14th Wednesday – Lone Pine -

When Susan entered the gym, she saw Lena and Janet talking, and started toward them. On reaching them she said, “Good morning.” She gave Lena a hug as Lena and Janet said, “Good morning.” Then she gave Janet a hug. “So I gather baling is complete.”

“Yes,” responded Lena. “We had a cook out yesterday evening. The food was great. Both AJ and Miria told us to let them know when we needed assistance. To me, we were treated as if we were part of an extended family. All the wranglers often showed us how they do things, rather than making us ask. It was a very enjoyable week. Several expressed an interest in visiting. I told them I wasn’t sure as we’ve had very few visitors until recently. I indicated that I thought it would be fine, but that I needed to check and would let them know. I did give several my phone number and I believe several others did as well. Donna indicated that they planned to have a cookout in the near future, and that we would be invited.”

“All of us,” responded Susan and Janet.

“That was my impression. Jackie is looking at her watch so we should start.”

Janet triggered the chime and once everyone was in position she started the music. On hearing the music, Susan began leading the group through the forms.

After completing the session Susan walked past Jackie on the way to swimming. “So are you going to uncover the windows?”

“Probably. Madeline was surprised to learn that the windows were covered. So now I don’t feel quite as bad about overlooking the discrepancy. She is going to ask the Trustees about it and also look through old records to try and determine why. In any case, she gave the go ahead to take the panels down at least temporarily.”

“Brian will be here this morning. So, if you want, I can introduce you. It will likely be around lunch time.”

“Great. Thanks.”

Susan had just finished selecting her breakfast items when she saw Lena enter the dining room. Catching Lena’s attention she nodded toward an empty table. Susan had only been at the table a few moments when Lena joined her. Her arrival was followed by Enola and Lauren approaching them. Anticipating their question, Susan said, “Good morning. You are welcome to join us.”

“Good morning,” responded both. Enola said, “Mind if I join you caring for the horses this morning.”

Smiling Susan said, “Not in the least. The more the merrier.”

Lena said, “How is the temporary pasture working out?”

“Pretty good. Yesterday the rustler’s horse had gotten out but was nearby. I think it was due to a section of the cable coming unfastened. I fixed it then brought the horse back into the temporary pasture. I’ve noticed that the horses come back to the building in the evening. I guess cause it is warmer inside the building and that is what they are use too.

“Oh, Will and Lars delivered the equipment yesterday. After they left, Brian asked about the new horse. I told him that we were taking care of it for the sheriff. Which prompted him to ask if we were going to board horses. My response was that it was an interesting idea that we hadn’t considered.”

Lena said to Enola, “So you like working with the horses.”

“Yes, I think so. Yesterday was the first time that I did something other than ride one. When I was brushing one horse, I found what Susan thought was a horsefly bite. So she showed me how to take care of it and had me look for others. We did find a couple of more that were close to healing as well as some old wounds.”

Seeing Lena’s look Susan added, “That was the rustler’s horse. I looked at the supplies and saw that we do have a spray to apply to the horses that discourages the horseflys.”

“We need to put that on our list along with fly traps.”

With that the conversation shifted away from the horses, to other things as they ate breakfast. As they took their dishes to the wash station, Lena said, “I can check on the horses.”

Before Susan could respond both Lauren and Enola inquired, “Can we come?”

Smiling Susan said, “Sure, we will meet you at the Hall F exit in say 15 minutes.”

“Great,” replied both as they rushed out of the dining room to the elevator.

“Where are they going?” inquired Lena.

“To the locker room to change clothes.”

Lena smiled as she said, “So we have some new assistants.”

“Well, we will see. All the horses were combed yesterday thanks to them and Janet. I am not sure how thorough they were. So we should watch and coach as opportunities present themselves.”

“What needs to be done?”

“Not much. Check to see if the bedding needs freshening. Check the water tank. See that the horses are okay. A ride is planned for tomorrow morning. Right now it includes Enola, Lauren, Janet, and myself. You are welcome to join us and I suspect several others may join us. It is a morning ride of 2 to 3 hours.”

“Count me in. While I’ve been on horse back everyday for a week, that was work, this will be for fun.”

As they were returning from checking on the horses, they saw several trucks coming down the lane. Each truck was pulling a trailer. Following them were two very large motor homes. They could see Brian on horseback waiting for them by the lane. Since they were next to the shop Susan said, “I think, I will wait here to greet our visitors.”

