14th Monday – AT Ranch -
When the truck carrying the barn components from Lone Pine reached the AT Ranch, it stopped briefly near the office. When it did, Loki got out and hurried into the office. When he found Liam and Cathal, he said, “On our way here, we passed several pickups pulling large livestock trailers. They appeared to be empty and there weren’t any markings on the pickups.”
“Thank you,” responded Cathal. He then looked at Liam and said, “Let’s put up our reserve drone and have a look.”
“Do it. I’ll see who is around who can help deal with this. Phone the sheriff as soon as you determine where they’ve entered our pasture.”
When Cathal located the pickups and trailers, they were parked in a pasture near the county road. They had parked so the back of the trailers faced the pasture. The tail gates were down. Several men could be seen setting up portable fences that would guide the cattle into the trailers. As soon as he saw what they were doing, he contacted the Sheriff’s office. As he was speaking to the dispatcher, he located a group of rustlers on horse back driving cattle toward the trailers.
After disconnecting from the sheriff, he contacted Liam. “I’ve located the rustlers. They have accessed the pasture this side of the large pine grove. It is likely they are not readily visible from the road. This is due to a pickup with a horse trailer parked on the side of the road blocking the view of where they entered the field. Also, there are four riders pushing a large group of cattle toward them.”
“Okay. I’ll send several riders out to come in behind them, and six of us will go by road. Those here in the village are aware of the activity.”
A short time later, Liam slowed their pickup as he approached the location where Cathal indicated a pickup was parked alongside the road. When they were close, he pulled over and parked on the shoulder of the road. They all quietly exited their pickup carrying rifles and sidearms. Liam and one other also carried a modern version of the crossbow. Liam and the other wrangler slowly moved toward where they believed the vehicle was parked along the road. The other wrangler with a crossbow quietly slipped through the brush seeking a clear view of the pickups and livestock trailers.
They soon reached a position where they had a clear view of all the rustlers pickups. It was moments after this that they faintly heard sirens just as Cathal said, “The cattle are approaching the trailers. Go.”
Hearing that those with the crossbows released a bolt toward a front tire on two of the rustler’s pickups. When the bolts hit, the tires ruptured with two loud bangs. The sounds startled the rustlers causing them to look around. While the loud sounds didn’t stampede the cattle, it did slow their movement toward the trailers, causing them to bunch up. Meanwhile the rustlers drew their weapons as they continued to look for what caused the sounds. None of them moved to investigate. Meanwhile the wrangler with a crossbow moved so he had a clear shot at the front tire on the third pickup.
From the edge of the road, Liam could see a sheriff’s car approaching with its lights flashing. It stopped so it was blocking the pickup the rustlers had parked at the side of the road. The deputies cautiously exited their vehicles with guns drawn. Liam whistled then stepped out onto the road where the deputies could see him. His movement had momentarily drawn the deputies attention. On seeing who it was, they shifted their attention back to the pickup and trailer.
Liam quietly approached then when close to them said softly, “There are six of us here near the road. We have four riders coming from the ranch, but it will take them a while to get close. We saw six people with weapons near their trailers. There are likely others that we can’t see on the other side of the trailers.” He paused for a moment, “They are still trying to load the cattle. Two of the pickups have flat tires. Our crossbow shooter is currently moving so he can rupture a tire on the third pickup.”
It was only a moment or two later, when there was another loud bang. The cattle turned away from the trailers and surged back toward the four rustlers on horse back. The turmoil led to the horses rearing up, resulting in three riders falling off landing among the cattle. Muffled screams were heard as three horses went riderless with the cattle. One rider managed to ease out of the herd. Now, the rustlers around the trailers were swearing up a storm. A loud voice said, “Quick, get the equipment in the trailers.”
The deputies hollered, “Drop your weapons and put your hands up, you are under arrest.”
The rustlers turned to look toward the road. On seeing only two deputies with weapons in their hands, several rustlers raised their weapons to fire. It was then that the others with Liam made their presence known. Only those who dropped their weapon avoided being shot.
Once the rustlers were cuffed, the lead deputy, Thomas, called the sheriff’s office. “This is Deputy Thomas near the AT Ranch on AB. We’ve captured some rustlers. We need four tow trucks, an ambulance, the coroner, and a prisoner transport van at the cattle rustling site.” He listened for a minute, then said, “By the way, the Highway Patrol Task Force will probably be interested in this incident.”
After disconnecting he said to Liam, “I suspect this is going to take a while.”
“Fine. We’ve suspected, we were loosing cattle to rustlers for some time. This I think verifies our suspicion.”
“What is that you are carrying?” he inquired with a puzzled expression.
