, and the engines shut down, the ramp attendant indicated to Kathy that she could approach. As she approached the aircraft, the cabin door opened and steps were lowered. She stopped near the steps with the vehicle blocking the general view of the aircraft stairs. Kathy and Susan exited and went over to meet one of the pilots.
After the pilot finished talking to the ramp attendant Kathy said, “Good morning, Ryan.”
“Good morning, Kathy. Its been a while.”
“It has. With me this morning is Susan.”
As Susan reached out to shake his hand, she said, “Nice to meet you. I gather you have a couple of passengers for here.”
“Yes. Steve was on the phone. I also have a crate of delicate instruments.”
With a surprised look Kathy said, “Okay. I’ll move over to the cargo door when the fuel truck moves out of the way.”
“Based on your expression, I gather its arrival was a surprise.”
“Well I wasn’t advised of that before I left the ranch. They may have thought they didn’t need to since there were passengers to pickup.”
After the fuel truck moved out of the way, Kathy backed the SUV up near the now open cargo door. While she was backing up, a platform lowered the crate to tailgate height. While this was occurring Steve and Tracey walked around the wing with Susan. With everything in position, Ryan, Kathy, Susan, and Steve slid the crate into the SUV.
Steve told Ryan, “Thanks for the ride. Look forward to riding with you again.”
“Your welcome. I will look forward to the next time.” With that Ryan stepped up on the platform, then rode it up.
When Susan gave Steve a hug, she noticed that the stairs were raised and the cabin door was closed. Seeing where she was looking, Steve said, “I raised the steps before coming over. I suspect the other pilot closed the door.”
Kathy said, “We need to mount up. Susan, I would like for you to ride up front.”
Once they were off the ramp, Kathy stopped so they could watch the plane depart. When they stopped Susan turned in her seat and said to Tracey, “At first when I saw you I didn’t recognize you. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you wearing a scarf like that.”
“Well back then, I don’t think I ever did. Perhaps a parka with a hood at times.”
Kathy said, “Especially here, we try to have those arriving to wear unremarkable dress and a head covering. The goal is to make it difficult for anyone watching to get a good view of them. The crate may be a subterfuge as well. Again, we often get crates like that and we often ship similar crates. The goal is to do nothing out of the ordinary. At other airports it is less of a concern, cause we don’t live close to them.”
“An aspect, I never considered,” responded Susan. “So the only thing out of the ordinary was Steve’s appearance.”
Tracey chuckled, then said, “Women wear pants. While Steve is taller, his height isn’t much different that ours.” She paused as she looked at Susan, then smiled as she said, “You’ve styled your hair.”
“I wondered how long it would take you to notice. I had it done yesterday after realizing how raggedy it looked.”
“Well it looks very nice.”
Steve said, “I thought you looked different. I like it.
Tracey inquired, “So do you think the stylist could do mine?”
“Possibly. We will likely see her at some point, likely in the dining room.”
Kathy inquired, “Who did yours?”
“Alison. She indicated she had just started back as she didn’t do any styling during the last month of her pregnancy.”
Steve said, “So what are we doing today?”
“Well it is nearly lunch time. So we can stop at a restaurant or wait till we get to Lone Pine.”
“Well,” responded Tracey, “it has been a long time since breakfast, so...”