“I’ll wait with you,” added Lena. Then to Enola and Lauren, “We believe those trucks are the stable contractors, so we are going to wait here for them. Thanks for the assistance this morning. This morning was light. Often it takes more effort and time.”

“Well, I enjoyed it,” responded Enola with a smile. Then she added, “If you were trying to discourage me, you need to try harder.” Her comment caused all of them to laugh. “For now, I think, I will plan on joining you in caring for them in the morning and come to breakfast ready to do that. Thanks.” Lauren nodded in agreement.

“Great.”

Lena and Susan watched as Brian led the vehicles toward the shop. When near the shop, Brian had them halt. Susan and Lena walked over to the vehicles as several exited the vehicles. On reaching them, they said, “Good morning, and welcome to Lone Pine.”

“Good morning,” responded Patricia and James as they shook hands. Patricia then said, “This is Earl Russell. He will be the construction superintendent.” Once they exchanged greetings, she introduce the rest of the crew.

Susan said as she nodded toward Brian, “This gentlemen who led you over here is Brian. I believe it is his group you’ve hired to put in the foundation and assist as needed.”

Patricia, James, and Earl nodded.

After glancing at Brian, she continued, “Not sure how you usually arrange your support trailers. You can get electricity and water from the shop.”

Earl said, “We planned to put the office and storage trailers near the stable site. The motor homes can be anywhere nearby. Do you have a preference?”

“Not really. Near the shop would give you easy access to water and electricity. However, I am not sure how to handle the motor home’s waste. If it was me, I think I’d position them so I had a view other than the job site.”

Smiling James said, “Nice suggestion. As to waste, portable outhouses are arriving later today. Those servicing the outhouses will collect the motor home waste.”

“As to interaction while you are here, how about we plan on checking with you all in the morning and after lunch. Our purpose would be to see how things are coming along and answer questions. If you need to contact us, I believe you have our phone numbers. Would that work for you all?”

The two engineers looked at Earl, who said, “I think it is a good way to start.” He looked around then added, “Any comments or questions?” After a moment he said, “Well then let’s be about it.”

“Before you do that, there is one other thing. If you are agreeable, we planned on providing refreshments and snacks at 9:30 and 3. Lunch would be provided at noon which would be cold cuts along with refreshments.”

There was a murmur of positive comments then Earl said, “Thank you, that means a lot.”

As the crew began sitting up the trailers, Susan walked over to Brian and said, “Our fitness instructor would like to meet you. She has an issue that perhaps you can help her resolve. Can we do that just before lunch?”

“Sure,” responded Brian. “Should I meet you at the rear exit?”

“That will work,” noted Lena.

While they were talking Patricia had come over to them. She said, “While they are setting up the trailers and unpacking, James and I are going to put out stakes to show the stable’s interior arrangement. We’ve found that doing that gives most customers a better idea of the stable’s layout. Hopefully it enables them see any short comings that weren’t apparent when viewing the drawings. We should have it ready for a walk through right after lunch. I gather you all will be available.”

“Definitely,” replied both Lena and Susan.

As Patricia walked off, Susan said to Lena, “While it is tempting to stay here and watch, I think I’ll go do some work.”

“I am with you.” With that they walked to the Hall F door.

After Susan launched a data analysis program, she looked over at the clock. Seeing it was approaching lunch time, she decided to find Brian. When she exited the Hall F door, he saw her and started toward her. As she waited, she noticed a multitude of stakes in the stable area.

When Brian reached her, she said, “It looks like the stakes are all up.”

“When I heard of their intention, I was a bit surprised and it must have showed in my expression. James told me that they try to do this on every job if the customer is available. The reason is that doing this seems to give the customer a better idea of what the layout will be like. Sometimes they create a model, but have found this seems to give the customer a better indication of what he has asked them to build.”

“Good idea. It is approaching lunch time, so let’s stop by the gym so you can meet Jackie our trainer.”

On entering the gym, she saw Jackie and waved.

After introductions, Jackie said, “Susan thought you could help me with an issue in the gym. We recently discovered that many of the gym’s windows are covered on the inside with a fitted cover. For several reasons, we would like to remove the covers. To do that, we need assistance or at least guidance.”

“Perhaps we can. Can we look at them? Then perhaps, I can give you a better answer.”