Smiling Liam replied, “A modern version of the crossbow. We used it to disable the vehicles by shooting the tires. It’s quieter than a rifle so you don’t give away your location. The successive tire explosions were what caused the cattle to stampede.”
“Well a shootout would have done that.”
“With the explosions being so close to them, I am surprised that the rustlers didn’t put more effort into determining the cause of the explosions. At the same time, I am glad they didn’t. What do you want to do about the rustler who rode off? We can guide you to him while he is on our land. You might be able to catch him at our boundary with the Lone Pine Ranch.”
“The Sheriff will be here shortly, so lets see what he says.”
As they waited for the requested vehicles to arrive, they moved the wounded to the shoulder of the road after marking where they fell. The Sheriff and Highway Patrol arrived closely followed by the ambulance.
Deputy Thomas described to Sheriff Wells what happened after they arrived at the scene. During this one of the wounded rustlers kept loudly cussing them and demanding an attorney. Ignoring the commotion, Sheriff Wells turned to Liam, then paused. After a moment, he said, “Thomas, the rustlers have all been arrested and read their rights, correct?”
“Yes, sir. We did that when we cuffed them. Our activity was recorded.”
“Those assisting you from the AT Ranch were all deputized.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good. Now Liam, how did this start?”
Liam smiled as he began telling what happened beginning with the warning from Loki on reaching the ranch. They didn’t ask and he didn’t tell them that he was recording as well. By the time, he finished the other services the deputy had requested had arrived.
Deputy Thomas said, “Sheriff, one rustler is fleeing on horseback. Some how Liam’s people are tracking him.”
The Sheriff looked at Liam, who said, “He is headed toward the northwest side of Lone Pine Ranch.” After a pause he added, “You may be able to catch him at our boundary with them as there are only a few places to easily cross it.” Seeing the Sheriff’s puzzled expression, he added, “I am wearing a radio. One of our wranglers is trailing the rider.”
“Deputy contact the Office and have them send Jim or Al to Lone Pine to request their assistance with this.” Hearing this Cathal told Liam, “I’ll give Jan a head’s up.”
When Al pulled up to the Lone Pine building, Jan and Susan were waiting with three horses. After exchanging greetings Jan said with a smile, “We presumed that you can ride.”
“Yes, but not often enough. I guess you heard why I am here.”
“Sort of. We were told that you all thought a rustler was fleeing a scene on the AT Ranch and was headed our way.”
“Essentially,” he replied as he clipped on his portable radio then picked up a rifle.
Once he was mounted Susan said, “Let’s go this way,” as she turned to ride to the north. When she saw him hesitate, she said, “There is a trail we can take over the ridge. Going this way will shorten the distance to where the rustler is expected to reach the ranch boundary.”
“Not sure this is what the Sheriff had in mind, but lead on. As of now, you two are temporary deputies reporting to me.”
Al heard the Sheriff say over his radio, “Smart move. Do what needs to be done.”
Softly into the mike, “Yes, sir. I’ve got good support here.”
As they rode toward the anticipated crossing point, Susan was pleased that this was one of the areas where they had recently ridden. She chose a path that she thought would minimize the chance of the rustler noticing them approaching. They were soon waiting in a patch of brush near where the rustler was expected to reach the boundary fence. Al took the center position with Susan and Jan some distance to each side.
They watched the rustler approach the fence then look for a place to cross. Once he found it and crossed the boundary, he refastened the gate. As he was starting to remount, Al said, “Put your hands up, you are under arrest for rustling.”
On seeing the deputy, the rustler caused his horse to move, blocking the deputies view. He then drew his revolver. Seeing his intent, Susan shot him in the shoulder of his gun hand. The rustler released his grip on the reins as he fell. The gun shot startled the rustler’s horse, causing it to pull away from the sound. When it did, it stepped on the rustler, crushing him.
Susan slid off Dante, and rushed over to a nearby bush then threw up. Jan came up and put an arm around her, as she said, “First time?”
Susan nodded then said, “There wasn’t any other choice. When he came into view, he had already drawn and was waiting for the horse to move out of the way.”
“Well he made his choice,” said Al as he handed Susan a bottle of water. Al called the Sheriff and said, “The rustler chose to resist. In doing so he fell under his horse’s hooves, so he is dead. How do you want to handle the scene?” There was a pause, then, “Really. Okay. It will take us about an hour to make it back to the house at Lone Pine.”
“So what next?” inquired Jan.
“Well the Sheriff said to throw him over his horse and take him back to the house. Someone will meet us there. We can do statements now, on the way back or then as I am wearing a recorder.”