“Sure. I think the easiest place to do that is on the upper level over the swimming pool. All the windows are covered in the same manner.”

Brian examined the window coverings then said, “It looks like they will be fairly easy to remove. After removing them, I suspect the window trim may be damaged. There may also be damage to the window frame due to trapped moisture and aging. So yes, we can do it. At this point, it would just be labor cost. If we see a need for repairs, then we will note them and give you an estimate. Would you prefer for the crew to be women?”

“Well that is up to you. I believe you’ve had lunch with us so you are aware of our casual dress. It is only the swimming pool area where we are naked. However, in thinking it through, I will close off the area where your crew is working.”

“What were you going to do with the covers?”

“If we keep them, we will likely store them in the basement.” Noting his expression, she added, “The only reason we can see for the covers is to reduce the heat loss in the winter. The covers were installed so long ago that we haven’t located the records associated with their installation. Removing the window covers will greatly improve the lighting in here and in the suites overlooking the gym.”

Susan suggested, “Well, why don’t we go to lunch.”

As they sat down to eat, Lena and Jen joined them.

They chatted about various projects. After a bit Jen noted, “Brian, since we’ve started our construction activity, we’ve noticed a rider going past the ranch nearly every afternoon. Their route is parallel to the road but inside the fence line. As they pass us, we’ve seen them scan the area with binoculars. We’ve been able to determine, that they begin their ride up past the Bar-H toward you all. How they get there is not known. When they are a little over a mile past us, they are met by a horse trailer. Knowing that, we presume, they are dropped off somewhere past Bar-H perhaps close to you. While riding by appears innocuous, it does cause us some concern considering the frequency, hiding their binoculars when vehicles pass, and their transportation arrangement.”

“To me your concern is very reasonable, especially considering our recent incident with rustlers. I’ll suggest to our drone operators that they frequently check the road between us for vehicles stopped along the road. If they see anything, we will let you know.”

“We’ve considered putting a tracker on the horse trailer and truck. However, it is occupied, so we haven’t thought of a good way to do so without being detected.”

“Since, I will be coming over here quite a bit for the next few weeks, when you know it is parked there let me know.” Seeing the puzzled expression he added, “A couple of us may just come across them on the way to town. So being good neighbors, we’ll stop to see if they need assistance. Now if we had a tracker...”

With a big smile, Jen responded, “Now, that can be arranged. I’ll bring one out to you in a bit.”

“Okay. Jackie, I’ll bring a couple of people over tomorrow morning, to remove a couple of the window covers. By doing that we will have a better idea of what’s involved. With that information, I can provide you with an accurate quote. Just removing the covers, I don’t think it will be very expensive. If they were installed to minimize heat loss, you could replace them with windows thermally efficient windows. If you would like, I can see what is available.”

“Great. I’ll be looking for you. As to replacing the windows, it would be interesting to see what the options and benefits would be.”

As they were leaving the dining room, Kim said, “Susan, Lena, Patricia is looking for you.”

“Thanks. We’ll head out there.”

When they exited Hall F, they saw Patricia and James and headed toward them. On reaching them, Lena said, “We heard you were looking for us.”

“Yes. We have all the interior aspects of the stable marked with stakes. Now we would like for you to do a walk through and consider whether the arrangement is what you had in mind.”

Lena and Susan walked through the layout. As they did, they tried to visualize them doing their typical tasks. When they went back to Patricia and James, Patricia said, “I thought I saw some frowns. Did you see an issue?”

Smiling Susan replied, “Perhaps I did when I saw how long the main aisle was. It is what we need, so from my perspective the layout is fine.”

“I agree,” added Lena.

Patricia noted, “The additional stalls you added after we set the layout has pushed the number to the point where we often suggest having two main aisles. The disadvantage is that the inner stalls don’t have easy outside access.”

“I’ve used stables with two aisles, and was not all that impressed,” responded Lena. “I have used several that had the office and services in the middle of a long hall. I liked that much better than the two aisles layout. We thought that if we need to add more stalls, then we would likely set it up to connect to this stable opposite the arena access.”

“Hmm ... that would work. Another way would be to set the stable up in a ‘U’ configuration. It would have stalls along both sides of the ‘U’s legs with supplies, office, and wash areas along the base. Now if this is acceptable, we will pull the extra stakes, so construction can begin.”