Smiling Jan just pointed up toward the AT Ranch. It took Al a moment before he saw the drone. Jan looked at Al then placed a hand over his mike and said, “We would prefer for that aspect not to be mentioned unless it is needed.”
Al nodded his agreement, then said, “Let me see if I can catch his horse.”
After Al brought the rustler’s horse back, they laid the rustler over the saddle then secured him. They were soon mounted and headed back. Susan said, “We should probably go around the end of the ridge as I would prefer not to handle the body again.”
“Sounds like an excellent plan,” responded Al. “So how are you all doing? I’ve noticed your vehicles out on the road more frequently.”
“We’re making an effort to become better acquainted with our neighbors. When we were preparing to shift the barn stuff to the new building, wranglers from the Bar H and AT ranches showed up to assist. It was a welcome surprise as we underestimated the effort it would take. Since then we’ve been assisting Bar H with baling hay. We heard Mr. Kelly over at SK was injured, so we offered to help them with their silage harvest. Some of us have met the Martin’s at the DoubleM. As to activity at Lone Pine, we’ve added a steel building to store hay. The barn is being replaced with a stable. We are also adding an arena near the stable.”
“Wow. If I am not being to nosy, what brought this on?”
“Between us, two things. By knowing your neighbors, you improve your security if you look out for each other. Upgrading where the horses stay is due to two residents deciding to expand our horse activity. It has always been available as a recreational activity for the residents which will continue. Susan and Lena are going into the horse breeding and training business.”
“So I can talk about what Susan and Lena are doing?”
“Certainly.”
As they rode along Al shared with them what he had heard regarding the rustlers. He noted that they had received more reports of ghost truck sightings, but no leads. When they were in sight of the building, Al advised the dispatcher. Shortly after they reached the house, the coroner, and the Sheriff arrived.
After Al introduced Sheriff Wells to Susan and Jan, the Sheriff said, “Thank you for assisting Al. I know you all like to keep a low profile but I would like to note your assistance in the records.”
Jan looked at Susan then said, “Well a note is fine, I think we would like it to be very low key.”
“So no bill boards,” responding a smiling Sheriff.
“Preferably not even a mention in the news. However, we are willing to assist you in the future.”
“Fine. I understand. On another topic, would you be willing to take care of the rustler’s horse until we can sort things out.”
“Sure.”
14th Tuesday – Lone Pine -
Susan smiled as she entered the gym for Tai Chi. Several people were using the exercise equipment that had been placed in front of the windows. Walking over to Jackie she said, “Good morning.”
“Good morning.”
“It looks like the equipment is being used even though there isn’t any activity outside.”
“Yes. Even so, it is a nice view. Much better than a video screen or blank wall. It’s to bad there isn’t more room in front of the windows. Since placing the exercise units there, they are almost always in use. Even so having them there sort of interferes with other activities.”
“Well, the video screens are better than a blank wall, but being able to see outside is an even better alternative.” Seeing Janet waving, Susan added, “It looks like Janet is ready for us to begin.”
When Susan started toward her position, Janet sounded the chime. After a couple of moments, she started the music with that their morning Tai Chi session began.
As Jackie watched the Tai Chi participants, she thought about Susan’s comments. When she considered the view of the building from outside, she remembered seeing windows on both exterior walls of the gym. Remembering that she entered the pool area and walked over to the ledge between the pool and the wall. After examining the wall, she decided that the raised panels she thought were decorative were likely there to cover the windows. After considering it a bit, she decided that the panels may have been added to reduce heat loss. If the panels could be removed there would be several benefits. For one the gym would be brighter. Also, if the residents could see outside as indicated by the 1st floor, they would likely exercise more frequently. Another benefit is that it would provide natural lighting to the suites overlooking the gym. She decided that after breakfast, she would ask Madeline if the panels covering the windows could be removed.
After Tai Chi, as Susan passed Jackie on her way to the pool, Jackie said, “Thank you.”
With a puzzled expression Susan paused and responded, “Excuse me.”
Laughing Jackie said, “Our brief conversation about windows and the view, prompted me to do some thinking. I soon realized that when viewed from outside, the gym walls have windows just like the rest of the building. So I did a closer examination and discovered there were panels covering the windows. The only reason I can see for doing this was to reduce heat loss. So with a little bit of effort, we may soon be able to view our surroundings from both levels as well as from the suites bordering the gym.”
“Great. You might ask Brian from the AT Ranch about how to remove the panels. He will be around the stable area on Wednesday. If it was due reducing heat loss and considering the age of the building, there are likely better ways to accomplish that now.”
“Good point. I need to do some checking first to make sure my conclusions are correct. If they are, then perhaps you could introduce me to him.”
“Sure.” Susan then headed toward the pool.
After Susan selected her breakfast items, she looked for a place to sit. As she did, she saw Enola wave and went over to join them. On reaching the table she said, “Good morning.”
“Good morning,” responded Enola, Lauren, and Janet. Enola added, “You are welcome to join us.”
“Thank you,” Susan responded as she sat down. “So how are things with you all?”
“I am getting things sorted out,” responded Enola. “Do you know when a group is going riding again?”
“Not really. Although, I would be interested doing so tomorrow or Thursday. Actually Thursday would be better for me.”
“Great,” responded all three.
“So let’s plan on Thursday after breakfast, unless something comes up. Do you want to do a short ride or a long one?”
“What do you mean by a short ride?” enquired Janet.
“A short ride would be 2 to 3 hours, with us leaving about 9 and returning before lunch. An alternative would be to go after lunch with a return around 4. For a long ride, we would be leave around 9 and return around 4. Obviously we would need to pack a lunch.”
“Well my preference would be the short one,” replied Janet. “Although I am willing to go on a long one.”
“This time let’s do the short one,” added Enola. “I just remembered some things I need to do in the afternoon.”
“Fine, then let’s plan on Thursday morning,” replied Susan. “It wouldn’t surprise me if several more decide to join us.” Enola, Lauren and Janet just shrugged.
Enola said, “You are dressed like you are going out to care for the horses. Are you?”
“Yes. You are welcome to come along.”
“Okay. As soon as I finish eating, I’ll go downstairs and change.”
“You all are welcome to come with me, however I am only going to check on the horses.”
“Cool,” responded Lauren as she gathered her dishes. “I’ll meet you at the Hall F exit.”
“Me too,” added Janet.
Susan smiled as she watch them quickly finish their breakfast then rush off to change.
After slowly finishing her coffee, Susan gathered up her dishes to take to the wash station. On exiting the dining room she was met by Enola, Janet, and Lauren. Together, they left via the exit door for Hall F. As they walked toward the temporary stable, Susan looked around the area. On reaching the shop, they turned on the water spigot. They were nearly to the temporary pasture, when Susan realized the rustler’s horse was not in the temporary pasture. While not a big deal, it could make it difficult for that horse to get to the water tank. The rest of the horses were near each other over toward the north side of the pasture.
When they reached the gate by the storage building, Susan whistled to get Dante’s attention. In response, he quickly came to her with many of the other horses slowly following him. After scratching his chin for a few moments, she said, “I am going to saddle Dante then check the temporary fence. Since there is a horse beyond the boundary there maybe a section down. While it is not really an issue, the horse would have difficulty reaching the water. While I am doing that, I suspect the other horses would like to be brushed.”
“Where are the brushes?” inquired Enola with a smile.
“Just on the other side of the divider. I can show you as I get Dante’s tack.” She then said softly, “Come Dante,” as she walked toward the building with Dante following.
When Susan went into the tack area, she pointed out the brushes and combs to the women. She then gathered Dante’s tack. As she saddled Dante, she sort of monitored the others as they selected brushes. With brushed in hand, each of them approached a horse with brushes in hand. Seeing that Enola, Lauren, and Janet had selected a horse and were taking care of them, she said, “I’ll be back shortly.”
With that she led Dante out of the building. After mounting him, she began to slowly ride along the temporary pasture boundary. Part way around she found a section where the cable was down. Examining it, she decided that it had simply come unhooked from several fence posts. After moving to the other side of the fence, she dismounted then began reattaching the cable to the posts. As she did so, she tried to determine what caused it to come unhooked. When it was back in place, she decided to attribute the cause to the cable not being firmly secured to the posts.
She mounted Dante then rode along the boundary fence checking it until she reached the corner of the building. She didn’t see any other places where the boundary cable was poorly attached. She then turned Dante toward the rustler’s horse, which had been monitoring her movements. When they were close to her, Susan slid off of Dante. She slowly walked over to the horse, with Dante following her. As she got closer, the horse backed away, then she stopped and stared at Susan then Dante. After pausing a moment, Susan stepped closer and slowly raised her hand toward the mare. She sniffed Susan’s hand, then let Susan pet her. When Susan was sure the horse was comfortable with her, Susan clipped a lead to her halter. After petting her some more, she led the horse over to Dante then mounted him. Holding the lead, she looked around as she considered how to get back inside the temporary pasture. After moment she gave the lead a tug as she urged Dante to move. It didn’t take them long to reach the gate to the temporary pasture. Susan dismounted then opened the gate. After leading them into the temporary pasture, she closed the gate.
Enola walked out of the building carrying a couple of brushes and said, “Is this one a candidate?”