“We are pleased with the layout,” responded Lena, with Susan nodding.

On hearing that, Patricia waved at a group of workers. While they continued to chat, the workers began removing the extra stakes. Once the stakes were pulled, they began moving dirt.

Seeing the work begin Lena and Susan smiled. After a moment Lena said, “I am not sure we asked earlier, but how many workmen will usually be on site? Knowing that will assist the kitchen.”

“I’ll check and let you know this afternoon,” responded Earl with a smile.

“Fine.”

Susan and Lena watched for a few moments then went back inside.

14th Wednesday – Lone Pine -

It was approaching 4 PM, when Lana in the Security Center called Susan, “Are you expecting someone?”

“No. Why?”

“A pickup pulling a horse trailer entered the lane a few moments ago. Lena told me the same thing.”

“Have you let the 3Js know?” inquired Susan.

“Yes. They thought it was likely for one of you.”

“Well, in that case ask them to join me at the front door. Advise them that I will be carrying.”

“Will do.”

When they saw the pickup nearing the parking area, Susan, Jen, and Jo exited the building. The driver slowed then stopped. He stated, “I’m here to pickup the horse the sheriff left here. Where is it?”

Jen responded, “Good afternoon.” Then after a pause added, “However, before we can let you do that we need see your authorization?”

On hearing his comment Jo called the Sheriff’s office.

As she did the driver snarled, “What? All I was told, was to come here and pickup the horse. Nothing was said about any authorization.”

“Fine,” responded Jen with a smile. “Before we can let you have the horse, we need to know that the Sheriff authorized it being picked up.” The driver’s face became flush. “The horse is not our property.”

“Look b..., just tell me where the horse is so I can load up and leave.”

Rather than respond Jen glanced at Jo enquiring, “What did the Sheriff’s office say?”

“I’m on hold,” replied Jo. After a pause she said, “Okay, I’ll ask him.” Then to the driver, “Sir, they’ve requested that you show us your vehicle registration, drivers license and tell us who sent you so we can give them the information.”

“This is bullshit,” snarled the driver. “I bet your not even speaking to the Sheriff’s office. Now, just tell me where the damn horse is so I can get it then I’ll leave. If I leave without it, then I’ll be back to get the damn horse with assistance.”

Jo replied, “The Sheriff’s office is telling me not to release the horse to you unless you provide the requested information and it is acceptable to them. If you are unwilling then you should contact the Sheriff.”

Just then Jan came into view and said to Jo, “These are the tag numbers.”

Jo then gave the Sheriff’s office the tag numbers.

As she was doing that the man put the truck in gear like he was going to drive off. Seeing that Jan said, “Shut the truck off.”

“Fuck you.”

“You move that truck before I agree and you will have a flat tire. Based on your actions, we now consider you to be trespassing.” Then with a firmer tone added, “Now shut off the engine and slowly step out of the truck.”

Before he could respond Jo said, “A deputy is on the way.”

After a few moments the man shut off the engine then frowning slowly eased out of the truck. As he did, Jen, Jo, and Susan took a step back. He hadn’t been out of the truck very long when they heard a phone begin ringing inside the truck.

Hearing it Jan said, “Go ahead and answer it. It better be the only thing in your hands.” After retrieving the phone she said, “Why don’t you put it on speaker so we can listen?”

The man started to object then shrugged as he enabled the speaker function. As soon as he did they heard, “It’s about time you picked up the damn phone. Where the hell are you?”

“I am at Lone Pine Ranch to pickup up that horse as you instructed,” he replied.

“What?” was the angry response. “As long as you’ve been gone, you should be on your way back by now.”

“It will be a while as they won’t let me have the horse without a release from the Sheriff.”

“That’s bullshit. Get our horse and get back here!”

“I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Well stop screwing around and get it done,” replied the voice then a loud bang as the phone was apparently slammed down.

The man looked at the phone like he wanted to break it. His shoulders sagged as he mumbled, “Well I suspect, I will be looking for another job.”

“Where do you work?” inquired Susan.

“Wilson’s Livestock Auctions. That was Mr. Wilson.”

“I gather from his comments that the rustler’s horse belonged to them.”

“Well I am not sure who it belongs to. The horses we use during the auction are only there when there is livestock on site.”

“So how do you know which horse to pickup?”

“Well I have a description and an image of the brand.”
